It does give a little lip, but does not play detriment to the sewing. I bought one with a freehand embroidery needle too and it was expensive, around £45 for the two in a set, but it works really well. **Q: Does it have a metal bobbin case? Like a factory machine** A: Yes it does have a metal bobbin and case. The bobbins are amazing in that they hold so much thread. **Q: How much does the HD9 weigh?** A: I don't know exactly, but it feels like it weighs a tonne! Massively heavy, still portable of course, but short distances for very little time, like picking up to put on a table. A firm surface is definitely required to place it on and there is no chance of it moving or slipping anywhere when in use. If you want a straight stitch only machine that can breeze through multiple layers of fabrics, this is the one for you. It's easy to set up, you can wind bobbins at the same time as sewing, there is a knee lever for raising the foot without removing your hands from the project, a thread cutter which is SO useful and extra large bobbins so you don't have to fill them so often. That is the only downside though, you only get 5 with the machine so more must be purchased, and they're not cheap - search around, but I suggest you buy genuine ones from Janome. It's a really heavy machine, it looks plastic but it's coated metal and the extra base length means it's great for larger products. I use this mainly for making bags and I wouldn't be without it now.
