You can trust 3M Aquapure products. Definitely commercial grade that can be used for residential!
We have several different 3M Aquapure products in our home and this AP431 whole house scale reducer is one of them. Initially you need to buy the kit as it comes with the special "T" fitting. Afterwards you can just buy the cartridges itself periodically. Side note, it's not a bad idea to stock up on these as the prices have gone up significantly since we started buying these about right (8) or so years ago. We got it primarily to protect our appliances such as our tankless water heater, shower heads, kitchen faucet and washer. So far we have zero issues to date! What also might be helping is our whole house water filtration system which takes care of sediment, rust, etc. at the source. Please see my attached photos of the cartridge as well as installed photo. **Last pro-tip** - since the cartridge threads are plastic, it's very easy to cross-thread the cartridge and chew up the threads. An old trick I learned for any screw fitting is to reverse it in first (left-loosey) until you feel the first thread "seat". This trick always ensures you engage the female threads for a perfect, trouble-free install!

Really Works
3M continues to impress me. Pretty much the deciding factor to even try this thing was that 3M has their name on it. All of the great reviews factored as well. I have stupid-hard water where I live. It gets into everything. Didn't want to commit to a big salt system. This system works great. After one-month, scale is actually almost gone on my shower heads and fixtures (it has been there forever). Water feels better. I have a 3 bathroom house with five active adults living in it and hot water recirc system (the water heater (tank) is located in the garage detached from the main house). Fingers crossed that this will last the recommended six months. The one suggestion I have is to include a shut off valve just ahead of the cartridge . If the filter housing gets punctured, the hot water side has to be turned off until a replacement cartridge is installed.

Good filter
A contractor installed a Rheem tankless hot water heater in my house. I love it. When I called a plumber to service/flush it out 3 years after the initial installation, he advised me to get this filter which I did & he installed. Now it seems I can go every 5-6 years between service/flushings. And we have pretty good water in my area of NorCal.

I have used this for 4 months, and it appears to be doing a good job.
I have used this 4 months now, and replaced the cartridge after 3 months. Cartridge changeout is very easy as long as shutoff valves are closed at both the inflow and outflow sides. My reason for installing this was to prevent scale buildup in my new tankless hot water heater which would shorten the lifespan of the expensive heater. Since it is installed as a whole-house unit, this cartridge system should also help prevent scale buildup in the showerhead, and in our coffee maker. So far it appears to be doing a good job, and to ensure it is always functioning optimally I will change the cartridge every 3 months.

Prolonging Tankless Water Heater Life
I have been using these for a couple of years now. I added this inline before my tankless water heater, to protect it from scale. I have definitely noticed that since adding the filter it has eliminated hard water build-up on my faucets and shower heads. I set an alarm on my phone to change it every six months, and have one auto delivered from Amazon "Subscribe & Save".

Reduced scale buildup in our new tankless water heater
We had this unit installed by a plumber as a part of a tankless water heater install. I failed to flush the heater at the one year mark due to health issues but did at 2 years. We have very hard water and my expectations were for a significant scale to show up during the flush but actually had very little. We use this downstream from our water softener unit due to our water hardness. I did note that the new cartridge was EXTREMELY difficult to NOT cross thread during installation. Take your time and be very careful. A method I use for this type of situation is to place the threaded piece into the socket and gently rotate it counter clockwise until I can feel the the first thread "click" slightly as it passes the first thread then start threading into the socket in a clockwise manner. Carefully observe that the cartridge is going in straight and threading in EASILY. The easy threading is critical. The threads on the plastic cartridge don't form the seal, the o-ring does. If the threads bind at all you are likely starting to cross thread. If that happens back out and try again. It took me 3 tries to get the cartridge to thread easily because the way we have ours mounted its at about waist level to me. By getting a lower view and being level with the socket I was able to easily tell when the threaded portion was not going in straight.

Clogged hot water pipes?
One of the best scale reducers on the market. Can not beat the price on line. Almost 1/2 what a plumber or furnace repair guy would charge you. Basically it prevents scale (chemical coating) from forming in your hot water heating system. Unless you want to pay a couple of hundred dollars to have your hot water heating system flushed with acid. A typical cartridge will last almost a year (comes with a life indicator), and best; once the hardware is installed... you can change it your self or have the burner service guy change it when he does the annual burner service.... So do not buy just one, buy two and buy two again when the last one is installed. Who doesn't want to get a few more years out of your hot water system.
