The manual is unclear and not very descriptive. Is there at least a visual guide or better yet, a video guide to show how it operates?

You have to make sure the drain tube is attached to the washer in the upright position. Otherwise all the water drains out. When finished washing, detach the tube and let the water drain out.

How does the washer connect to the sink? Does the unit take water in from the sink or only drain into the sink?

you will get a hose that just fits over you sink and it will drain with the hose attach into your sink

How do you start the washer?

Fill with water, set which mode you want to use - spin or wash - and turn the timer dial to the amount of minutes you want. The machine will start to work as soon as you move the timer dial.
