You can obtain a flash that will be much less expensive than a SB-300 and work properly on a FG. There are no controls just seems to use the TTL circuitry. I have a few different nikons and it worked great on all. Just turn it on with camera in an auto mode and just works. My first one only worked about a year and died. I bought another. Way better than the built in flash but no we’re near as powerful as the bigger flashes. Good for general indoor small room shots with less than maybe 7 people or so. It’s the first flash I grab unless I need more light or creative flexibility. I have the SB-910, SB-900, SB-700 and SB-600 (for my other Nikons that I use). Even though all these work on the camera, the SB-300 is the perfect size. Even the SB-400, which I had and sold, would have been too big and bulky. And, the price is right.I tested the SB-300 on my Coolpix A in a dimly lit room. It took 8 shots in rapid sequence, at 10ft, with no light falloff or recycling issue. The shots were perfectly exposed. The bounce feature was also more than adequate. This flash fits nicely in my small travel bag with camera and Kindle.
