I don't write a lot of reviews, but this one impressed me.
I purchased this for my wife's birthday, she loves it and is excited to start using it. This unit is better in real life than in the Amazon photos. It is unusually well made, from solid wood - oak I believe (not mentioned on the Amazon page). It has been well-finished in a light clear coat, soft wood edges, tongue and groove solid wood construction, brass hardware, easy adjust knobs for all height adjustments. Features: It has a wide range of adjustment for height, including the adjustable tray height. That is, a ratcheting latch under the tray allows raising the tray height way up, like head-height. As you can see in the photos, it grabs the canvas at the top with a bracket which has a depth of 2" hold (canvas depth) and the bottom base tray has a depth of 1-5/8". I measured one of my wife's canvases, it was 1-1/2" thick, making it a nice fit. This unit extends to accommodate an unusually large size frame. I inserted a 48"x60" canvas, which had no problem fitting the height (portrait orientation). The Amazon page says an upper size limit of 139" which sounds about right. The locking wheels make it easy lock into a position and easy to move even with a large canvas. I noticed the canvas had wood supports on the back with the exact same width as the vertical supports on the easel. I doubt that's a coincidence. It's sturdy, with long screws, thick solid wood, even solid wood reinforcement blocks at the base (see left and right side of base) to keep it from racking right and left. Assembly: Ignore the 1-star reviews claiming no instructions, those reviews are outdated, apparently. The instructions were included. The instructions were easy to follow, with an illustration of each step showing detailed hardware (see the instructions sheet in the background of the screwdriver photo). They were a bit on the small side, I had to magnify it to see some of the assembly detail. Each step's illustration has letters for every piece of wood and every piece of associated hardware. A nice set of screwdrivers (see third photo) were included, much nicer than anything I've ever seen included before in ready-to-assemble furniture item. It also comes with an Allen wrench (hex key) which is only needed for 4 bolts. Assembly Time: The only negative was the time it took to assemble, about an hour for me, and I used a power screwdriver for about 1/2 the screws. Note: don't use a power screwdriver on the brass screws, it will strip the heads. But, considering the number of parts, that assembly time wasn't bad. It beats making one from scratch. As a former woodworker, I can attest to the time and cost for building this from scratch, about 3 days and materials alone would have cost over $100.

If you're ready for a big studio easel, I recommend this one highly for the price.
This is a beautifully made and carefully packaged easel. It's big and heavy and super easy to adjust. The instruction drawings were clear and easy to follow--the only mistake I made was not identifying the location of an important bolt hole in step 2. I'm thrilled with the quality of this easel. Unfortunately, my ceilings are only 7'6" so I'm having to cut the center posts shorter to be able to adjust to the height range I want, but it'll still go way higher than I'll need. It's way worth it for the ease of adjustment. Price is great for the size, sturdiness, and good design. Having it on locking wheels is great! I look forward to playing with the horizontal adjustment as well.

A great, medium sized studio easel.
I needed a new medium-sized easel for my studio, and gave this a try. It is perfect for my needs. It is sturdy, versatile, and great looking. It is adjustable for different plane angles, and has a fairly sturdy top clamp that extends very high for large canvases. It's a bit of a project to assemble it. I did it by myself and it took about an hour. You need to assemble it in a large room where you can spread out the parts. The assembly instructions are not too difficult to decipher, but there are a couple of assembly steps that are a bit tricky. I had to go back and redo a couple steps once I figured out that I had messed them up the first time. But it was fairly easy to do this. Overall, a great easel for anyone who does a lot of artwork in many mediums. It is particularly good for drawing and oil painting. If you are planning to use an easel for watercolor painting, I would not recommend this model. It is relatively easy to adjust this easel in spite of how large it is, but when I am working in watercolors, I tend to make position and angle adjustments a lot, and this easel is almost too sturdy for such rapid adjustments.

High Quality, heavy duty
The Easel went together easily and quickly. I used a cordless drill with a 4" long Phillips bit for most of it. Instructions were a little small and would be hard to read if you have bad eyes, but it went together easy enough. The wood is high quality and HEAVY. Description says it is Beach. The density reminds me of Oak. very high quality. I got everything assembled in about 30 min. LOTS of adjustability. My daughter needed and upgrade from her flimsy little $15 easal. She absolutely loves this one. wheels allow her to move it around easy. I needed to take the sliding part off so I could carry it up the stairs in 2 pieces. I would buy it again and recommend it to others. This thing will last her the rest of her life.

A good value, but terrible instructions
8/30/2020 - Review Updated to 5 stars After 3 years of moderate use, and one move to another city, the easel is still in good condition. As mentioned in my first review, I made sure not to abuse it, and apart from having to periodically re-tighten the screws at the base, I have not had any issues with it. For the price, I have definitely got my money’s worth. ———————————————- Initial Review (2017-08-02) Pros: price, features Cons: instructions are hard to read I had been researching convertible H frame easels for a long time and decided to go with this one because of the price. ($189 at time of purchase). The wooden pieces are labeled with small numbered stickers, and the screws and hardware are conveniently separated into small baggies with letters. Assembly was not difficult, but as others said, the instructions were not ideal. Make sure you look closely at the diagrams and the orientation of the parts. The diagrams are small which was frustrating. I had to reassemble a couple of pieces that we're facing the wrong direction. The wood is definitely not particle board, and I'm happy with the quality of the components. One review mentioned the easel could take a good beating, but I'm not sure about that. It is sturdy, but if this were in a classroom setting and out for public use, I do not believe this easel would last more than a year. On the other hand, I will be babying it to make sure I can get the most for my money, so I'm satisfied with the quality. One thing that might be a problem are the casters. Some of the holes for the screws were just a fraction too big and the screw started spinning once it was down. I decided to put some super glue in the holes for the screws and then screw them down again If they don't last long, I'll swap out the casters for some that are more robust. For now they work great. Overall I would recommend this product. For the price, features, and size of canvas that it can accommodate, this is a great entry-level easel.

Better quality than expected, easy assembly
I don’t write a lot of reviews but felt this item deserved some kind words. First, the quality of the word, finish, design, sturdiness and general usefulness of this easel would be hard to beat. It’s an excellent product and you will not be disappointed. The main purpose of this review is to address assembly and my experience. Some of the reviews here rate this item as difficult to assemble. Difficulty reading the I structiibs, missing parts, and poorly drilled holes are complaints mentioned in a few reviews. My experience was very different. The easel parts arrived in a long box probably 60” x 6”x6” ish. Inside all the parts were bagged and tagged. Wooden parts labeled with numbers. Bolts, screws, wheels, clips, etc were all bagged individually and labeled with letters. The instructions go set by step, about seven steps to completion. I found the instructions very easy to follow with the required parts well labeled. This is my first easel. I have never put one together and no one would describe me as handy when it comes to such things. It took me about 30-45 minutes to assemble. I took my time and was watching a soccer game as I assembled (go USWNT!). Everything fit together as expected. I hate when you have to force things to fit or when holes don’t align they way they are supposed to. I had neither of those experiences. Everything fit together as expected with zero forcing going on. I did not find any part of the assembly frustrating. This is rare for me. I also want to mention that you need no tools of your own to assemble this. It ships with very nice flathead and phillips screwdrivers and a hex wrench. The screwdrivers are nicer than my current ones. I am very happy with this purchase.

Worth it! Same quality, size and function as the $400 one I almost bought!
I received my easel sooner than I thought! Ordered on Friday, received it on Monday on regular delivery wow! I immediately opened the box and layed out all the pieces on the floor while checking on the instruction sheet, making sure all pieces were there. The instructions are very clear, match numbers to letters, very much like you would assemble any IKEA product. I am a 49 year old woman and I did it all by myself with very little problem. Though it would be better to have someone else for stability while holding the heavier pieces and screwing them together. At first, I didn’t understand the 1st screws I had to insert. They come with a small bolt, and I didn’t quite understand how it would be used. But I figured it out after 3 minutes, smh! I included some pics to show how you drop the bolt in the larger hole, making sure all holes match in same direction, and then the screw goes through the smaller hole on the other side. Btw, the easel came with the two screwdrivers you will need! So you’ll really have everything you need to build your easel in about an hour or less! I’m so happy with it. No damage, very sturdy, easy to tilt. I was about to spend twice as much on another site for a very similar one in size and function and thank God I found this one. It’s worth every dollar!

One of the best assemble it yourself products I've ever purchased.
A beautiful product that exceeds expectations by a lot! Great, Solid packaging. Every pair of parts was individually wrapped in a fabric sleeve, clearly marked with an easily removable sticker. Every hardware package was clearly marked and complete. The wood was flawless in both wood and finish! The hardware was among the best of any I have had. Its instructions were simple and clear, the order of events was precise and completed in about 30 minutes. The fit and finish are well above the price point of this easel and it really wowed me. You know when it works as well as the promise? This exceeded expectations in every way without any flaw on the wood, hardware or assembly! The only thing I would say is that the included screwdrivers were almost useless. Simply dont include them if they are that cheap. Realistically you are going to likely use a power driver anyway. Kudos to US Art Supply. I am not easily impressed, and this certainly did. We'll update after Its in use, but its solid vertical, super solid horizontal, and looks great!

Shipping was ok as I never received a tracking number and just showed up on my doorstep. But I was really impressed with the quality of this easel. It’s solid wood. The instructions were very easy to follow and well organized and they included quality tools for assembling. This easel will last me a very long time
