DBZ noob takes on Kakarot - It's decent and I can't stop playing
Edit : changed to 5/5 stars after putting in over 100 hours. Yes, compared to many modern hits like God of War or RDR2 (some of my favorite games ever), it lacks a sort of nuanced fancy. However, it has an old school PS2 charm almost no games cover these days, let alone it being DBZ. Iโve never fully experienced the story so this was a huge bonus for me, as it was amazing. Lastly, even beyond a platinum trophy / โ100%โ, thereโs an absurd amount of stuff you can do post-game. I see myself replaying it maybe once or twice if they add a new game+, otherwise I likely wonโt, however DLC and post-game is well worth the $50 I paid. Original review : My synopsis of this game : it has mediocre core game play and RPG elements outside of fighting, but the story is amazing and so is the immersion in the world, and even with all its average-ness, I can't put it down. The game is very enjoyable even as someone who grew up with DBZ but doesn't remember the story and never found time to watch it. Collecting orbs, fishing, mining, they're all so... mediocre, sub-par, it probably would've been better if they were left out. If God of War or RDR2 had mechanics like that everyone would have mocked them to no end, but this is Bandai so they usually get a pass. The side quests are alright but are basically useless because the main story levels you up to where you need to be every time, it auto-allocates XP to give you the facade of gaining power when in reality the XP basically doesn't do anything besides change the numbers you see during attacks in a fight. This is NOT an RPG, it is a semi-open world fighting game. The side quests will give you almost no XP and then a single main story chapter will give you hundreds of thousands of XP. It can also be extremely easy if you use healing items but I tend to limit myself to none, or one during a main boss battle. Honestly, yes, the game is a step in the right direction but Bandai sucks. If Square Enix had made this it would've gone down in history as the supreme Dragon Ball game. Regardless, for $50 and the ability to sell it if I want to since it's a physical copy, I really have no complaints beyond the gripes I posted.

This game is amazing. Get it
I watched dbz as a kid on cartoon network maybe like 18 years ago. This game brought back some good memories. I am not a fan of fighting games but I still like the combat in this because it is pretty simple and satisfying. The story is the best part of this game. I am about 20 hours in so far. This brought back some happiness after getting treated with game breaking cyberpunk 2077 bugs which still haven't been fixed. There is a lot of side stuff like completing training battles, upgrading various things, building food meals, the card game( I haven't played it), and some side quests. I think you will enjoy this if you like rpgs and you are not overly obsessed with the anime because as you can see in the comments, some people just wanted way more story events in comparison to the anime. I cannot disagree with this as more story would have been cool but you still get like 40 50 hours of play.

Love This Game!
Iโm having a blast playing this game! Itโs way longer than I expected it to be. Iโve played just about all the other DBZ games, and this one feels a lot more free. Itโs the same as the original DBZ story with some minor adaptations. Iโm on the cell saga right now and still having fun. It can get a little repetitive, but I feel that is true with most fighting games. Iโd compare the fighting gameplay to be similar to Xenoverse, but itโs not identical. For example the ki blast button on PlayStation is square and blocking is L2. These controls are non-adjustable. It would be cool if you could map it or change it to the Xenoverse controls so itโs not awkward playing one game right after the other, but it doesnโt seem like this option is available. Thatโs my only โcomplaintโ but Iโve gotten used to the controls, so itโs no big deal. This is one of my favorite Dragon Ball games by far!

Not without issues, but much better than what paid critics claim
I find this game is being severely underrepresented by critics who play the game for only 30 minutes because they didn't get a payout like certain big names in the open world genre. With that out of the way, allow me to give an honest review after completing the entire game. Visuals: As close to the source material as you're going to get (only FighterZ is better). Framerate is excellent and character models look fantastic. Environments are beautiful for the most part, but I encountered a few poor environmental textures in spots (this can easily be rectified on the PC version), and there are some rather static character animations during dialogue outside of cutscenes. Otherwise, solid. Gameplay: The combat can be considered a much improved revision of Xenoverse's third person combat system. The camera is fixed behind the player, and you have a an assortment of melee and ki based attacks to choose from, which can be comboed into supers, etc, many of which will damage the surrounding environment. Contrary to critic reviews, there is more than one melee combo and you earn more attacks as you progress through the game, and can customize how you earn experience and which stats get boosted. AI is solid (I've died more than once) but I'd like to see the developers add a harder difficulty level in a future patch for sake of longevity. The open world's biggest strength is in its main quest, which tries to follow the manga as much as possible while thankfully speeding up a few filler segments which this series has become notorious for. The base game doesn't cover Super, but recent text dumps suggest DLC may be added rectifying this. Activities outside of beating people up include fishing, shops and exploration (including some very clever easter eggs and guest appearances I won't spoil). Some sidequests are legitimately good and even fill in notable plotholes, while others are unremarkable fetch quests. That is to be expected however: all open world games do this, even AAA ones. Sound: An arranged version of the original broadcast soundtrack is present here instead of metal covers typical of many DBZ games. Unfortunately, we have arrived at the weakest portion of the game: the US dubing. If you hate the US dub as I do, the phoned in, dry Funimation voice work isn't going to do anything to convince you. Thankfully there is an option to switch to the superior Japanese, who are still taking this seriously after 30 years and deserve heaps of praise for it. Not perfect, but good. Its the DBZ game I wanted as a child, big props to the devs for this even if its not immaculate.

A Fun Action/RPG Hybrid for DBZ Fans
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is the latest in a long-running line of home console games based on the Dragon Ball franchise. Like many (many) games before it, Kakarot runs through the core storyline of the Z-era of the Dragon Ball series, meaning it consists of the four main arcs of that story (Saiyan, Namek, Cell, and Buu). It has a pretty fun battle system, but gets bogged down in its side quests. STORY As noted above, this is the DBZ story. Raditz arrives on Earth, tells Goku that heโs a Saiyan, and things proceed from there until you kill Kid Buu. Fans familiar with the story will know all the beats. I will say that it is a bit more fleshed out, but the way thatโs accomplished is with what is ultimately new filler content. Itโs different from the series. For instance, Goku doesnโt encounter Princess Snake on Snake Way, but Piccolo will spar with Krillin, Yamcha, Tien, and Chiaotzu prior to Vegeta and Nappaโs arrival, which doesnโt happen in the manga or the anime. Itโs harmless padding, but it feels a bit unneeded. GAMEPLAY DBZ: Kakarot plays in a manner similar to the Xenoverse games, with the key distinction being that you play as in-universe leads like Goku, Gohan, Piccolo, and Vegeta. You get into battles by nearing enemies on the world map, or through story sequences. Otherwise, you can explore, hunt animals, fish, and complete side quests for people (most of which are of the โgather 5 of X itemโ variety). The worlds are broken up into big zones, so it isnโt technically โopen world,โ but it feels big, which fits the scope of what the dev team was going for here. The battles are real time and are kind of complex, even when you get the hang of it. The four face buttons let you charge up ki, do a basic energy attack, do a physical attack, and dodge/fly. You can block with L2, toggle specials with L1, and change the height of your flying with R1 and R2. In the heat of battle, it takes a bit of getting used to, but when you learn the system, it can generate combat that really looks like the anime series. You can also freely fly around during combat and pull off quick warp attacks and dodges, which look great. Sadly, the depth of combat dies a bit when you figure out that the whole affair boils down to dodging an attack, pummeling your opponent from behind, finishing with a super move, and repeating. The rest of the game is just flying around, talking to people, doing some relatively meaningless quests, and leveling up. Without the DBZ theming, this would be really bland (and even with it, it kind of is). However, Iโd be lying if I didnโt say that I had a smile on my face while doing even the mundane things in the game. Itโs just fun to exist in the Dragon Ball world, and the game does an admittedly good job of letting you explore it, far better than any prior game in the franchise. This is an action RPG, not a fighting game. If you want deep fighting mechanics, check out Dragon Ball FighterZ. GRAPHICS The visuals in this game are gorgeous. I love the bright, cel-shaded look. It mirrors the series well. I think FighterZ looked a little better, but Iโm happy with the visuals here given the broader scope of the game. SOUND While I personally prefer the Faulconer Productions score, the use of the Kikuchi score is great too. If youโve watched DBZ with that score, it feels just right. As with most DBZ games, the Funimation dub and Japanese cast are all here, and both versions are excellent. The sound effects are all great, and the whole experience really puts you in the Dragon Ball world. SUMMARY Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a well-made, fun action RPG. I really believe itโs a 3/5 without the Dragon Ball elements though. Thereโs something to be said for living in the world of Dragon Ball, and that ups the quality of the game. The combat is fun, if repetitive, and the exploration is neat, if also repetitive. The game clocks in around 30-40 hours for a relatively complete play through, and it felt right to me.

As a longtime fan of the original show, I freaking love it!
It should almost go without saying, but this game was made for fans of the show. If you liked the show and you like action-RPG video games, you'll probably love this game. If you have been playing with the idea of rewatching the original show, this might actually be fun time-saving way to hit all the major plot points with some excellent combat in between. If you've never watched the show, this might be an alternative to 9 Seasons of DBZ, watching Kai or Abridged (although don't rule those great options out!). If you're not sure how you feel about DBZ, maybe watch a few videos of gameplay or play a demo before deciding whether to buy or not. The most exciting parts of the game are the combat encounters. They are slick and fast-paced, with enough special attacks and mechanics to keep you from getting bored just mashing the melee button. The 3D, in-flight, fighter-esque combat is probably the most standout feature of the game. The storytelling is accelerated and the animation is great. Much of the original voice cast is present and everyone does a great job. The open world adventure aspect is pretty standard fare and the sidequests are typically very short. While it is fun to fly around as any of the characters and smash through rocks, I didn't find that I needed to do a lot of extra roaming around looking for power-ups and items or grinding for XP. If you follow the story and side missions, you'll be at a level where you can move forward through most of the game. Like I said, I'm having a blast playing it. If you think you'll love it, you probably will. Don't let the milder reveiws online discourage you.

A playable episode
I grew up watching DBZ and playing a poorly translated DBZ RPG on the Super Famicom on an emulator, so when they announced this game I got really excited. And I felt like they absolutely delivered. The game covers everything from the Saiyan saga to the Buu saga. It's not completely customizable, like Goku vs Frieza is a one on one fight, but there are intermissions and side quests that fill that void. The only thing that felt weird was you're supposed to win fights that the characters lost in the show. With Goku and Piccolo, you have to win the fight with Radditz, and Vegeta beating Frieza just felt weird. But still a great game all round. 5/5 would buy from this developer again

Excelente

Fun and addicting in my opinion!
A great game to experience the overall story in dragon ball z. The combat is easy to learn and the fights aren't too difficult. If you have trouble with some fights, just notice the attack patterns and strike when they are open at the end of their attacks. You can fly around in the game, but enemies can chase you down and stop to fight. If you don't feel like fighting, press R3 to unlock from the opponent and fly away to escape the fight. Overall, I feel this game was amazing. After finishing the game, I wanted more dragon ball so I started to watch Dragon Ball Super. Now I can't wait until the next game!
