This hasn't even once been an issue for us, because I set the guides for an 8 1/2" sheet of paper once, and then taped them in place (on the underside) with scotch tape...and they haven't moved in 2 1/2 years. Still the original pieces of tape, even...see the picture attached to this review for where I taped on the underside of the punch. Bottom line: this is a totally solid, well-made two-hole punch. I strongly recommend it with one reservation: *IF* you will be needing to move the guides to fit different size paper, then you will obviously not be able to use the scotch tape trick to prevent them from moving. In that case, I'd recommend against purchasing this punch, because it will probably be very frustrating for you.
