Not as good as Crooked Sixpence
Read this with my daughter and thought it was too long. Characters are pretty flat and need more depth. I couldn't "get into" the story and often forgot what was going on in the previous chapter because I wasn't compelled to care for anyone. It made me appreciate the masterful character development and story telling of JK Rolling.

Confusing titles
Is "The Shadows of Doom" the same book as "The Smoking Hourglass"? And is "The Frozen Telescope" the same as "The Deadly Omens"? My son read "The Smoking Hourglass". When I brought him "The Shadows of Doom", he said "I've already read that book but it had a different name". Why would this be? To sell more books?

My son and I started reading this series together and I continued on my own. The imagination and creativity amazes me.

This is EXACTLY same text as in The Smoking Hourglass, word for word. They only changed the title and cover. Super disappointed :(
