Beautiful and Effective Bookshelf Speakers
I know many true "audiophiles" will snicker at anyone complimenting the physical appearance of a speaker, as they consider its acoustical performance to be the only thing relevant for discussion. That being said, I wanted a set of good bookshelf speakers that had a real woodgrain finish on the front, as well as the sides. Very few speakers meet that description. Nearly all speakers have black fronts, even if they have wood on their sides. These speakers are very attractive with a wood veneer that wraps around all sides and around the front. Very nice. Now, regarding their acoustical abilities... sound is the movement of air. The more surface area of speaker cone you have, the more air you are able to move. (Forgive me audiophiles... I know that sound quality is dependent upon more than just air movement, and I am over-simplifying it quite a bit... but indulge me.) One way to move a lot of air, is with a huge woofer, measuring 10 inches, 12 inches, or even 15 inches across. Yea... I had a pair of those giant monster speakers back in the 1980's when I was a teenager. Today, I'm in my 40's and I'm not looking for gigantic towering speakers to dominate the room... but I want great sound. These speakers give you TWO (2) sets of main drivers (woofer / mid-range combo speaker cones), each of which are over 5 inches across. Most bookshelf speakers only give you 1 set of drivers. Having two sets of 5+ inch drivers is like having the near-equivalent of a single big 10-inch speaker in terms of the air it can move... but packed down into a much smaller speaker housing. So, with a pair of these, you have a total of four (4) powerful 5+ inch drivers, plus 2 high-quality tweeters. Obviously, these are not super-high-end audio... a quick look at the sub-$200 price point will tell you that. However, for those of us that are not demanding "audiophiles" with deep pockets and a burning desire to drop four figures on a pair of speakers... these speakers are surely the best you can get at... or near... this price point. I am impressed. In fact... I went back and bought another pair of Polk Monitor Speakers.

I like 'em!
I decided to get these as an upgrade to my small "boxy" speakers that were included with my Onkyo CR-445 receiver. I'd like to thank the folks who answered the above question about the speakers' dimensions. These barely fit where I wanted them, but had I gone by the dimensions specified by Amazon, I would have missed out on these! These 150 watt speakers are practically overkill for my little 44 watt receiver, so I do have to crank up the volume a bit more so these speakers can start to breathe, but it is worth it! These speakers have a good amount of bass, so I had to adjust the low pass filter on my Polk Audio subwoofer to balance the lower frequencies out. These speakers don't have the highs that my stock speakers had, but, when I cranked it up, the stock speakers would get a bit shrill, while these simply sound fuller across all frequencies. My Polk Audio 'woofer has lasted roughly six years without any trouble at all, so I expect these will last too.

Good sound for the money
A lot of good quality sound for a small package. My living room is not configured for floor-standing speakers so I rely on bookshelf models. These are a big improvement over my current speakers. They sound good to me through all of the ranges and even handle the low end well. The Vine reviewers will give you all the detail you need; I'm just here to tell you that I am pleased with my purchase and do recommend them.

IMPRESSIVE
These speakers produce a rich open tone with lots of clarity. I'm using a 100 watt per channel Yamaha receiver with them and they really bring out musical detail, even at lower volume levels. I listen to CD's and FM radio, mostly 1960's rock, some classical and a little blues/jazz. The trebles are clear and natural without any shrillness, and the bass is tight with no muddiness. In a nutshell they produce music they way it should sound, natural, spacious and realistic. In fact I have heard various details in familiar songs that come through that i haven't noticed before. And I find no need for a sub woofer, for me the dual drivers bring out low frequencies just fine. Make sure you elevate these speakers on stands or a shelf so they're close to ear level. This really opens them up. The natural cherry finish is gorgeous and very rich looking. You won't be disappointed with these speakers.

Non-standard two way bookshelf speaker: original price $369 helped move 45B's at $200+ when out classed in $169 speaker group.
I gave this speaker one star for a few reasons: 1. I saw the huge reduction in price from original cost and led me to believe this speaker was a higher quality speaker than Infinity Primus P163, I think the Infinity P163 is better. 2. The appearence of two midrange/woofer cones on this speaker just does make it appear better to handle bass than the P163, these two cones individually are really small area wise, both combined might be more surface area than the one P163 midrange/woofer BUT 3. The weight of this speaker is noticably lighter than the P163 its wood may be less weight and its three speakers a heavier weight but I doubt it thus I believe the one P163 midrange/woofer has a heavier internal magnet and guts than the weight of both this speaker's noticeably tiny midrange/woofers together. 4. I think its too skinny for its height and too deep to appear attractive upright, I can't put it on its side how I think it would be attractive. A P163 upright just does look better than this upright the Polk's look better sideways and *******LASTLY, I should have known better than to buy a two way crossover speaker built with a crossover that sends high frequencies to tweeter speaker which is standard engineering and crossover sends midrange and low frequencies to two tiny sized midrange woofers not standard compared to a ton of two way speakers sending midrange and low frequencies to one larger midrange/woofer. One midrange woofer is almost all 2 way bookshelf speakers. I saw I was fooled by just a huge mark down by seeing high original price and thought people avoid 45B's because they were too large for bookshelf's too small for floor or stand. A dimensional quandry how does POLK measure midrange/woofer size? Two too tiny just weak midrange/woofers equals one bigger stronger midrange/woofer. It's easy for me to see that when people purchased speakers in brick and mortar stores where Polk 45B's were near $369 original price they left with a lower price or same price better speaker. $369 originally priced helps move Polk 45B's at $200+ when its worse than a $169 speaker.

Sounds so good
To my ears at least. They are a little "boxy" and the enclosure could have been built better. But they really sound good and when paired with the Polk 15C center channel, Polk subwoofer, and some Polk 35b surround speakers. I can truly enjoy my music and movies at high and low volumes. I will agree with what I've read in several places. These speakers have a break in period. At first I was thinking "Hmmmmm, wonder if I should send them back". But I gave them time to break in and glad I did. Not perfect, but good enough for me to enjoy. The reason I went with all Polk was the speakers I had were "dated" (being kind to my old speakers here). I'm just a stickler for everything being matched. The 5 1/4" mid/bass speakers served well for me. I was tempted to get the 6" speakers but I don't see me needing to get "really" loud any time soon.

These have good bass and sound great
I'm a Polk fan for value/money ratio. These have good bass and sound great. Don't have the bass as the floor standing speakers that I have, but they hold their own. Great sharp sound. I have these wired as a second speak zone, and they work well on their own, or add when everything is turned on. Too much speaker if you just use them as rear surround...but these are great for medium size rooms, or when you want normal volume sound in a house party, and not the club bass sound. If you don't have the extra $$ for the tall standing speakers, you will be pleased with what you get in these speakers.

Worth every dime!
I have owned several high-end speakers from bookshelves to floor standing. I purchased the Polk Monitor 65T, B45 and C25 speakers all at one time for a secondary 5.1 home theater space. I will simply tell you that I’m overly impressed with these speakers. The sound quality is extremely clean and clear. Like all speakers, these need to time “break in”. Out of the box they are a bit “spark” sounding, but after a couple of weeks the sound quality of is a lot “warmer”. I have had these speakers for about a year now, and absolutely love them – Worth every dime I spent… All Pros, not one Con... Oh, if you like room-shaking bass, you will need a sub…
