At it's shortest, it is 30 inches. Two poles can be made up that are 6 feet 3 inches. One pole can be made that would max out at 10 feet. Hope that's a better answer than "perfect". **Q: Are they ( if secured in place) sturdy enough to hold up a sun shade over an open roof balcony?** A: I suppose it would depend on the size of the sun shade. We used them to hold one side of a 8x14 sun shade and they worked great. I’ve ordered two more sets. **Q: How do you connect them together? Mine didn’t come with any instructions.** A: They are two separate poles and do not connect together. **Q: Would these poles work for a tarp on a beach with all the salt in the air and splashing by sea water? How long it will take to rust in to dust?** A: I believe they would absolutely work for beach tarps. Rusting into dust is a bit more complicated. I figure you could get a couple good seasons out of them, but if you wanted something more durable, aluminum or carbon fiber would be a better (but more expensive) choice.
