It is also pretty heavy since the bottom is cast iron. Not sure why the top is removable since it's impossible to set it down flat because of the steel rod that fits into the base. **Q: How, exactly, is this supposed to be washed? Is either to bottom or top submergable? I want mine to last my lifetime and I want it really clean.** A: I know I'm a bit late in answering this, but I'm mostly answering because *a lot* of people in the reviews don't seem to know this bit of information. Cast iron is never meant to be submerged or placed under running water. Like chocolate and oil, cast iron shouldn't mix with water. Ever. With a hot, damp, sanitized rag clean it off. Buttercreams and other fillings should wipe of easily. If the top gets dirty enough that it needs to be washed thoroughly, wash it quickly and immediately after dry it off with a dry, clean towel. It's very important that you use mineral oil on the moving parts. Other oils can cause buildup. Remember to always carry it by the base. You have no idea how many turntables have cracked from a drop and have needed replacing in my kitchen. I tell my bakers every time, but every now and then, someone forgets. Sincerely, a Pastry Chef that highly recommends this cast iron turntable **Q: are you able to adjust the cake stand so that it does not rotate and can be used as a cake stand as well?** A: It's actually not a cake stand but a turn table. It spins to allow the decorator to move the cake more freely. The turntable top is removeable; once the top is removed, you can place a drop or 2 of machine oil to make it move more smoothly without the grinding sound. It is not ment to go up and down but to spin on it's base. It can be used as a cake stand how ever just be careful not to knock the cake over in passing. **Q: Does it have a lock to prevent moving on its own?** A: No it does not. It is still smoother than Wilton's cake stands.
