I have been buying Hot Tools marcel irons for years. If you have hair that won't keep a curl, this is a great iron. It gets really hot and makes nice lasting curls. This barrel is 1.25 inches around which makes a nice soft curl. The iron is the same length as any curling iron and has an extra long cord making it easier to move around the bathroom. After learning how to use a marcel, I can never go back to spring irons again. With marcel grips, you can control the curl so much better and clip the hair much tighter. This is the least expensive marcel I have found and it works like any professional iron.

I have been considering going to cosmetology school and heard from many cosmetology students that using a Marcel curling iron was one of the hardest things to get used to, so I thought I would get one to practice with. For context, I’ve never done well with regular curling irons because my hand/wrist coordination never cooperated and I’d end up more frustrated than anything. I was amazed that after I got the hang of this, it was so easy to use and curl my hair quickly. Because of how a marcel iron is designed, you can do the curling motion without turning your wrist and apparently that was the game changer I needed. Now for this particular curling iron— I love that you can control the temperature. I have fine/thin hair so I don’t need it to be that hot, plus my hair is damaged so I don’t want to fry it off completely. It heats up fairly quickly and is comfortable to hold in my hand. I love the stand, so it doesn’t damage my getting ready table. I always use leave-in conditioner or a hairspray with heat protectant before using it, but it’s easy to clean off any residue from the iron.

I was so excited to get this curling iron it works so good it amazing like it works miracles because my hair will not hold a curl for nothing and I get curled hair i have to make sure that the curls are cooldown before I run my fingers through my hair this curling iron take a little practice to get to use it but once you get the hang of doing it is really easy the reason it takes practice is because this curling iron doesn’t have a spring to hold the bar down you have to use it almost like you were using chop sticks lol

I have been buying Hot Tools Marcel irons for years. MARCEL irons have a LEARNING CURVE since THERE IS NO SPRING-CLAMP. But the pay-off in control and no crease from the clamp are worth it. You can use it as both a rod and a clamp curling iron. Pros: Temperature Control, swivel cord, marcel clamp, rotating handle on clamp so you can easily "roll" it in the palm of your hand, various sizes (I use both a 1" and 1.25") Cons: Temperature control and/or swivel cord seem to last only 2-3 years before they start to malfunction and I have to replace. Tip to avoid accidentally singeing your hair: before placing hot curling iron to hair for first curl of the day, take a damp (absolutely all water rung out, no drips) face towel and wrap it around the barrel, underneath and above clamp of the hot curling iron "wiping off" the hot part. It will sizzle like it is frying at first. It brings the iron down just enough, then use on hair immediately (before barrel can get sizzling hot again). Thank goodness that isn't your hair, right? Alternatively, I first turn on the curling iron to heat up to a very low temperature. The moment I'm ready to start using on my hair, I turn it up to my normal setting. (Example: for my baby-fine hair, 330 degrees to heat up. Turn it up to 380 when I pick it up to use on my hair. When it is 380, I am only allowing each section of hair to have DIRECT contact to the hot barrel LESS than 5 seconds. I still like to use the damp towel method on the curling iron before I touch it to my hair as a precaution, touching the towel to the barrel until the sizzling subsides.)

The design of these irons is meant to be used by professionals, meaning pointed away from the person holding it toward someone sitting in front of them. It's difficult to explain without seeing it, but while with a traditional spring iron, flipping the iron around to use on your own hair doesn't really matter, with a marcel, it requires you to hold the iron completely backward from how it's designed. There are a lot of other things that make a marcel tricky to use, but this means it's even harder to use on yourself than on someone else. So when people complain about the difficulty, they're not exaggerating. I was able to figure out how to use it reasonably well the first time I used it, but it took me at least a week of daily use to be fairly comfortable with it. I've been using it for months now. For a while I thought it was a good iron, but I didn't really know if it was any better than a standard iron. That's until I forgot it while on a trip and had to borrow an old school iron from a friend. The difference is huge. First, a spring iron is actually a lot of work to use after getting used to a marcel. Second, the control and quality of curl with this iron is so much better. It's definitely worth the cost. If you don't curl your hair a lot or aren't comfortable with a normal iron, a marcel might not be worth it. But if you curl your hair regularly and have decent coordination and hand dexterity, this is a great iron.

It is so hard to find Marcelle irons so I ordered this one and the handle was so sticky that I could not use it so I sent it back and ordered another and that one had a very sticky handle as well. Has anyone else had this problem and when I say sticky, it’s almost as if hot hair removing Gigi wax was rubbed all over it and it’s impossible to take it off. I’m so disappointed because I really like hot tools, but I think I just need to find another brand

Have used these curling irons for more than 30 years. It's worth it to master use of the marcel/professional iron as the curls are far superior to those made with spring-release curling irons. If you want salon-quality curls in the comfort of your home ... .

I used several curling iron, curling rolls and the wand but none of them can give me the long lasting beautiful curls. At the end, my hair was damaged and dried out like straw. Not even mentioned my hair turned straight within 2 hours. I've heard about a lot of good feedback of Hot Tools Curling Iron from online and my friends, which made me want to try it. After done some research online, I decided to give the Hot Tools Marcel Curling Iron a try. It's a little bit hard to learn how to use it properly at the first place if you never use a Marcel curling iron, like me. It's quite different from the regular Spring curling iron. I saw a few negative feedback regarding the Spring needs to be replaced after 4-6 months use. I don't want to take a chance. The beautiful curls lasted more than 24 hours when I just use the medium high heat (370 F). Plus, I DID NOT use any holding spray! The only product I put on my hair is the heat protector spray before curl my hair! After I wash my hair, I can feel my hair is a little bit dry but not as bad as other curling irons did to my hair. After I deep condition my hair, it feels soft and shining again. I cannot go back to other Curling Iron. This one is a bit heavier than my other curling irons. I will look into other different sizes of the Hot Tools Curling Iron. My suggestion is always try to test from the lowest heat and slowly goes up to find out which heat level is the best for your hair and holding the curls because every one's hair is different. Always, always use a heat protector spray before start to curling your hair. Do NOT curl the hair while it's still damp unless you want to burn your hair off. BTW, I am not a professional hair stylist but I love to find a great curling tool which I believe I finally found one this time. I am happy with my purchase!
