These are sterile and packed in sealed packs - so no concerns about infecting the wound. They are soft but strong - so no worries about leaving bits of cotton behind in the wound either. Useful for mopping up blood and other leakage. A layer of 1-2 swabs provides some protective padding under a bandage. I recently knocked my leg on some large rocks in the garden and broke the skin. In spite of being quick to clean the area with warm water and several swabs, and then applying a medicated dressing, the leg became hot and red and the wound began to discharge a blood-stained fluid. All these signs indicated that the wound was infected. My doctor prescribed some antibiotics but for several days I needed to clean the wound and then apply a pad of several swabs to soak up the discharge as well as provide protection from any further misadventures.

I am the only one in this house who owns cough medicine and a fully stocked first aid kit- these make the perfect addition.
