Why do some reviewers recommend using distilled water?

The manufactor reccomends it because the minerals in tap or bottled water will stain the bottom of the burner and you have to use vinegar to remove it. The instructions say over time it will cause discoloration to the eggs- don't know because after the first few times using tap water and then having to scrub the bottom with vinegar, I went out and bought a gallon jug of distilled water for 99 cents. Well worth the money.

Some of the negative reviews complain that the water bubbles out of the cooker while in use. how common is this problem and why does it happen?

I purchased one of these cookers about a year ago. Had problems with water boiling out, eggs cracking, and discoloration in the metal cooking pan. I was filling the water level to the top of the measuring cup as that's what I thought was needed. Was also using tap water. After reading all the questions/answers on Amazon, and the directions in detail, realized I was doing a lot of things wrong. Many comments were made about poking the hole in the top of the egg, I didn't know what the top of an egg was until reading these questions/answers, it is the large/more rounded side, which should be facing up when you get them from the carton. I was poking the pointy end. So I tried spraying a little cooking spray in the base of the metal cooking tray and did not fill the water measuring cup to the highest level. None of the eggs broke, no water boiled out, the eggs were super-easy to peel, and the little bit of dark discoloration on metal cooking tray came out completely after adding a little warm water. So what I thought were product defects were of my own making.

Does anyone know is this item is BPA free???

Hi Jenn - According to the owner's manual for my CEC-10, all materials that come in contact with the food is BPA free. Hope that helps!

Did the eggs break when poking a hole?

I've never poked a hole in an egg. About every other time an egg will crack, but not frequent enough to worry about it. I just eat that egg immediately.
