Q: How strong is the intake, will my betta get sucked in?

It is only as strong as your air pump this has no moving parts, BUT no it has not been a problem with mine. You hook it to an air pump so just get a small one

Q: I am currently using a tetra air pump. The media in my unit Is now barely moving. Do you recommend using another brand?

You need I'm guessing a bigger pump. Mine first was in a 20 Gallo with a 20 gallon pump now in a 40 I upgraded to whisper 40-60 and it works also the air stone may be cloug. I'm sure that's it.
