Southern Comfort

Southern Comfort (1981) is an American action/thriller film directed by Walter Hill and written by Michael Kane, and Hill and his longtime collaborator David Giler. It stars Keith Carradine, Powers Boothe, Fred Ward, T. K. Carter, Franklyn Seales, and Peter Coyote. The film, set in 1973, features a Louisiana Army National Guard squad of nine on weekend maneuvers in rural bayou country as they antagonize some local Cajun people and become hunted. Members of an undisciplined patrol of Louisiana National Guardsmen are meeting in the bayou swamps for weekend manoeuvres. Corporal Hardin (Powers Boothe), a cynical transfer from the Texas National Guard, is disgusted with the behaviour and arrogance of his new squad. A married man, he wants no part of a date with prostitutes that Private Spencer (Keith Carradine) has waiting for the men. Nevertheless, he is befriended by the amiable Spencer, the two seeming to agree that they are the only level-headed soldiers in the squad. This film starred the following actors as their respective characters: Keith Carradine as Pvt. Spencer; Powers Boothe as Cpl. Hardin; Fred Ward as Cpl. Reece; Franklyn Seales as Pvt. Simms; T. K. Carter as Pvt. Cribbs; Lewis Smith as Pvt. Stuckey; Les Lannom as Sgt. Casper; Peter Coyote as Staff Sgt. Poole; Alan Autry as Cpl. "Coach" Bowden (billed as Carlos Brown); Brion James as Cajun trapper; Sonny Landham as hunter; Dewey Balfa, traditional musician, in a cameo role as a Cajun singer and fiddle player; Marc Savoy, traditional musician, in a cameo role as a Cajun accordion player; Frank Savoy, traditional musician, in a cameo role as a Cajun singer and triangle player. I never saw Southern Comfort before getting it on DVD (like Deliverance, I got this film as a Christmas present for my dad after he heard from a colleague at work that the film was supposed to be very good, and I tell you something, he's right about that). Southern Comfort is a very entertaining film which has a similar plot to the classic 1972 film Deliverance as both of these films see soldiers fighting for survival. Very highly recommended.

Superbly tough and atmospheric Vietnam allegory from Walter Hill. Hill's films often have a theme in common - running the gauntlet, and 'Southern Comfort', like 'The Warriors' Warriors - Ultimate Director's Cut Edition (1979) [DVD ], falls into this category. A group of US National Guardsmen on exercises in the Louisiana bayou 'borrow' some boats from the local Cajuns. Unfortunately, the owners of the canoes return mid way through the pilfering. To top things off, an intellectually subnormal Private first class Stuckey (Lewis Smith) fires blanks at the already miffed backwoodsmen from a machinegun. Suffice it to say that things go rapidly downhill from there, as the disdgruntled (hairy, massive, and well armed) locals swap hunting mink for hunting weekend warriors. The interplay of characters is well developed, with Powers Booth excelling as the outsider who's tougher than he looks, and Keith Carradine as a joker turned survivor. Thrown together in a nightmare scenario, bickering turns to deadly score settling as the ill prepared soldiers turn on each other. For many viewers, this film will be all about atmosphere - the claustraphobia of the almost featureless bayou, the dream-like slogging through knee deep water, never knowing when things will get grizzly. This atmosphere is of course enhanced by Ry Cooder's memorable score. The film builds to an almost hypnotic climax at a lively party deep in (seemingly friendly) Cajun country - but should our surviving heroes let their hair down and 'allez, danse!' as their hosts suggest, or should they keep a firm hold on whatever weapons they can lay their hands on? A favourite film from my childhood that's as fresh as ever today. Critical Social Theory and the End of Work (Rethinking Classical Sociology)

This is a criminally under-rated film. It tells the story of a group of US reservist soldiers who go on a training exercise in the Louisiana swamps, and get into a murderous conflict with some local Cajun hunters. The soldiers soon realise that their military training is no match for the skills and knowledge of the blood-thirsty locals who are operating on their home territory. Even the swamp itself starts to become a hostile force to the soldiers. The film reminds me to some extent of "Deliverance" - the themes are similar, though this piece is more action-driven. There are strong performances here, and each of the characters in the squad of nine has a distinct personality - not all of them pleasant. Part of the appeal of the film is seeing how the group functions, and fails to function, when it comes under extreme pressure. I've seen this film several times over several decades, and it's been good every time. Watch it, and you'll have an appreciation of dry footwear forevermore.

Spare, compelling film well made - probably Walter Hill's best. DVD package ok - not many extras, one decent Hill interview.

Not sure why but had expected this to be different to what it was. Something more in the classic realm of 'Deliverance' or 'Platoon'. It isn't terrible - in fact it's rather diverting and enjoyable. But don't expect a serious film - it is very badly written and quite poorly acted, but has a certain 80s kitsch value, and some amusing violence. Oh and POWERS BOOTHE. So yeah...it's kind of ok. Def worth accompanying with a few beers.

What a great movie. One of my favorites. Finally got it on Blu Ray. Picture quality is not bad, but grainy in some scenes. Overall a good flick. Took 3 weeks to get here because of a mail strike, but worth the wait.

結合されていますがこのレビューはASIN：B009GZ98HQ EAN：5028836032410のもの。原題「Southern Comfort」（1981）。英Second Sight社。リージョン2ですがimport PAL盤。劇場アスペクト通りで、かつ画質は非常に良く、英語字幕あり。詳しい仕様は文末にあります。 デビュー作からの4作が絶好調だったウォルター・ヒル監督作ながら日本では劇場未公開。「ブラボー小隊・恐怖の脱出」という題で、昔TVでひっそりと放映され、後にVHSになった。本作を愛する方は多いようで、当時観た方には忘れがたい1作となっていた。私もその中の1人。本年2016年に映画愛あふれるメーカーのスティングレイからBDが出る模様。プレミア化した現在廃版の邦盤DVD仕様は、米劇場公開時アスペクト1.85: 1画面の左右を切り落とし、1.33: 1にしたもの。（ごく一部で借りられるレンタル盤も同様と思われる）。画質はその頁をご覧ください。私は現邦盤購入がためらわれたため、辛抱しきれずにimportで数十年ぶりに再会した（安い）。やはり静かに禍々しい傑作といわざるをえなかった。この後引く嫌な感じは再見時の方がはっきり感じられた。 1970年代のどこか、ルイジアナ州の州兵軍事訓練の中の、9人からなる通称ブラボー小隊の行軍演習。深き広大な沼沢地（Bayouというらしい）に暮らすケイジャン（南部のこの地域に住むフランス系住民で仏語を話す閉鎖的な共同体と描かれている）のカヌーを無断拝借し、戯れに機銃掃射をしたことから、コンパス・地図・ほとんどの弾薬を失い、覚めない悪夢が幕を開ける。 バート・レイノルズの「白熱」だったか「ゲイター」だったかに登場した果てない湿地・沼沢。独特の蔦類の樹木が生い茂り、そのほとんどが膝まで水・泥がつく劣悪な環境。色のないほぼ灰色を背景とし、姿の見えないケイジャンらしき者たちから反撃され、1人また1人と減っていく・・。州道を目指す小隊の正気は喪失・分裂し、ますますパニックのドツボに陥り、輪をかけて愚かになり狂う。まるで地の古の磁場に影響されたように。 派手なドンパチを想像されるかも知れないが、撃ちあいや爆破は控えめにされ、音楽はopとedクレジット、セリフのないシーンに小さく流れる程度（盟友ライ・クーダー。後述）。音響演出が冴えていて、大きく小さく響く、よくわからぬ様々の鳥・虫の鳴き声・羽音・「ばしゃばしゃ」という水音が全編を覆い、わずかに残っていた理性を徐々に蝕んでいく様子は静謐とも言える。異様な光景と併せて、極端に言えば異星のようでもある。それほど主人公らにとってはアウェイな土地。 後半たどりついた友好的（？）ケイジャンの村落。なごやかで賑やかな祭りと音楽。食事や酒のおもてなし。一息つく彼ら。ここからが個人的には真骨頂。Dewey Balfa（バンド？）の奏でるケイジャン・ミュージックParlez Nous a Boiresが鳴り続け、準備される絞首台、ほふられる豚。けたたましいダンスと村人の満面の笑み。徐々に州兵の心に湧き上がる被害妄想、パラノイア。陽気な音楽が逆の効果を生む。めまいを起こすカットバックとスローモーションにヒルの才気を感じる。「It’s the land of hospitality... unless you don’t belong there.」という本作の惹句が本作の本質をうまく表している。「おもてなしの地。あなたがそこに属していない時はこの限りではない・・」。Southern Comfortは米南部の商標登録された地のリキュールで、南部のおもてなし、ゆるりとしたくつろぎ、みたいな意味だが、本作の真逆の皮肉さを考えるとうまい原題だ。みなさん思われたようですが、やはりヴェトナム戦争のメタファーは感じる。具体的には言及されないが、ヒルが本原案・映画化を思い立ったのが76年らしいので、その可能性はある。ただヒル自身の発言は確認できなかったので断言はできないが、邦盤の特典インタビューによれば、意識していなかった模様。 本作の特徴は、舞台が合衆国内であること、ドメスティックな文明摩擦、米のルーラルの多様さ、無知と偏見が産む恐怖。まさに彼らケイジャンたちはEnemy within（内なる敵）。しかしケイジャンからすれば州兵こそが野蛮な闖入者。指揮官以外はWeekend Soldier,いわゆる週末兵士。Civilian in peace, Soldier in warというセリフが出てくる。これは、平時は（良き）市民、戦時は（勇ましき）兵士という州兵のスローガンだ。本作は、訓練中でありながら自ら招いたおふざけと住人軽視により「戦時」に突入する映画であり、プアホワイト・Redneck 対 移民少数民族の攻防。 ヴェトナムを思わせると同時に、囲まれた敵陣からの脱出行という本作の骨子は太古からあるもので、古代ギリシャから19世紀の米先住民（いわゆるインディアン）まで至るところに見られる骨太なプロット。映画ジャンルで言えばやはり西部劇、変種のゾンビものを思わせ（ケイジャンがそうだという意味ではない）、後年の「プレデター」はもろに本作の影響下にあると思う。本作は脳にこたえる異世界感が立ちまくりの泥と恐怖と悪意の迷宮だ。 よく言われるようにブアマン監督の夢幻的傑作「脱出」を思わせる。あちらの主題は都会人が内なる暴力性に目覚めて、自身を恐怖するお話しだった。こちらは「ここが俺たちの暮らすアメリカなのか」「今は戦時下ではないのか」というパラノイアであり、これが頂点に達する最後はハッピーなのかバッドなのかすら、彼らと同じようにわからなくなくなってしまう。観る者にも安堵はない。ラストショットの意味するところ。このもやもやは何だ・・。 ドキュメントタッチであり、イメージショットはなく、直線的な時制等にもかかわらず、抽出されたサバイバルの寓話と言える（「ストリート・オブ・ファイヤーがロックン・ロールの寓話と宣言されたように、ヒルの初期作には寓話性がある）。全編に流れる邪さはフーパー監督の「悪魔のいけにえ」を、果ては「地獄の黙示録」の「王国」シークエンスを思わせる（特にクライマックス以降。規模はまったくミニマムだが）。禍々しきは人間の集まり、という終末観すら漂う。 弦楽器の伝道者である弦楽器奏者、作曲家のライ・クーダーはヒルと名コンビを組み、本作でもメランコリーで気怠いしなびたサウンドを奏でる。彼らの胸の静かな絶望を表して秀逸。役者ではやはり「俺はただのシティボーイさ」とうそぶくキース・キャラダイン。他に、部隊にテンションを持ち込むパワーズ・ブース。他にピーター・コヨーテ、フレッド・ウォードら。ケイジャンにブライオン・ジェイムズ（「ブレード・ランナー」「48時間」）やソニー・ランダム（「48時間」「プレデター」）。彩度を落とした撮影のアンドリュー・ラズロは苛酷な撮影を乗り切った。 ケイジャンや村落の描写、あるいは動物に対する描写に二の足を踏んだのか否かはわからないが、さもありなんという気がする。ヒル監督は90年頃から急速に失速した印象だが、近時のそんなイメージのため、あるいは未公開ということをもって、本作の鑑賞をためらうことは余りにもったいない。本作は2012年に丁寧にレストアされた（らしき）高画質で何より安い。2016年スティングレイ盤はBDで放映時日本語吹き替えが入る模様（現時点では特典不明）。 ★本サイトで買える廉価な本作importは、このレビュー商品ASIN：B009GZ98HQの他に、 1. 英盤Universal, 2001, PAL. 4：3のトリミング版の模様。 2. 米盤Shout! Der Film ist ein bisschen "speziell", hat mir aber sehr gut gefallen. Da nur in Englisch sind gute Sprachkenntnisse nötig. Obwohl ich sehr gut Englisch spreche musste ich manche Stellen mehrmals abspielen um alles zu verstehen (aber das ist schliesslich ein gutes Training). Die Story ist zwar einfach, aber der Film zeigt sehr anschaulich die verschiedenen menschlichen Charaktere in einer schwierigen bzw. aussichtslosen Situation. Auf jeden Fall fand ich den Film bis zum Schluss äusserst spannend. Bei den Szenen am Schluss bei den Cajuns habe ich mich gefragt, wann dieser Film eigentlich spielt. Ich hatte den Eindruck, es müsste vor hundert Jahren gewesen sein. Die Filmmusik von Ry Cooder passt meines Erachtens perfekt zu diesem Film - das war eine sehr gute Wahl. Besonders hat mir das Interview mit dem Regisseur gefallen. Ich finde es echt spannend wie so ein Film gemacht wird und auch Infos zu den Darstellern sind für mich interessant. Fazit: Für MICH ein absolut sehenswerter Film (werde ihn wieder mal anschauen, nur schon wegen der Musik), aber das ist natürlich reine Ansichtssache. Manche finden ja auch "Titanic" den besten Film aller Zeiten ;-)

Uno dei migliori film del regista Walter Hill, inedito in Italia sia in dvd che in BR, qui in un'ottimo Blu Ray inglese (peccato la solita mancanza di sottotitoli in italiano). In Italia il film era uscito a suo tempo nelle sale con il titolo "Iguerrieri della palude silenziosa", ottimo cast di attori non troppo famosi anni '80. Consigliato a tutti gli appassionati del regista e a chi ama il cinema d'azione che faccia anche pensare (tipo "Un tranquillo week end di paura" per intendersi).

Purchased the Blue Ray, upgrading from a (gulp) VCR tape. Love the movie. The seller had the item to me as promised, 2 day delivery. Very satisfied.
