The first book by AD 100 designer Emily Summers, featuring interiors that celebrate a new idea of American modernism. Weaving mid-century Continental furniture and modern art by the likes of Frank Stella and Jasper Johns into important American homes, Summers has created a vast collection of cohesive, covetable interiors notable for their streamlined beauty. From a contemporary city penthouse to a 1940s ranch, from Summers' Round House, to her 60s Palm Springs getaway, the homes featured range in period and style, but all will serve as inspiration to readers looking to decorate in a Modernist tradition. Summers shares her building blocks of a great modernist house: how the interior should reflect its setting; how to combine fine art with design; why the interior and architecture must be linked; how to build collections; how to modernize traditional houses; and how to restore existing modernist houses. This is essential reading for fans of modernism and minimalism. Review: A review from a lover of traditional design - Let me start out by saying, I am not a modernist. I love modern traditional design, meaning design that is rooted in tradition but, having been collected over time, includes modern elements in the mix. That having been said, after seeing some online photos I decided to take a chance on this book. In the introduction, the designer describes how she came to embrace modern design, and also her great love for travel. From there, this book has three main sections, each with two or three projects highlighted in each section, for a total of 14 homes. The designers two homes are included in the first section. Having my own preference for more traditional design (and a love for collecting), my favorite chapters were the designers two residences, the two homes featured under "Modernizing Tradition", and also the two in "Hunting and Gathering". As I'm less interested in the "Who's Who" of modern design, I read all the text but frequently skimmed over the specific names that were mentioned. I enjoyed reading the inspiration for each of the projects, and the photos are high quality and lovely. I don't see myself collecting a large volume of books on modern design, but I am happy to add this excellent book to my collection as a splendid example of that style. Review: Beautiful Book - This book is filled with Modern Decor, and each picture i beautifully taken. Perfect for ideas, or just to appreciate Modern interiors. This book is big, and beautiful, Emily Summers is amazing!
