I love this water distiller!!!!
I have wanted a water distiller for a long time, as it is the best drinking water available. Found this one on Amazon for a great price. I was interested in this one because of the water production in a gallon, not smaller quantities. Quick shipping, quality packaging. Just remove from box, insert filter, and you're ready to operate. Makes 1 gallon of clean, odorless, drinkable water in 4 hours. I love it and wouldn't trade it for anything! I have previously written a review for this item. However, after reading the one comment that wasn't so eloquently stated about the carafe being plastic and contaminating the water is rediculous. Had the rating customer read the information the carafe is made of #5 plastic which does not leach (break down and create toxins) when heated. I use this distiller nearly ever day. I love it, it's a great product for the size of production. The water is clean and the results are very clear when you reopen your stainless steel container and see the reminantes of what didn't go into your drinking water after distilling! I only give my dogs and cats distilled water now as well. I'm sure after seeing what's left in the distiller there is no doubt that would contribute to a shorter life span for man and beast alike! updated 7/22/08

Great alternative for purifying water that you already paid for.
I love this machine. I originally fond one for just $25 ina thrift store, but it was lost in a move, so I bought another. Sadly, the shipper of this product was not quite thoughtful in regards to the shipping and it was a little damaged, but it was mostly cosmetic. I use this to pretty much make purified water for tea, coffee, and for use in water features. It can process 1 gallon of water in about 4 hours if kept clean. The drawback to the process is that the machine generates quite a bit of heat, the output measured at 110F. Now if it's a cold winter's day, this can be a benefit because you're using electricity to purify water AND make heat, but in the summer, it's a bit nasty. If you can put it outside to process you shoudl be fine, or if you have a very well cooled home, it shouldn't be too much of a problem either. Now the device does require a filter because purified water is actually acidic. But if you can't or won;t get filters made for it, you can make them fairly easily with some activated carbon that you can get in pet stores for aquariums, and some cheesecloth. Depending on the amount of use, a filter can last for a month to a season or longer. Clean the kettle periodically by either running vinegar water though it (remove the filter on the collection pitcher) or water that has powdered citric acid dissolved in it. This will eliminate scale and crust and still allow for potable water (thought you may want to run a cycle after to flush the system of any traces). The pitcher should be washed with some warm water and very MILD detergent.

Its good at distilling water
Good Water Distiller. I have been using it for almost 2 months now. The distiller is easy to setup and to clean; I typically use 1 cup of Distilled vinegar to clean the boiler chamber out after a couple weeks. The easiest way to do this is to add 1 cup of Vinegar and the fill the chamber up to the max line with hot water. Then place it on the distiller and let it boil for 10 minutes and then turn the distiller off and let it stand for an additional 30 minutes. This makes it very easy to remove the scaling from the bottom and sides of the container without the need to scrub vigorously. Water-Wise does sell a chemical to do this, but I find that its rather expensive and Vinegar is cheaper, readily available and not harmful or toxic. The fan on this unit makes an audible sound, that is loud enough to be heard even with background noise so placing it in an area in your home where you won't be spending the majority of time may be best. I chose to place it downstairs where I usually don't spend much time, so when its running I cannot hear the fan while working, watching a movie or reading a book. This unit is mostly plastic. The catch container or Carafe is all plastic. The boiling chamber and coil are Stainless steel, but the boiling chamber is encased in plastic as well. My only gripe with this unit is that there is a small half glass/half plastic flange on the cover of the boiler chamber. I would have preferred that this was all Glass or stainless steel and not the cheap plastic that its made from that will most likely wear out after a year of use. Be careful when cleaning the cover as well, if you are too rough with the flange you could easily damage it. For reference I typically boil 2-3 gallons of water a day, which is half of the maximum amount this unit can do. For the price (399.99) I hope it lasts a few years. Overall I give the unit 4 out of 5 stars. I will do a follow up after I have owned it longer. Cheers

DOA
My Dad and my Uncle have the Waterwise 9000. They have had minor expected problems and they do really like the 9000. I decided to get one also as I am a big fan of distilled water. I choose the 8800 as I did not like the small mouth of the collection jar in the 9000. I received the unit and followed the instruction to clean and fill it. I did not spill any water or overfill it. All looked good to go for the first cycle (cleaning). I then plugged it in and set the clock. Everything looked good so I pressed the start button. At this point the fan came on, the unit clicked and the clock stopped displaying half of it's segments. I watched it for a moment or two and decided to unplug and check the unit. After a visual checkout I plugged it back in. It is dead. Nothing showed on the display and it did not make any sounds. Pushing the buttons did not work. I tried different power outlets and I tried the a toaster and a microwave in these outlet. The toaster and microwave worked, the 8800 did not. I am returning it as DOA. Amazon as always accepted the return without question. I really wanted a distiller today. Now I don't know if I should try to order this one again or a different one. The Waterwise Company was great on the phone and were helpful. They have stood behind it's products for my Dad and Uncle. Let's hope I was just unlucky and received one of the few defective units. Thanks for reading this long note. I really wanted it to work!

This one is definitely the best from my limited trials
First I tried a much cheaper unit but you get what you pay for. It was definitely "made in China" and the water tasted awful. TDS were down to 19 ppm (starting from 170). I then purchased the Waterwise 9000. It was a defective unit (open box, ebay) and I had to send it back. There were a few drawbacks to that model: The boiler has a smaller diameter opening than the boiler itself which makes it MUCH harder to clean. There is a gap between the collecting unit and the spout which allows for a lot of vapor to escape. Advantage: Takes up little counter space, compact and the fact that there is a gap between the spout and the collecting vessel would allow somebody to just place a glass container to collect the water if plastic is not desired. So I decided to try the 8800 instead.I am very glad I did. It is very well built and does a fine job. I have measured several batches now and get 0 TDS! (The distilled water I used to purchase was never under 7). The boiler unit is VERY easy to clean and surprisingly nor half as messy as the other China made Unit I bought first. Somehow in the Waterwise 8800 most of the TDS collects in the little well at the bottom. It also stops just short of being completely dry, avoiding things to get all caked on. It is, however, fairly noisy and the collector is made out of plastic and cannot be easily replaced with something glass without extensive rigging. Overall a very well built appliance that does exactly what it is made for! I am happy at last.

... Water Distiller made the first batch of distiller water fine. Everything worked perfectly
The Waterwise 8800 Water Distiller made the first batch of distiller water fine. Everything worked perfectly. I dumped this batch of water following the instructions and prepared to make a next batch. I looked at the distilling kettle to make sure it was in good shape. I cleaned it a little as it had only a small amount of scale on the bottom. I filled the kettle up to make the next batch and set up the machine. I turned on the distiller and it worked fine for about 20 minutes, but then turned itself off. I checked to see if power was going into the unit. Everything was powered. So I turned the unit on again, but this time it turned it self off in about 5 minutes. This keeps happening, so I am send the unit back. Not a great quality product.

EXCELLENT UNIT & MAKES GREAT WATER
I purchased my original Waterwise 8800 unit in 2005. We have 5 people in our family and I run the unit 2-3 times a day EVERY day. We even travel with it! In that 7 year time frame, I had to replace the rubber gasket one time. I called Waterwise and they were very helpful and sent the $18 replacement gasket out to me quickly. Just today, the motor went out. So, I have ordered a new machine. I believe the unit has been a great investment and paid for itself in less than the first year. Our family spent way more than $400 a year on distilled water before I bought this unit. I have been very happy with it! That is why I have no problem purchasing my second unit.

Amazing Machine!
I have been wanting this machine for a few years now but could not afford the $800 price on some sites. Distilled water has been shown to be good, for your bones, especially those,of us who are older and have osteoporosis . Distilled, water helps to keep the blood alkaline which is good for reducing bone loss. I looked at many distillers but this was consistently recommended by healthcare professionals. It is easy to fill and clean, makes minimal noise, and requires very little maintenance. I no longer have to lug heavy jugs of distilled water home every week . I love this distiller!

Four Stars
Good machine, though high priced. Works perfectly for a small family and looks good sitting on the kitchen counter.
