Absolute drop-in Replacement for 57 year old Bulldog Pushmatic Panel

I have never replaced a circuit breaker before so looked at youtube first. Waste of time. There isn't a single one I would recommend. They spend all their time saying what a poor design it is or doing the typical clueless screechy hip youtube presenter schtick. Still it's worth watching a couple so you can see what's behind the panel before you start.I have experience replacing switches and outlets in my own house, and I've installed whole house fan and ceiling fans. I'm not an electrician, but I'm a careful worker. If you've ever replaced a switch or a socket in your house, obviously you are still alive so you're going to want to use similar judgment and precautions here. One thing that is behind the panel is LETHAL voltage. Do something stupid and your end may be loud and dramatic. And those voltages are exposed on this panel more than they are on other more modern panels. So if you have zero experience working with house wiring, you might want to reconsider. and hire an electrician.I'm not going to do a step by step simply because I have no idea who is reading this and how likely they are to follow what I say. General rules:1. TURN OFF THE MAIN CIRCUIT BREAKER before you doe ANYTHING.2. Don't touch anything metal inside the panel.3. Measure the voltage on the big bus bar straps to MAKE SURE the main circuit breaker successfully cut off the voltage to the panel.4. Even if no voltage is present, assume that it still is and don't touch anything metal.Basically, all you have to do is loosen the screw(s) holding any wiring to the circuit breaker and move the wire aside. Mine was a dual circuit breaker so there were two wires. Unscrew the single screw attaching the old circuit breaker to the bus bar and pull the circuit breaker out. Compare it to your new one and you'll see how it just slides right in. Attach the single screw. Attach the wires to the same locations on the new one that they were attached to on the old one. That's pretty much it, but again, there are lethal voltages involved so you must know how to shut those voltages off AND know how to measure them to make sure they are off before proceeding'.So far very satisfied that the new Pushmatic circuit breaker is at least as good quality as the original. Probably better since modern manufacturing tends to be better for things that can cause legal action against a company. If you have any doubt about your abilities, get someone with experience to do it. If you're convince it's all no big deal, you may not understand the hazards. It's an easy job, but it is a big deal.

Very good experience despite missing screw!

If you're missing a screw, just call the manufacturer. They’re very nice, quick to ship and I received some extras. Easy peasy! It took less time than writing this review.I purchased 4 of the p2020 Pushmatic breakers.Very good customer service experience.

Doesn’t fit all pushmatic panels

Proprietary, will not work in Pushmatic panel not designed for twin/tandem breakers. Verify you panel has the cut notch for twin/tandem breakers.

Great!!

Nice to find a replacement for a Pushmatic breaker. I don't know what people are talking about having to modify this breaker. The one I got was brand new and fit perfectly. I've been in the electronic business for forty years and would never modify a circuit breaker! People must be trying to install this breaker where it isn't meant to go. This breaker ran my AC unit for 10 hrs. straight in my RV without tripping like my old one. Thank you Connecticut Electric!!

Works Only After Modification

For those of us who have obsolete Pushmatic electric panels, these breakers are among the few choices for replacement or expansion, short of a costly replacement of the entire panel with a new one. Big box stores and even wholesale electrical supply houses rarely stock Pushmatic breakers anymore. These two-pole models, which double the possible connections at each breaker position, should be direct replacements for the original single-pole breakers, but they must be modified in order to be installed in most panels. The small metal plate (pictured in my photos) must be ground away or removed BEFORE this breaker will fit. Otherwise the metal plate prevents the breaker from being inserted all the way and secured (screwed) to the power buss. Once the modification was done, these breakers worked okay for me. Unlike the original ITE breakers, which had tiny, hard-to-read windows, these expose a red label showing when they're off. They worked for me, but the inconvenience of having to modify them prior to installation cost them a star.
