## Questions & Answers

**Q: Would this be a good product for tumbling glass? Im trying to make my own sea glass for craft projects.**
A: I use the heavier grit for glass I want to have the sea glass look. Usually 2 days on thick glass. Thinner glass like stained glass I use the fine.

**Q: What is the best way of discarding grit?**
A: I'm not sure of the best way, but I take it outside and rinse it out of the drum with a water hose. We have a gravel walkway so this works for me. Hope this helps.

**Q: New to tumbling. Are all coarse grit products created equal or do some work better for first step of tumbling?**
A: Each grit preparation is graded by particle size: the larger the number, the finer the grit and the less of your rock the grit will take off. For coarse grit, the lower the number (or range of numbers since the grit you buy has a range of particle sizes in it) the more rapidly it will grind down the rocks you are tumbling. If you are tumbling very hard rocks like quartz you might even need a coarser grit or repeated grinds of your usual coarse grit, or if you are grinding something soft like calcite, fluorite, or sea glass you might need to skip tumbling using coarse grit and go directly to medium.

You may find that using similar products from different suppliers give you different results and sticking with the same compound (e.g. silicon carbide) from the same supplier gives you more predictable and satisfactory results.

You are embarking on a fascinating and creative, possibly lifetime journey--enjoy.

**Q: would this work for cleaning a bunch of really old coins?**
A: This is from rocktumbling.co:
What grit should I use with coins?
Some people like to tumble modern coins found with a metal detector.

The best grit to use on coins is pea gravel.

Before you tumble your coins, you will want to separate your valuable old coins from your clad as there are less destructive cleaning methods available to clean valuable coins.

Also, you will want to separate your copper from your other coins. If you have pennies with your nickels, dimes, and quarters, you will turn them to a copper color.

Pennies struck before 1983 are copper, so be sure to pull those out (if you can even read the dates).

If you tumble zinc pennies, be aware that some may not survive tumbling due to the nature of how zinc oxidizes.

Beyond coins, if you want to shine up other metals, crushed walnuts are the media of choice.

Make sure that you dry off any metal immediately and put it in an area that gets much airflow. Leaving metal wet after tumbling will cause it to tarnish and oxidize quickly.
