ProMonitor 1000 2-Way Satellite or Bookshelf Speaker for Home Theater Speaker/Surround Sound System (Single, Black)

So I recently decided that I would upgrade my home theater system and replace all of my equipment with more high end equipment. The system I had included a Yamaha RX-V667 7.2 channel receiver and a set of the Bose Acoustimass 10 speakers. Both of these served my needs very well for a few years, but I decided to sell this equipment, make over my TV room into a media room and replace all of the equipment with new equipment. For what is it worth, my new system is now a 7.1 system and with my budget, it comprises the following: Receiver - Denon AVR-X4000; Center Channel Speaker - Definitive Technology Procenter 2000; Front L/R speakers - Definitive Technology Promonitor 1000; Front Heights L/R - Definitive Technology Promonitor 1000; Surround L/R - Definitive Technology SR-8040BP (Bipolar Speakers); Subwoofer - Definitive Technology Supercube 2000. My room is approximately 13' x 13' with 9 ' high ceilings. This review of the Promonitor 1000 will also consider some comparison to the Bose AM 10 system (which really is no comparison really). Packaging and general - the speaker is well packaged with adequate support and stuffing. Included in the box is the users manual and a small black insert. The speaker comes with a pre-installed stand screwed onto the bottom. This stand is necessary if you are choosing to use the speaker as a stand or shelf mount. In my case, I was wall mounting the speaker so the stand was removed and the small black insert was used to cover the threaded connection at the bottom of the speaker. The speaker construction is very high quality and very sturdy and the speaker is quite heavy (7 lbs) for a bookshelf speaker. There is a binding post at the back of the speaker which accepts banana plugs (I use banana plugs). My only complaint is that I do not like the high gloss piano black finish since this shows up fingerprints, smudges and dust. That just semantics though but hardly anything major to warrant a deduction of stars. One thing to note is that one of these speakers is about 2-3 times the size of the speakers included in the Bose AM 10 system. Sound reproduction - According to the deftech's published specification, this speaker has a sensitivity of 91 db. Bose does not publish its speaker sensitivity, but I did come across an article on the internet where some independent tester performed a sensitivity test on the Bose AM 10 speakers and came up with a sensitivity of 85-86 db. Sensitivity is a measure of a speaker's loudness at 1m if driven with 1W of power. After connecting up theses speakers to the receiver, I did not perform an audyssey calibration since I was eager to hear the sound from my new system. All I did was to just set the speakers to "small' setting, set some rough distances and then set the levels at the highest for all the speakers. Threw on Transformers 2 and 3 and BAM!!!!!!!!..... Amazing sound. These speakers are really crisp and the sound quality is phenomenal. In conjunction with the Procenter 2000, the SR-8040BP and the Supercube 2000, the system sounded great. The Bose speakers never sounded anything like these and I was actually hearing sounds in the soundtrack in a level of purity and quality that the Bose never replicated. I have since performed an audyssey calibration and then adjusted some of the speaker levels to tailor to my preference. Now I can truly hear the potential of these speakers. The level of sound reproduction is so much better than the Bose. Even my wife who enjoys watching movies with me has remarked that the new system and these speakers sound so much better than the Bose AM 10. I mean, do not get me wrong, the Bose sounded ok but, for the quality of sound you get from those speakers, they should be priced less. The deftech speakers fill the room and the house with sound and they are not even cranked to a high volume level from the receiver (between -45 db to -29 db). In comparison, the old Bose speakers were usually played at -33 to -29 db and the results were no way near as astounding. In summary, the Promonitior 1000 are exceptional speakers for a small room and possibly for medium sized room. I plan to add an amplifier later on and by that time, I am sure these speakers would have broken in (as per manufacturer's recommendation) to achieve sonic purity and bliss. I definitely recommend these speakers and have no problems in giving them 5 star!!!! -------------- EDIT UPDATED 29-Dec-2014 -------------- So I tweaked the speaker setup for the room and adjusted the parametric equalizers for each pair of speaker in the room a few weeks ago. The sound quality was more to my liking. I actually used Transformers 2 for my tweaking because I think that movie has top notch sound effects and special effects that really bring out the most in speakers. While tweaking, the sound was 'optimized' at a volume level of -32dB on my Denon AVRX4000 receiver. Since then these speakers have been used for movie and radio listening quite extensively. For the last couple of nights I was watching various movies(Hangover 3, Pacific Rim, Lord of the Rings, Transformers 3) and I found that the sound was quite loud at volume levels between -40 db to -36 db. It was then it occurred to me that the speakers have broken in and were really blossoming just as the manufacturer recommended. I just wanted to provide this update so potential buyers would know that this speaker break in is real and the sound quality does dramatically change after about 20-40 hours of speaker use. The sound from these speakers is even more impressive that I originally reviewed. I maintain my 5 star rating and would rate them 6 stars if I could. Don't hesitate - buy these speakers. Really amazing value for money!!!!

I am a fan of Definitive Technology speakers having owned them in the past. Recently I was looking to replace some large floor standing speakers with something that both sounded better and would look better in my living room. Much to my delight I discovered that Definitive Technology made these speakers in white. I am running a Denon receiver and feeding it all my TV/Blu-Ray/Video Game sound as well as running a turntable through it. I don't have any other speakers or a subwoofer. Just these two ProMonitor 1000 units. Everything sounds GREAT! You simply won't believe the quality and depth of sound that can come out of these little speakers! They produce enough bass for me and I can even feel them shaking the floor upstairs. Of course it isn't shake the whole block bass like you would get from a dedicated subwoofer, but I'm not really into that. The midtones and highs are great and really bring out things that you may have never noticed before in your music and movies. I recommend using banana plugs with these speakers to ensure a good connection. I'm using the Sewell Direct Deadbolt Banana Plugs that you can find here on Amazon. All in all a great speaker. One thing to note is that Definitive Technology seems to make great stands for these speakers, but for some reason only offers the white stand for their ProMonitor 800 speakers which are slightly smaller. The stand with the larger base to accommodate the ProMonitor 1000 only comes in black. I have asked Definitive Technology about this as I would like to get their own stands but would need white to match the speakers. If they don't plan to ever make the stands in white I will probably just try to find some universal white stands that will work with these speakers.

I tell ya, people with sound bars have no idea what they're missing. Definitive technology is awesome. I saw these and figured I'd write this. I bought them in 2010 and I haven't been gentle with them. I've gone through three TVs and two receivers, those were just upgrades. Only thing I've added to this 7.2 set up is two Klipsch Atmos on top of my...BP 6000B I think they are? 2 towers,2 monitor 800, 2 1000, 2 8" pro sub 1000, pro center 2000. never a pop or a crackle with any of them. I think in 2017 a fuse blew in one of the subs. but that's it. they sound phenomenal. Everybody says so. Just don't forget to pop the screen off, they do get dusty on top, see my finger drag? be careful though, it's not a flat piece. It bends at the top. don't snap it. Edit: I forgot to mention I'm using these as my two rear surround, but I have them basically just behind my recliner and it creates an excellent rear center phantom. I watched Halo and every time Cortana speaks it's like she's in my head, it freaked me out the first time. And a couple times after. Like headphones without wearing headphones. The stands that go with these are about the perfect height, surround speaker should be at ear level.

I bought these to replace a Bose Acoustimas system. I added a Polk 10” subwoofer. Finally I can really hear the sounds from the surrounding speakers and the bass is much more forceful and adjustable. I am sure that if I spent even more I could get an even better sound stage but for my 70+ years old ears I can adjust the sound to make movies more enjoyable and music sound better as well. I think buying the refurbed items made for a “sound” investment.

My word, but I have owned a lot of speaker systems in my day. I downsized from full sized Polks to some Klipsch mini satellites, the HD500's. They matched the TV and Movie watching experience of the Polks while taking up almost no room. They were nowhere near as full sounding for music. So, I wanted to get better, slightly larger speakers that I could, nontheless, hide on the TV stand. Decided on these and they make TV and movies sound BETTER and music finally sounds full and clear and lovely. Easily the equal of my full sized Polks and probably more crisp and clear. Great purchase. Great speaker. Super value for the money. Better sounding than my comparably priced full sized Polks that I got rid of. My left and right channels reside behind my DLP Samsung and the center sits on the shelf below the TV. No visible speaker, big, awesome sound.

I started out with the intentions of buying a Sale $350 Yamaha HT in a box. But before I checked out, I listened to these in the BB Magnolia room. Specifically, 4 of these, the Pro 1000 Center and the Pro 800 Sub. What I ended up with was two of these, two Pro Monitor 800's, a Pro 1000 Center and a Pro 1000 Sub, powered by a Dennon AVR X-2000 receiver. Price wise, it's a mixed bag depending on your angle. Compared to where I started, This package was $2100 + tax, and so $1750 over and above what I intended to spend. However, for what you get these are not nearly as expensive as one can go,,, by a long stretch. This system is significantly better than the HT in a box. But it's only middle of the road in terms of high end equipment. As far as sound is concerned, I can tell you that the reason I decided to spend so much extra money was a direct result of hearing these in the Magnolia room at BB. I can not stress enough how amazing these sounded. For music and movies alike, I was gobsmaked to find out the sound I was hearing was coming from something so small. The sound is as clean and clear and crisp as I have ever heard. I can't imagine what the even higher end equipment must sound like. Taken each on their own, they are lacking. These work in concert with each other to produce a sound stage. Each component doing its own particular job and doing it extremely well. And when you hear them all working as one, the results are spectacular. This I believe is due mainly to the fact that these speakers are matched to each other. You can pick and choose between a few different models for each component, but they were all designed to work well together. And this is a clear advantage over buying each component separately from multiple companies. As awesome as these sound together, I don't think you would get the same effect by placing them with different components. I doubt very much that these will sound the same in my living room, as it is far from acoustically prime. But If I get even half the sound quality out of them in my home as I heard at the BB store, I will be very pleased. Size wise, these speakers are all unobtrusive. They look classy and not too out of place. They have a dignified presence. And that makes the sound that they put out all the more impressive. If you want something significantly better than a HT in a box, and you are on a budget, you should give these listen to. Yes, $2100 is not exactly chump change. But you could do a WHOLE LOT WORSE.

I know these are older speakers, but they are an excellent bookshelf speaker for there size.
