So glad I bought this...
I have a permanent lower retainer which I've had in my mouth for 10 years now. For the longest time, I was considering getting it removed because I hate how difficult it is to floss around it using the threaders and such. I looked around online long enough to realize that the risk of removing my retainer was that my teeth would revert back to their overcrowded, shark-like jaggedness. Anyway, I heard a lot of good things about this Waterpik as an easy and effective solution for flossing between and around permanent retainers, not to mention that it is very healthy for the gums so I gave it a shot. Let me tell you, I LOVE MY WATERPIK! I'm not sure how durable it is, as I've only had it for a few months, but it makes cleaning my gums an easy part of my daily routine instead of a chore (which is how I used to feel about it). The Waterpik seems like it is decent quality, and I would guess that it should last a little more than a year before it breaks. Time will tell, but if it lasts 10-12 months, I would still be satisfied. This product works very well and it was a savior for me as a solution to threading/flossing the frustrating permanent retainer in the bottom of my mouth. The water blasts/pulses are very powerful and you'll be amazed at the kind of gunk/food you'll see fall out of your mouth and into the sink. It is important to keep your lips semi-closed to prevent water from splashing all over the place. If you're not careful, this machine can be messy. Also, be careful not to move up to full power (level 10) too quickly because you might get a little bleeding as my girlfriend quickly found out, but for those of you who floss quite regularly, I had no problem moving to level 10 right away. One complaint that I have is that the water tank runs out too quickly, but it's really not that big of a deal to turn it off, remove the tank, and fill it back up with water. Takes about 10 seconds... no sweat. I have already convinced another friend of mine to buy this and he said that he loves his Waterpik too. In closing, I can honestly say that if I didn't have my lower retainer, I would have never bought this. I don't mind flossing one bit on my teeth that do not have the permanent retainer, but I could imagine that if you don't like flossing at all in the first place, this would be a great alternative to not flossing at all. So I recommend this product to two types of people in particular: 1. People with permanent retainers/other devices in their mouth that are difficult to floss around and through. 2. People who do not like to floss in the first place and are having a difficult time making it a regular part of their hygiene routine. *****UPDATE***** 05/13/2010: For a long time now, I've actually been using my Waterpik to blast the hairs out of the three, four, and five-blade shavers when hair gets stuck in them and the running water from my faucet doesn't do the trick. I haven't checked through other reviews to see if other people are doing this, but the Waterpik is worth it for this function alone. If you're tired of having hairs stuck in between the blades of your Mach 3, Quattro, or Fusion razors (or other manual razors), get this Waterpik and blast those hairs out (in addition to getting yourself an excellent device for keeping your mouth/gums clean). Please be aware that you'll get a little bit of splashing, but it's great because you can use those blade cartridges longer and get better results from them by having the hair cleared out of them. I can't believe that I didn't include this in my original review. Perhaps, I'll find another use for my Waterpik over time, but this is one of my favorite purchases EVER. I'll buy another when this one breaks. *****UPDATE***** 6/8/2011 About a month ago, I plugged this Waterpik in and it finally broke after 2.5 years. I already miss it (mostly for blasting water from between the blades of my Gillete Mach3, Fusion, and Schick Quattro razors. I plan to buy another Waterpik soon, and I still give it 5-stars despite breaking after a solid 2.5 years of regular usage.

Very effective, include multiple tips and storage for them, has a large reservoir.
I purchased this same model 12 years ago, and used it twice a day. When I had my bathroom remodeled, I didn't want to give up the counter space, and gave it away. BIG MISTAKE!! My dental exams were good and I was using an electric toothbrush. So, what did I need a water flosser for?? At my latest dental exam, I was told I had large pockets behind my gums that were accumulating food and bacteria. They were large enough the hygienist got a tomato seed out of one of them. The hygienist recommended a WaterPik, and told me using one would eventually clean out and shrink the pockets. That night, I checked out Amazon to find a water flosser and found a portable, rechargeable one that had good reviews thinking it wouldn't take much counter space and would do the same job for a lot less money. Again, a big mistake. My first experience with this flosser would have won on America's Funniest Videos if it had been recorded. It had to be turned on to select a mode or speed and the selection buttons couldn't be seen when the tip was in my mouth. When I turned it on, it started shooting out a stream of water that covered the mirror and hit the ceiling before I could turn it off. The second time I used it, I had my thumb on the on button, put it in my mouth, pressed the on button, and almost drilled a hole in my tongue. In pain, I pulled it out of my mouth, sprayed my face and again washed my bathroom mirror before I could turn it off. When I finally got it under control, I had to refill the water reservoir 2-3 times to do a good cleaning. After all this, I decided to buy this WaterPik water flosser, and I love it. - The water reservoir is plenty large to hold enough water to do a good cleaning even when using a couple of the tips, - It includes 5 tips and 1 brush. I still use my electric toothbrush so I don't use the toothbrush that came with this set - All of the tips and the brush are stored in the cover for the water reservoir. - The water pressure can be adjusted before or after the unit is turned on. There is a separate "on" button on the hand tool to turn on the water jets. Turning it on and off while in your mouth is easy. - The hose to the tips coils and easily stores on the base unit. The tips included with this flosser are: 1 - Orthodontic Tip for Braces and General use 2 - Pik Pocket Tip for Periodontal pockets/Furcation - If you have pockets behind your gums, as I do, this tip works well to clean out and reduce the size of the pockets 3 - Plaque Seeker Tip helps to reduce plaque on implants, crowns, bridged, retainers and for general use 4 - Toothbrush Tip is for general use - Since I have an electric toothbrush, I have not yet tried this tip. 5 - Classic Jet Tip is for general use - This is the tip I most often use 6 - Tongue Cleaner helps to freshen breath - I haven't tried this tip yet, but, supposedly, cleaning your tongue helps to freshen your breath as it removes dead skin cells from your tongue. I have not yet tried all of the tips and most often use the Classic Jet tip to floss between my teeth - front and back. I have also been using this tip to clean the pockets, but should probably use the Pik Pocket tip for this. I don't think anyone would use all of these different tips, but will choose the ones that work best for their dental requirements. If you need a compact water flosser that you can travel with or store in a drawer, this one probably wouldn't work for you. If you have space on your bathroom counter and want a flosser that is easy to use, I highly recommend this water flosser. I am now using this flosser twice a day and hopefully, the pockets in my gums will be greatly reduced. I am 75 and, so far, have lost 2 of my chewing molars. I really don't want to lose any more. Chewing is important to healthy digestion, and I don't like any of the alternatives for the loss of teeth. I hope this review was helpful for you. I will update my review if my opinion changes.

Flossing With Braces Just Got Better!
I purchased the Waterpik Ultra Water Flosser mostly because my son and I have braces and flossing has become a nightmare! I read the reviews and thought it was the most sensible alternative (but I admit I purchased it in disbelief). We received it promptly and I have to say it worked. I used it the first time and actually flossed afterwards to see if there was anything left that the Waterpik didn't get...and my teeth were "picked clean". There wasn't a hint of plaque anywhere. I was pleased with its performance and that it met and exceeded my expectations. I should also add that its very much a "plug and play" type machine. There is a little card to tell you how to start it for the first time and after that (which is super simple), it stays simple. No fussing. I do really like the coiled cord the "brush" is on...it slides in easily every single time, no messy wires. That said, there are a few things that I didn't like. 1) Be prepared for a mess! And a big one at that until you learn how to move your lips around the thing. I kept trying to close my mouth (natural reaction to water spraying everywhere) and also tried looking at what I was doing (normally, you look in the mirror when you brush, right?)...what a mistake. This sends water flying every which way. Be prepared to keep your head down close to the sink with your mouth half open with water running out of it (that makes a difference and it says to do this in the directions, but your natural instinct usually is the opposite of this). I have to confess that this is a little uncomfortable for me...but the upside is that you have "flossed" every crevice of your mouth (especially your braces) in a short amount of time. Also if you think your kids are going to pick this up without making an even bigger mess - be warned. My 12 year old son had even managed to inadvertently spray the bathroom window (across the room) and had water all over the counter, etc...everything was wet. Its taken time for him to get better with it, but its a slow process. 2) The directions say you can't use it for more than 5 minutes every 2 hours or it may burn out the motor. Keep in mind that it takes me two minutes to run through a cycle with the machine on its highest setting. But if you have purchased this for your family to use, you can't use it back to back between kids without risking damaging the waterpik altogether. 3) It doesn't whiten your teeth or remove stains. I have a sonicare toothbrush that removes the grit and stains from my teeth. The waterpik removes plaque and food particles. It doesn't really remove the gritty feeling from the back of your teeth that isn't close to the gum line...remember though, we only use the braces attachment and so maybe the other attachments work better. 4) I did try the tongue cleaner...it really seemed like a waste and then you have to change attachments. I know its not a lot of work to change attachments, its just a matter of convenience and ability. Its inconvenient to change the head and it really doesn't seem very useful. 5) I wouldn't recommend this for younger children. I have kids from age 3 up to twelve and I would think that my 10 year old would be okay with this, but not my 8 year old (a little uncoordinated anyway). I don't think it would hurt them, it would just be a mess and you cannot look in their mouth and do it for them like you might if you were trying to brush their teeth for them. Overall, the waterpik did what I wanted it to do - clean around our braces. I would still buy it in a heartbeat all over again because of how quick and efficient it is...but I'll only be using it while we have orthodontics. Hope this helps someone else who has the same troubles flossing as we did. *****UPDATE****** March 15, 2012 Just wanted to let you know that after all this time, we are still using our waterpik. It has served us well. No problems, easy to use...saves your sanity when it comes to flossing:)

Alcohol also "dries" and "Dry Mouth" is something that needs attention and possible treatment. > Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is an ingredient in many personal care products, including soap, shampoo, toothpaste, and mouthwash. It is relatively inexpensive and foams up easily. It is often described as a detergent or degreaser, but it functions primarily as a surfactant, so that oil-based ingredients can combine more easily with water-based ingredients. A secondary function of SLS is to provide the foaming action that makes it feel like something spectacular is happening in your mouth. There is little scientific proof that SLS removes tartar, plaque, or biofilm. > You will likely benefit from seriously considering not using SLS containing products in your mouth. Reduce Visits to the Dentist
I've now had this Waterpik for over a month and here are some of the pros and cons: PROS: 1. Significantly improves periodontal health by massaging gums and removing food debris below the gum line, thereby reducing the risk of gum infection. 2. Oral irrigation and water jet effectively removes more food particles between tight teeth and for those who still have their wisdom teeth than any method of flossing. Flossing can remove much, but requires far more effort and time and may still leave particles remaining. The water pressure can be built up over a short period of continuous several days of use to a setting of 8 or above. Once at this level and continuing to use the Waterpik, the process of getting teeth clean is faster than any method of flossing. 3. Regular use will help in preventing the build up tartar and calculus of the teeth. Some people through their saliva build up tartar on the front 10-12 teeth and the Waterpik does prevent this build up more effectively than any tartar control toothpaste. 4. In each tankful, adding a cap full of regular Listerine, which has about 27% alcohol, keeps the unit clean by preventing possible build up of bacterial growth. It also works as a mild disinfectant for your gums. 5. As the cost of health care in the US is increasing, dental health plan prices are either increasing or becoming secondary due to cost. Using the Waterpik, you can reduce your visit to the dentist to once every two years, provided you don't have other problems, and you won't need much cleaning. Many dental hygienists are abusive on a person's teeth, not deliberately, but they simply can't feel the pain and need to get the tartar build up off. A typical dentist visit is between $50-$75 dollars that includes cleaning and is recommended at least once every 6-12 months. By using the Waterpik regularly you can skip a couple of visits and save $100-$150 which more than covers twice the cost of the unit. 6. The standard tip followed by the orthodontic tip are the most useful. The toothbrush and tongue cleaner tips are not useful. CONS: 1. Construction is of cheap plastic and the unit will last no more that 2 years with regular use provided you don't drop it or have hard water which may clog the pump. 2. Somewhat noisy and if you're wife is talking to you while you're using the unit, you can't hear her. Some may call this a "feature." 3. Don't ever touch the bottom portion of the unit or the black gasket on the unit. You will get bacterial growth on it. 4. Storing water in the unit is bad idea and once finished using, make sure the outer part is relatively dry. 5. Water is everywhere and it takes some learning to keep from spraying everywhere. Don't ever get the spray in your eye as its painful. Overall, its a good unit which is designed well and is effective for its purpose. The price deserves to be closer to $40 rather than $50 based on the flimsy plastic materials.

Beats the heck out of flossing! Still lots of work to do in the future.
I have used this Waterpik Ultra Water Flosser for about a year now. I had great success using this product with Periogen. Due to the high cost of the Periogen, I stopped using it and switched to baking powder and water which has not worked out as well for me. Nonetheless, the Waterpik itself is really quite awesome. Certainly an excellent value for the money and much easier and fun to use than traditional dental floss. I do have a couple of suggestions though for the manufacturer based on my experiences. 1. I would recommend using a capacitive on/off switch rather than the mechanical switch and I would move that switch to the right side of the device. Here is the reason why. Most people, like me, are right handed. We typically will have this product on the right side of our sink. When we initially turn on the device, we will stick the tip in our mouth holding it with our right hand to avoid spraying the bathroom. However, this requires doing a left handed cross over. The physical switch takes some force. In fact, I can push the device sometimes when I flip the switch. If you use your left hand to hold the tip when turning it on, you do a right hand cross and you can cause the device to get pushed to the left or rotated. If you had a capacitive on/off switch, the lightest touch would activate the device without having to worry about physically moving the product. 2. I would recommend adding a re-circulation loop to your device so that the fluid always has a place to move as opposed to being forced into a dead-end when the stop button in depressed. I personally have had issues with the stop button disengaging when using your product. I also don't like the idea of forcing the pump to work against a dead leg. If you had a pressurized loop with a Y, you could divert some of the fluid to the tip and have the rest of the fluid return to the vessel. If you desire to momentarily stop the pump, all flow could be redirected back into the vessel. It might also be useful to investigate using an electronic switch that would kill the pump. Alternatively, by having that easy to flip on/off capacitive switch (as featured on the latest Kohler kitchen faucets) you might be able to just eliminate that physical button all together. If you really wanted to get sophisticated, you might include an electronic switch on the tip handle too. 3. Increase the number of tips you include. I don't like spending extra money on shipping and high mark-up on accessories. Just raise your price and add more tips to the box. Give your customers enough tips to last 5 years. It is little signs of good faith like this that make customers happy. Just do it. 4. Buy out Periogen, more rationally price the Periogen product, and then go mainstream. Make the Waterpik Ultra Water Flosser and Periogen the defacto method of stopping and reversing gingivitis and periodontal disease. Back up every meeting with dentists, oral hygienist, and medical doctors with indisputable scientific evidence that your combined product portfolio is the best product on the market. Fast, easy to use, and effective. Bill Gates had a dream of putting a PC on every desk running his software. Your dream ought to be to have a Waterpik Ultra Water Flossers sitting on every personal bathroom counter in the world and and using a steady supply of Periogen to compliment your great product. Check out my review of Periogen for my criticism of their price gouging. If you can't do a buyout of Periogen, I highly, highly recommend that you start your own R&D division to come up with your own patented formulation for dissolving tartar and washing away harmful gingivitis biofilm. I think this business with the proper R&D and marketing could be a block buster hit. We are learning so much from scientific literature about the dangers that oral bacterial poses to the rest of the body. A Google search led me to WebMD and an article that mentions: "To date, scientists have found associations between periodontal disease and a number of other problems, including: heart disease, diabetes, dementia, rheumatoid arthritis, and premature birth." Waterpik could do so much to help folks with their health. I reference a couple of recent papers that are worth studying in my Periogen review.

My dentist will be very happy!
As with most people, my dentist badgers me about flossing. He will be very happy that I purchased the Waterpik, as I tend to use everyday, if not twice a day. It's extremely easy to use and is more convenient than regular flossing, at least for me. I have a permanent retainer on my bottom teeth, which makes it difficult to floss properly, so I tend to avoid flossing altogether. The Waterpik has made it much easier for me to floss regularly PLUS it has proven to be more effective than regular flossing. The adjustable pressure settings and multiple attachments make it a very good product for both my wife and I to use. I am able to use higher pressure settings, while it has lower settings that will work well for her sensitive teeth. The water tank is easy to fill and empty and the attachments are easy to swap out. The standard attachments work very well, as does the "pik pocket" attachment designed to give your gums a deep cleaning. I have limited use for the orthodontic attachment, but I imagine it would have been nice when I had full braces. The tooth rinse attachment may have its uses for some people, but it seemed to just make a mess all of my counter and mirror. The toothbrush attachment might also be useful for some, but I have an Oral B electric toothbrush, so I won't ever use that one. Among all the benefits to this product, there are few drawbacks. First, it has a fairly large footprint, so it may be difficult if you don't have a lot of counter space in your bathroom. We have a dual vanity, so we have room between the sinks, but not everyone has that luxury. Second, the instructions say to unplug the cord when not in use, but there is no mechanism to store or wrap up the cord, so it just sits there by the plug. This is not ideal, since your hands and/or the plug may be wet when you get ready to use the device. Finally, the handy storage tray that sits on top of the water tank doesn't have enough slots to store all of the attachments that come with the device. Even if you keep one attachment installed on the handle, you are still one slot short. This is not a huge deal for me, as I've determined that there are few attachments that I have no use for, but it may be an issue for some. Overall, these are minor deficiencies that don't really relate to the quality or effectiveness of the product, but I felt they were worth mentioning. None of these would impact my rating or my decision to buy this product again. They are just slightly annoying. I would definitely recommend buying this product, even if you are one of the few people that flosses regularly. It is very easy to use, and is very effective.

WP-100 Waterpik - Not what they used to be...
I'm not sure why they don't refer to this Waterpik with its model number, WP-100. That's what it is. (they've since changed the name from 'professional' to WP-100) I have used Waterpiks over the years, and finally broke down an bought another after years of doing without. As far as their usefulness as a dental device, I think they're great. My dentist doesn't think that highly of them, but after paying him $5000 for dental surgery, maybe he just wants to assure himself of continued business. I don't floss much, and I'm not that dedicated toothbrusher either. So when I use the pik, and there are always some food particles dislodged by it, even after flossing, I figure it must be doing some good. As far as this model goes, it works as expected, but I don'tr find any improvments over the model I had 30 years ago. From the picture it looks bigger. So it has a smaller footprint than I expected, but the reservoir is also quite small. It's just big enough for a cursory cleaning without having to refill it. The pressure is quite a bit lower than older models. I don't know if there is a legitmate reason for having a lower pressure, or if it's a matter manufacturing costs. I'd like a stronger jet for my preferences. The hose that connects the handle is way too short. You really need to keep the unit right next to the edge of the sink, and bend over. Again, I find no reason to do this except cost savings. Now it comes with several tips (30 years ago, there was only one flavor). Tounge cleaner, pick pocket, orthodontic tip, and plain vanilla. I can't say that any of the new designs adds anything to the operation. I hardly would call this unit 'professional'. It feels like it will have a limited life, and is hardly what I would call robust. I think a more apt description would be 'Compact Basic'. update 12/2/2006: Older WaterPiks used to have pressure fit tips (and worked fine). This has a button on the handle to release the tip, and it is located right where your thumb would be when holding it. The tip is constantly popping out because of this design flaw. With the short hose, 16oz capacity, weak pressure, my disappointment with this unit is only growing. I wish I could find a 25 year old model which had none of these problems. update 01/10/2007 - If I could, I'd reduce my rating of this unit to 1 star. The designers must have been on vacation when they released this thing. The handle has a knurled collar, which you'd think could be used to rotate the tip, but it doesn't. The tips are not keyed, so they won't necessarily turn when you rotate the collar. As I said, the release button for the tips is in a place where it's easy to press inadvertently. You can't turn the unit off and on with one hand due to its light weight. The hose is too short. The reservoir cover holds the extra tips, and is not convenient, nor do I trust it to keep the reservoir protected from ambient germs or bacteria. I really wish I could find one of the old models, which had none of these problems, so I could toss this one in the trash. Don't waste the extra money on this one, or if you have a old broken one, get it repaired instead of buying this thing.

Item supplies is not compatible to Power supply in UAE
Item received. However when switching it on, it made a terrible noise. Upon investigation I discovered that the item that was delivered to me runs on 110V 60hZ power supply which is not compatible to Power rating in UAE (240V 50hZ) What is most disappointing is that the seller refuses replacement or refund.
