Vario Water filtration Carbon Replacement (2 pack)

Hopefully I don't have to use this since it's in my emergency survival bag but I have it anyways. :) These filters are for use in the (duh!) Katadyn Vario Water filter. They are good for up to 200 gallons. They are just small bags of charcoal. They are the size of the foil pouches that come in top ramen. Very small and compact they fit right into the case that comes with the water filter system. I don't know why this review is inappropriate. There are no obscenities nor any competitor brand names.

I absolutely love the Katadyn Vario water filter, and these replacement packs make it easy to extend the life of my product. The filter comes apart to permit the replacement of the carbon filters and the ceramic filters, which makes the product last longer and provide a varying degree of filtration for different water types. I also own another brand of filter for my day-pack, and another Katadyn for an emergency travel that pack I keep in the car. I consider the Katadyn Vario (and these refill packs) to be the best of the three without any reservations.

I love the idea of it for emergencies. That is why I bought it and have not used it as of yet. It is a replacement for my Katadyn Vario Multi Flow Water Microfilter. It is in my bug out kit. I gave it the 5 star rating because I have used them before and they work very well.

The Katadyn Vario is a great filter, my favorite out of many I've used over the years. Replacing the carbon filtration is a quick, relatively easy way to get that fresh, mountain spring taste back into your filtered water. If you've noticed that the taste of the water has degraded over prolonged use, and your (still technically safe) water now just tastes downright funky, its time for some new carbon for your Vario. This is not a safety need, but having good tasting water is important to staying hydrated while in the woods. The replacement carbon ships with the foam insert that keeps the loose carbon in place, but I gave this product four stars because it can still be a bit messy to replace. Given the option, I would do this fix at home, on a cleaned off flat surface. In response to another reviewers negative comments, the age on this product has no impact on how well it will work. As long as you keep the carbon in the original package, activated carbon remains activated until it is used as a substrate for filtering purposes, and the shelf life on this product is probably realistically measured in decades if not centuries, but certainly not single years. I would not fret at all about getting a package that was even five years from its original manufacture date. For the record though, the packages I received were manufactured within a year of my purchase.

They came shipped as I expected. They worked great. Love this filter. I take it with me on trips overseas so I can filter water on the go so Montezuma cannot have his revenge on me.

For what it is, this is an expensive pouch of activated carbon. It is very fine and high quality though. I guess it is what works best with that water filter.

I am looking forward to utilizing this item more extensively on our many back country camping trips in the future.

Part of being prepared on the Coast so it was a great buy for our current system and works perfectly as a backup.
