Works well on both gemstones and pearls. I just wet my bead in a little dish of water, and then proceeded to drill. After each drilling, I wet the bead again and continue to drill. The bit stays firmly within the collet when tightened appropriately. While there is no instruction "booklet" inside the box, the instructions for how to use the tool are printed on the outside of the box. I found that I had to turn the collet a little right or left to completely depress the button for inserting or removing the bit. That does not disqualify my five star rating. If I were to make a recommendation, it would be to place the on/off variable speed knob, up a little closer to the center of the tool for a little more control of the variable speed with the thumb. Otherwise, I am very happy with this tool.
