## Description

Product Description The first of three epic instalments in director Peter Jackson's blockbuster prequel to his Lord of the Rings' trilogy. Set in Middle-Earth 60 years before events in The Lord of the Rings, the story follows the adventures of Hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), who, at the instigation of the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen), suddenly finds himself co-opted into joining a company of 13 Dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) to help reclaim the Dwarves' lost kingdom of the Lonely Mountain from the clutches of Smaug the dragon (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch). After setting out on their quest from the safety of Bag End, the band of travellers soon find themselves pitted against a range of strange and fearsome opponents, in addition to a small, slimy creature known simply as Gollum (Andy Serkis).Extra ContentBlu-ray Disc • "Video Blog #1: Start of Production" • "Video Blog #2: Location Scouting" • "Video Blog #3: Shooting Block One" • "Video Blog #4: Filming in 3D" • "Video Blog #5: Locations Part 1" • "Video Blog #6: Locations Part 2" • "Video Blog #7: Stone St. Studios Tour" • "Video Blog #8: "Wrap of Principal Photography" • "Video Blog #9: "Post-production Overview" • "Video Blog #10: "Wellington World Premiere" • Theatrical Trailers - Trailer 1• Theatrical Trailers - Trailer 3 - Dwarves• Theatrical Trailers - Trailer 3 - Letter Opener• Theatrical Trailers - Trailer 3 - Bilbo Contract• Theatrical Trailers - Trailer 3 - Gandalf Wagers• Theatrical Trailers - Trailer 3 - Gollum Paths• New Zealand: Home of Middle Earth desertcart.co.uk Review It took some time for Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson to return to Middle Earth, but the wait was very much worth it. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey starts off by playing strongly to its links to the previous adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings trilogy, before setting off on an adventure of its own. The first of three films based on The Hobbit, An Unexpected Journey isn't a fast film to get going, but it does spent quality time introducing its key characters. Most moviegoers are more than familiar with Sir Ian McKellen's Gandalf of course, but the collection of dwarves and Martin Freeman's take on Bilbo Baggins are all brought together, and the adventure ensues. It's a journey that's punctuated by terrifically orchestrated action sequences, a swirling score, and lavish production design. Furthermore, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has one or two real standout moments contained within its running time, not least when we finally get reunited with Gollum. The sequence where Bilbo Baggins and Gollum come face to face is as good as anything Jackson put on screen in the Lord Of The Rings films. And while The Hobbit doesn't quite capture the magic of the earlier trilogy often enough, there's a lot here to enjoy, and plenty left to look forward to. It's beautifully, beautifully presented on disc, too. --Jon Foster

Review: Absolutely wonderful - Absolutely wonderful movie. I didn't think anything could be as good as Lord of the rings but this is very close
Review: A FANTASTIC FILM. - Both myself and my nine year old son love this film. Ihave read the book many times, but even in my mind I had not imagined such an epic scale. I was blown away by the opening scenes of the lonely mountain. The film finishes with an absolute riot of action in the misty mountains, and we cheer every time as the dwarves carve their way through the goblin hordes. The film is very well structured with times of action seperated with quiet plot development. The film also balances humour with menace and sadness. The acting is superb, I think Thorin is the star. His character has so much depth as the noble dwarf trying to save his people and regain his family honour, even though he knows he is going to his doom. There is so much sadness in his character, and I really feel for him. There are lots of brilliant scenes and great moments, so watch and enjoy. I have read that some think the film is too long and does not need 3 films. For me it is too short and can not wait until the extended version comes out. I have waited 40 years to see this film and I dont think there will be another one in my lifetime, so the longer the better. Personally I loved seeing Radagast, and the white council and am looking forward to more of Dol Guldur in the next film. There are some parts of the book that are " a bit fairytale " but then it was written as a childrens book. It must have taken a lot of headscratching to figure out what to do about the stone giants, and the talking trolls, which do not really fit in with the rest of the LOTR creatures. But I am glad they are in. A bit slow to start ? maybe. After a few watches I do tend to fast forward though a few bits, but so what. I have already had my dream come true, would asking for a film of the silmarilion be just too greedy ? But can you imagine a film of Beren and Luthian ? wow how good would Morgoth and Angband look ! and all those dragons and balrogs at Gondolin wooo. Sorry about the spelling. Barrelrider.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Not for Purists, But Superb Anyway
*by F***X on 25 May 2013*

Having just watched this film, I feel compelled to review it (something I don't normally do for this type of movie)just to try and help counteract the vitriolic comments and critics' campaigns against it and its director in newspapers like The Guardian. Since its release, there has been something of a witch-hunt against The Hobbit, verging on hysteria among those very vocal purists. Contention seems to range from the interpretation of Tolkien's book, to making it in three not two parts, to the technical decision to film in 48 frames per second (not 24). Peter Jackson must be wondering if releasing the forthcoming instalments is now worth bothering about. It certainly is. Under some influence from this clamour, I bought the Blu-ray and watched, expecting very little. On the contrary, just under three hours raced past with ease - even though one critic called it slow and hard work (did he see the same film?). This is total entertainment of a very high order. Jackson and his team offer extraordinarily high production standards and commitment to their source material, comparable to what we expected (in a very different genre)from a Kubrick, or today from James Cameron. Jackson for me is in a special category of directors. The Hobbit looks fantastic on Blu-ray. The cast is great, not least Martin Freeman, who make the story engaging, good natured and exciting. I rather liked Ken Stott and James Nesbit. You care for these interesting characters and want to travel in their company. It takes itself less seriously than The Lord of the Rings, which some may or may not like. The decision to offer a cinematic 'interpretation' and creatively expand on the original book seems a valid one, even though I can say that I loved the original Tolkien story. This revision has so far been done with skill and imagination. Purist must obviously stay away, to protect their delicate sensibilities. The rest of us can look forward to two more parts with reliable anticipation. Ignore the criticisms. Buy and be entertained.
