It's a rollercoaster of a read, and it is amazing well written. It has some of the same aspects and foreshadowing style of The Stand by Stephen King, but in my opinion this book is better. There's a lot more to this plot line, and it definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat. 10/10 would recommend. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Not a New Plot, but Entertaining *by M***D on Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2012* In "Sick" Brett Battles give us a fast and entertaining read. Looking for a way to depopulate the world's burgeoning masses a black ops group (or Shadow Government" take your pick) is working to perfect a killer virus to let loose upon the world, only thing lacking is a vaccine to keep alive those who will be chosen.Late at night on a desolate military base recently opened, Captain Daniel Ash is awakened by the cries of Josie, his daughter. He rushed to her room to find her burning with a high fever. Calling for his wife's help, Ash put Josie in a tub and filled it with cold water. Returning to his bedroom wondering why his wife Ellen had not answered him Ash finds she has died while asleep. Filled with horror Ash dialed 911 then remembered he has not checked on his younger son Brandon. Finding Brandon okay, Ash carried his son to the bathroom to be with Josie. They hear the front door being smashed, it is going to be okay, paramedics have arrived. When the footsteps reach the bathroom Ash is surprised to find men entering wearing biohazard suits.The nightmare begins.Put in isolation, Ash soon finds out all of his neighbors have died and told by his captors his children have died as well. Unfortunately the virus is spreading unwanted to other communities; it was let loose on Ash's neighborhood with the intent to keep it contained and find someone immune to it so a vaccine could be developed. All that is left is to dissect Ash and produce a vaccine, except Ash has other plans, he wants to find out what happened to his children, and then he wants revenge.This conspiracy oriented novel will grip you from the first dozen pages as the reader is thrown right into the action.Not a literary great novel, but rather a very entertaining read that is difficult to put down once you have read the first chapter. The characters are believable, the plot plausible, and the story flows at an even pace with the action timed to keep the story moving along.I look forward to reading the sequel, "Exit 9" to see where Brett Battles takes the story line. This was a fast and entertaining read that can be finished in just a couple of days. The pace of action draws the reader in to keep reading. I recommend it for light reading, especially those who like apocalyptic themes. I give it 4 stars. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Fantastic Thrill Ride From Start to Finish *by W***G on Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2013* Wow, it's been quite some time since I flew through a book the way I did with Sick by Brett Battles. So many of my reads lately have been difficult to get into, so much so, that I have actually given up on three, which is very unlike me. The thrill and joy I usually receive from reading just wasn't there with them, my mind constantly wanting to flip on the TV or go browse Facebook rather than continue with the books. It was sad. Nothing was working. I felt at a loss, my greatest pleasure in life being denied to me. But then I opened up Sick on my kindle, which I had downloaded during a free period a few days earlier, and found myself completely hooked.It begins with a simple cry in the night, one that wakes Daniel Ash and causes him to check on his daughter, his mind thinking this is nothing more than a simple nightmare and that coaxing her back to sleep won't take long. He is right in one respect; it is a nightmare, only this one takes place in the waking world rather than the sleeping one. His daughter is sick, something within her quickly destroying the body she occupies. And she isn't the only one. His wife is already dead, and the people in the houses surrounding his are all plagued with symptoms and succumbing at an alarming rate. Thankfully a team of military-like personal move in quickly and secure the area preventing a widespread contamination - only how did they get there so quickly after the first signs of trouble? Also, why are they keeping Daniel Ash in a prison-like setting after it becomes pretty clear he isn't sick and actually immune to the virus?Something isn't right . . .My reading of Sick couldn't have come at a better time, because, as I said above, I was growing more and more upset with the lack of excitement I was feeling with the books I had been reading. Sick, however, reminded me of what it is I love and why I prefer to sit down and read during my free time as opposed to turning on the TV or jumping online. It is a story that grabs you from page one and doesn't let up until the end, one that gives a wide variety of characters, many unknown to each other, who are all circulating around a central conflict that could, if not contained, spell the end of mankind. Even better, this tale, while able to stand on its own, is the beginning of a much larger body of work, one that promises to be an exciting journey.
