desertcart.com: English Grammar for Students of German: The Study Guide for Those Learning German: 9780934034388: Zorach, Cecile, Melin, Charlotte: Books Review: An outstanding concise book for helping native English speakers understand the basic workings of German grammar. - Why would someone studying German want a book on English grammar - especially if the person studying already speaks English? Because it's designed to explain what they're trying to learn (German) in terms of what they already know, or with which they're at least familiar (English). This is an outstanding book and well worth the money if you're trying to learn German (and especially if you're trying to learn it on your own). Its 45 chapters are short; to-the-point; and laid out such that simple concepts are explained first, and then built upon in succeeding chapters. The entire book - index and all - is only 168 pages, but lends itself quite well as an accompanying reference to a German curriculum. I'm using this in tandem with the Fluenz German language program (which is also awesome by the way!), and have found this quite useful in filling in details that might not be developed quite as thoroughly in the program. It also serves as an excellent reinforcement for the program's general grammatical concepts. Learning about nouns? Start out with a brief refresher in English as to what nouns are and how they're used in sentences - illustrated with several useful examples. From there, the book then illustrates how German nouns are both similar to and different from English nouns in usage, and provides ample examples to illustrate. Where applicable, general rules of usage are included as well. The chapter then concludes with a brief review of the main points in the form of a brief quiz, the answers to which are provided at the back of the book. There are discrete chapters for each major grammatical element the student will likely encounter, and as noted earlier - the chapters are short, usually only 4-6 pages each. Are there more in-depth German grammars available? Most certainly. But if you want an ideal quick reference that won't require you more time to find an answer to a grammatical concept than it does to actually read and understand the concept, I believe you'll be hard-pressed to find a better alternative. What's more, you're not limited to German. This Olivia and Hill Press book is part of a series of similarly structured books covering a variety of other languages including French, Spanish, Russian, Italian, Latin, and Japanese. There's even one designed for native Spanish speakers trying to learn English. While I can't attest that each of those others is of the same quality and usefulness this one is, I would think they would be comparable and worthy of consideration as well if German is not the language you're trying to learn, or if you want to study one of these other languages as well. Review: Don't try to learn German without it. - This is the clearest, best laid out and helpful book I have found for learning German. English Grammar for Students of German It was more helpful than any other books I have purchased or borrowed from the library. By discussing the similarities and differences between English and German, it helped me put all the information I have read and listened to in the past together into a cohesive understanding of the language. Don't try to learn German without it. I started learning German 1 with an 'audio dialogue only' program I used when working out. I found this to be an easy way to learn and very enjoyable. When I got to level 2, I suddenly became very confused. 'Audio only' no longer worked as well. English has only one objective case for pronouns that are direct objects and indirect objects while German uses two cases. In English there is me, you, he, she, and it in the objective singular. In German you have twelve choices instead of five. The German plural form has 8 choices (counting sie and Sie as 2) instead of 3 in English. After receiving the book, I looked up pronouns in the index and it sent me to chapter 17. Looking at the table on page 80 instantly put everything into perspective for me. After memorizing the table I was able to go back to my audio learning. I am now noticing that my program is using another tense. Soon, it will be back to the book for more memorizing.

Excellent Aid for German 101 Classroom texts
Excellent aid to German 101 classroom books. Here in a concise format are many of the devils in the details of learning German. Along with my GERMAN 101 (first year) class textbook and this book, I'm understanding German a lot better. This small book is easy to use, easy explanations and many samples. It is a definite helper to have the multitude of rules on nouns, verbs, prepositions, pronouns, accusative and dative principles all rolled into an easy reference source.

This in an excellent little book for native English speakers struggling with German grammar. You cannot really know a language or even speak it correctly without a decent knowledge of its grammar. I believe the need for this type of book has arisen due to the complete lack of proper grammar instruction in U.K. schools (I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say few teachers today could explain English grammar). This book really helps demystify the topic as it is quite difficult to learn grammar of a second language when you don't even know that of your own!. All in all I highly recommend this book for those wishing to obtain a proper level of German.
