At the peak of its power, the Roman Empire stretched thousands of miles in all directions: north to what today is England, westward to Spain, to Armenia in the east, and Egypt in the south. The growth, development, and cultural achievements of that magnificent civilization are brought to life by the artist John Green in this exciting and fact-filled coloring book. Focusing on a 200-year period in Roman history (100 B.C.โA. D. 100), 41 finely detailed illustrations depict such events as the defeat of Germanic invaders under the leadership of Marius (c. 108 B.C.); the crushing of a slave revolt (71 B.C.); the assassination of Julius Caesar (44 B.C.); and the emperor Nero playing a stringed instrument while Rome burns (A.D. 64). Also included are handsome views of the Colosseum, a Roman villa and banquet, artists at work, and much more. In addition, William Kaufmanโs clearly written introduction and text provide a wealth of information on Roman religion, society, cultural life, major landmarks, leaders, and daily activities. Fascinating and thoroughly researched, Life in Ancient Rome will appeal not only to coloring book fans of all ages but also will serve as a valuable resource and learning aid for students and history buffs alike. Review: Very Educational - This coloring book is wonderful for older students, jammed with information on ancient life in Rome. Each page has more than a paragraph of info. Highly recommend Review: Great for Adults too - Any Ancient Rome enthusiast would love this coloring book young or old. It gives a caption at the bottom of each picture to show what is happening in each scene along with dates. Pictures are probably not easy for younger kids to color seeing as there's lots of detail.

Another educational joy for all generations.
Another educational double winner. This is another therapy winner and educational payoff as well. Don't miss this way to teach yourself things you have probably forgotten about Rome as well as teaching your younger ones and helping them learn to love history as well.

A Good Colouring Book- A Fabulous Resource.
Life in Ancient Rome works on two levels. It both entertains and educates. Firstly as a colouring book this is excellent and surprisingly cheap. Some details are small and require care and skill to shade. True you would be better with coloured pencils rather than paints or pens as both will bleed and actually go through the pages. The paper is not robust and the siren's call of the photocopier set to 131% beckons. Secondly if you are in Education then this is the book for you. Each page has a decent caption and explanation. The subjects selected are excellent and very detailed with a good selection of subject matter. That must have been a problem for the author John Green. The Ancient Roman World was so vast and covered such a long time it must have been very hard selecting which subjects to depict. I think he has done a brilliant job. True there are a couple of mistakes- thumbs down in the arena gladiator fights? And the scene of Capri with Tiberius watching criminals being forced over the top of the cliffs- true he was rumoured to have done this but I have been to his palace in Capri and the angles are wrong. Would Romans worshiping as Christians have worn Togas to do so? These are very minor niggles indeed and Green has selected well and depicted Roman life, shops living work and the like very well indeed. Now this is an excellent resource for the Teacher doing this topic. As a Primary Teacher and History Coordinator I was always after good resources. This book had to be the best of my purchases for myself. What the drawings do is convey what life looked like in Ancient Rome and they do this really well.. One idea I used to good effect was divide the class into groups and give them a blown up picture from the book. I asked the children to write on the sheet what they think the people could โhearโ in the picture. Then pass the sheet on to the next group and ask the groups to write what the people would be saying- speech bubbles and so on. Then smell, see and so on. Then we got each group to tell the others what had been written. This really got the concept of life in Ancient Rome across. If you are a parent who is studying the Ancient Rome then this is a really good purchase at a steal of a price. If you are a teacher then this could be the soundest investment you could make. John Green the Author has compiled a brilliant book. I would encourage you to take a look at John Green's other books here is a link, to a good one Medieval Jousts and Tournaments Medieval Jousts and Tournaments (Dover History Coloring Book) Get it while you can for pennies.
