I have read many translations of this book over the years, and this is one of the best. He was not the easiest writers to translate, not because he was a poor writer, but because he was probably one of the best German prose writers. I recommend this translation of a classic philosophy book.

In one sense, it’s almost a sin to write a review of the Joyous Science. Everything idea in it is, at its root, a taste, an emotion or some other disposition of the body. So it seems Nietzsche would have disapproved of discussing these ideas in abstraction.Nevertheless, most of the key Nietzchean themes are here: the supremacy of the will to power (formulated as the diametric opposite to his earlier intoxication with Schopenhauer), the amorality of nature, the superiority of life over reason...all written in a saner matter than his last works.But it’s also simply a celebration of life; hence the title. Written primarily in Southern Europe, Nietzsche tries to kindle in the reader that lightness of manner so characteristic of the medieval troubadours. Perhaps that is the image he most wants to leave in the reader: Nietzsche as bard leading his select followers into a new found dawn.In short, to be true to Nietzsche one can simply recommend the Joyous Science. It can’t be properly summarized or discussed outside of a close reading of the text itself. To those who see in Nietzsche many of the roots of contemporary mores, or who simply want to experience a more joyful Nietzsche than his later works, highly recommended.

I recommend buying this item, but Penguin books are somewhat fragile. I always receive them with a little damage on the cover, independently of the retailer.

I’ve purchased quite a few books from Amazon over the last few years. This will likely be my last. The book was clearly used—in good shape, yes, but slightly worn and with notes inside. I think it’s time that I start supporting my local bookstores. They may not have the same number of titles, but at least they’re honest brokers. Sorry Amazon, but you’ve lost someone who WAS a loyal customer.
