Plug it in and use. Even if he screen is going to be covered by a package, push the button under the screen, the readout will still be visable when the package is removed. The placement of the readout is really handy and even has a carry handle. Not too large of a footprint and easy to prop up against the wall if I need it out of the way as it is lightweight.

I use this to weigh vegetables freshly harvested from the field, so it needs to endure mud, dust, vibration, general rough treatment, and it stands up really well. The battery cover on the bottom sometime comes off when I shove the scale across a rough surface, but it pops right back in and I could always duct tape it if it became an issue.
