In my experience, at least for this jack stand line, there is nothing the 3 ton won't fit that the 2 ton will and the difference in build quality is substantial. Since the price difference is only 4.00 pass on the 2 ton, the 3 ton are far better and only 1.5" total taller. I am not sure why they even make a 2 ton, I guess for the people who want to save 4.00, but the diff in price is not worth the durability difference. I suggest to pay the 4.00. Or maybe there are cars where the 1.5" does makes a difference, but any jack I have ever used goes higher than the lowest setting on the 2 and 3 ton jack stands by several inches, even on the sides of a low vehicle. I consider my car very low and the 3 ton work fine. Obviously I prefer the 3 ton over the 2 by a far margin. I just used them this weekend for brake job. I would do a search in google to find the max height, they also make some stands that are meant for SUVs which go higher. This means that the load placed on the PAIR should not exceed 3 tons. Using 4 stands to lift a 4 corners of a vehicle is not recommended and the pair should be used for both sides of the front or both sides of the rear, not to be used for lifting a single side of the vehicle at the front and rear point. The regulations, at least as it relates to the US, are quite specific on this. **Q: missing safety pin. where can I find or purchase it?** A: Thats a good question? A missing pin means poor quality control. The safety pins that came with mine wouldn't fit properly, therefore these jacks are not safe. After some reviews on amazon and a little digging, I found out that a pair of jack stands rated at 3 tons will support 1.5 tons per jack stand. Because of this, I opted to purchase these 6-ton jack stands to add a “factor of safety” to my oil changes and other minor repairs. Although this purchase may have been overkill for my uses, I am very happy I opted to upgrade to the 6 ton jack stands. These are seriously solid quality – after jacking up my 2011 Avalanche, I threw my weight into all sides of the car and the jack stands held SOLID – the car didn’t even flinch. My girlfriend’s midsize SUV didn’t move either (shocking). These are heavy jack stands, and I feel that they will hold up to the test of time. There is plenty of vertical clearance with these jack stands. I was able to easily support my truck to a height which made getting under the vehicle easy. I nearly ran into a problem with my girlfriend’s Nissan Juke – but I was able to fit these comfortably under the Juke at the lowest height. The only thing to take into consideration here is if you have a very low clearance vehicle – these jack stands MAY position the vehicle too high (although I seriously doubt this would be the case). There is one minor installation step on these – You need a hammer and some sort of bar-extension to hammer a small metal tab into the unit to prevent the arm from coming out of the base. It’s a seriously easy step, only took a minute, but it’s important to be aware of this step. Although I went a little overkill with these jack stands, I am very happy with the purchase. An extra $30 now may save me thousands of dollars in hospital bills because of the failure of an inferior product. I cannot comment for professional use, but for the weekend mechanic these are simply a must!
