Impeccable sharpener
I got this to go with the SOG knife I bought from Amazon. It works great to keep all my knives sharp and the suction cup sticks to and hard surface, cheap product for a sharp knife. Stores anywhere and is lightweight. Perfect design and very easy to use. It also works on all knives like kitchen knives as well.

Fast, easy near-razor sharpening
I bought this because no one else in the house would sharpen knives and they simply mistreat the blades. As a result, every time I wanted to slice something up, it was a chore and I would have to stop and manually sharpen the blade. I've tried a bunch of these types of sharpeners over the years, and while I didn't have high expectations, I figured it was better than nothing. What I discovered was that despite being all plastic, it is surprisingly sturdy. I've been beating on this thing for almost exactly 3 years now and it works as well as it did on day 1. It's crazy easy to use. It gives a very, very sharp edge in very little time using very little pressure (see note about this). The suction cup defies all expectations; I haven't ever had a suction cup that would actually hold something for any amount of time, yet this one keeps grabbing and once it is stuck, it is stuck (smooth surfaces, of course). Note about pressures: There's a temptation to apply downward pressure to the blade as you drag it through the 'V'. If you do this, it can cause the blade to skip instead of smoothly glide through the sharpening surfaces, and this will result in something of a serration being applied to the edge. I did this on a couple of my knives before I pulled my head out of my backside. I refinished the edges and all is well. I've found that just the lightest of pressure (the blade's weight in most instances) will be more than adequate, and just a few pulls of the blade through the sharpening surface will give you an incredibly sharp edge. If you're sharpening a truly dull knife, set aside about 5 minutes to just let the blade glide through the sharpening surfaces and you'll be good to go. The initial re-shaping does take more time to achieve before you can easily maintain a sharp edge. My old $3 cleaver that I bought from AAFES in Japan is razor sharp, and had been dulled to the point of being more of a lever, which had me using it more to make barbaric chops. Now I used it not only for chopping but also for fine slicing where applicable and the edge rivals some of my most expensive knives. In addition to all that good stuff, it is highly portable as it fits in the palm of your hand. I will be getting another one to keep in my truck for when I'm out doing field work and put my knife/blades to work (usually abusive... I'm not gentle with my knives). It's good to have something like this that truly does a good job of putting an edge on a blade without requiring any complex articulation or tomfoolery, and in such a small package. 10/10 would recommend.

I wouldn't trust my best knives to this, but it still has a role
First things first. The countertop suction works as advertised. If you're having problems sticking to the table or counter, then your surface is either dirty or too pourous. Otherwise this locks like epoxy. Does it sharpen? Yes, but it eats too much in my opinion. Literally 2 passes through is all you need. Not a complaint, right? But the bad thing is that you need to further hone your blade after those 2 passes, and this tool doesn't have that option. There is no "fine" setting. I would say this sharpener is PERFECT for garage tools, or machetes, cheapo kitchen blades, stuff like that. I even sharpened a tomahawk with it. But not so great for getting that shave-close edge on your favorite knife.

Great for what it is best at
This sharpener uses tungsten carbide blocks to cut the knife's edge. It's quick and leaves a razor sharp edge...but...that edge is so sharp that it eventually deteriorates and noticeable gaps appear that affect overall performance. I use this sharpener to keep a cheap stainless kitchen knife sharp. That type of stainless steel is rapidly cut and sharpened but a lot of material is removed and once per year I have to replace the knife...at under $15.00. If you are going to sharpen a valuable knife or a combat knive, use stones. This sharpener has a vacuum base that holds it very firmly on a kitchen counter. That feature makes it, in my mind, the best of the tungsten carbide sharpeners. For what it is, I give it five stars and highly recommend it over other TC sharpeners. On a completely unrelated note...James Cameron made maritime history last week when he spent 4 hours at the bottom of the Marianna Trench (which nobody noticed). And he did it with his own money and a grant from The National Geographic Society. One wonders how he managed this without billions from the US Government. The trip was a failure however because he found absolutely no shovel-ready jobs at that depth.

Quick, easy, effective and inexpensive. SOG quality, no doubt!
For the price and convenience it provides, I cannot recommend another product over the SOG Countertop Knife Sharpener. Razor sharp in less than a minute! Fair warning: this removes more material than a typical sharpening as it creates a new edge each time. I recommend using this for refurbishing a banged up blade, but not for applying a new polish edge to a blade already in good condition. In short: If you use this for every attack on the blade, you will be left with a very sharp edge each time, but the handle will be all that is left in short time.
