Set in America in 1962, Green Book tells the heart-warming true story of Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), a working-class Italian-American bouncer who takes on a job as a chauffeur for Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali), a world-class Black pianist. The mismatched pair embark on a two-month tour of concert venues in the racially charged deep south and discover they’re on the road to a meaningful and unique friendship. Great book, based on a true story
A very well acted film, covering the relationship that develops between a brilliant ,famous piano player and an not well educated immigrant Italian American "fixer" who drives him around various concert halls in the early winter of a segregated USA. The piano player is black, and looks down on the Italian American whom he finds distasteful, and whom he assumes is a thief amongst other preconceived judgements he makes about his driver. The driver, we see in an early scene, is not too happy to have his wife alone with black plumbers in his apartment, and gets some male cousins to be there too. As the story unfolds, both go on a journey. The actual concerts and travelling are really just a backdrop. The real journey is not the concert halls and towns, although there are many incidents involved. The real journey is how each of the protagonists learns to see, and appreciate the talents and abilities the other person has. Talents and abilities which enrich their lives. The music, and virtuoso skill, and courage of the black piano player, gives a growing appreciation and respect to the driver. In return the piano player learns to appreciate food, jokes, life and beauty in simple things and a different courage from the driver. A great story that deserves a very wide audience.

An interesting story and a good watch
It's an interesting truth-based story and one worthy of a film, certainly. The trick is to avoid the clichéd acting of an Italian-American wisecracking hard man 'minder' from the Bronx - and to present a 1962 black concert pianist in a rightly intelligent and sophisticated way. Throughout, we thought that both principle actors managed that very well (see special features interview with Tony Lip's son). Indeed, Viggo Mortensen all the way through made the character distinctive and real (and likeable) and Mahershala Ali captured a convincing tone and manner (and stance/ bearing) very nicely. Well done both. It could of course have been made darker (a la Mississippi Burning or In the heat of the night) but it made a significant point nonetheless. **Slight spoiler alert** There were, however, a few irritatingly over sweet moments - not least 'getting home for Christmas' (where every cliché seemed to have been employed - a bit cloying to say the least) and the north USA cop pulling them over on the way home, only to be helpful and respectful (in stark contracts to their experience with various southern cops). But that apart we found it a warming and enjoyable film. That it was a double winning Oscar is, however, something of a surprise - but that's academy awards for you. All in all, a very watchable and likeable film that can be viewed more than once.

Fantastic Film
Amazing film, Viggo and Hershal have done an outstanding job portraying the two characters. Love the character development within the film, shows how Dr Shirley has a positive influence on Tony.

Based on true story.....inspirational....
....educational. Very moving portrayal of circumstances out of the individuals’ concerned control. An eye opener for people like me who did not know that The Green Book ever existed. Prompted me to research, wanting to learn more. I found it heart breaking and so bizarre that people are not taken as individual people, but utterly and totally assumed to be a “certain sort”, just because they sound different, look different, skin colour being the main assumption of “undesirable”. This story is relevant in every way in 2020, and into the future. This film should be used as a tool in schools, universities, debated. Children and young people involved in role play in schools. All politicians are invited to watch this film and debate. Education, talent, employment, ethics, integrity, all are required by every human being. Leaders in every country of the world must be in their leadership role only because they will always work for the benefit, acting always in the best interests of every human being on planet earth. The glaringly obvious irony. Brilliant. I thank the real life people depicted by the actors for allowing their story to be told. It raised my own self awareness, and gave me insight....as Elvis sings about judging others.....”walk a while in my shoes”.
