Both 5 and 2% have strengths
This is my review of effectiveness of Rogaine, and also discussion of 5% Foam vs Generic 2% solution. I’ve done some in-depth research in addition to using both myself. First, both products do work, and actually they work equally well. Don’t think that the 5% works better simply because it is stronger. Think about foamy mousse hair product — if you let it become a liquid, there is really very little liquid there. For the 2%, you’re using liquid so you get much more product per use, and you’re using it twice a day, so the actual amount of minoxidil you absorb is probably about the same. A downside for both, as others have said, is that you will have to use minoxidil forever if you want to keep the hair. Hair, like skin, is always turning over - even in young people, hair constantly falls out and grows back. Expecting new hair growth to stay forever without help would be like expecting your self-tanner to keep your skin dark without reapplying. It’s just not going to happen. I figure I will use Rogaine for about 10 years and then switch to wearing wigs, which is what my bald mom does. Both are cheaper than hair transplants. OK so now for the other pros and cons of each formula. Keep in mind I have fairly fine, straight hair, so if you have course or curly hair you may not have the same experience. APPLICATION: Both products have a little learning curve in figuring out how to apply. Personally I think the 2% liquid is easier, as you can use the application dropper to part hair and apply at the same time. The liquid is also easier to measure. However, it is easy for it to run into your face or ears, and then you have to wash it off quickly. The foam is much more controllable and there is probably less waste. ROUTINE: I only wash my hair every other day, and I still do. Both of these products leave a bit of “product buildup” at the roots of the hair, so I can’t really go longer than every two days. However, in a pinch, I have used dry shampoo after the Rogaine had time to dry, just to fluff up any areas that were feeling a little greasy. Also, you need time after a shower to dry your scalp (I blow dry my hair, so no problem there), then apply the Rogaine, THEN let that dry before you apply more styling product. I have quit using product during the blow dry process. I dry, use the Rogaine, blow dry a little more, put on makeup and get dressed, then finish styling my hair last. STYLING: The foam wins hands down in the styling area. You’re putting it where your hair is thinner, so it gives a little volume. If you have fine hair, though, you know that any mousse or liquid styling product tends to flatten or weigh it down. My advice is NOT to put foam directly on your part first as the package directs. Pick up a little line of hair on either side of your part and put it UNDER, fan or blow it dry, and let it back down. If you are thin on the sides, like me, start at the thin spot closest to your ears and work up to the part last. Be very sparing with each finger full of foam, as you want it mostly on your scalp, not in your hair. It’s not a great styling product, but I generally use it, let it dry, then try to keep my other styling products about an inch out from the scalp, on the hair itself. On the “non-wash” days, I apply Rogaine foam, fluff the hair by blow drying the wrong direction, wait a few, then use a spray volumizer and dry or curl again. However, if I’m using the 2% liquid, I can apply, then use a blow dryer to blow the hair in the wrong direction and fluff it up, so kind of the same difference. SIDE EFFECTS: In studies, the 5% foam is about half as likely to cause itching than the 2% liquid. Only 1 in 20 women report increased dandruff with the foam, compared to about 1 in 5 for the liquid. I do feel some “tingles” with both, but nothing unpleasant. I have not noticed any dandruff but my scalp definitely feels a little more oily. TRAVELING: Technically, over the counter medications are exempt from TSA rules, so the 2.11 oz foam aerosol can should be OK. However, I really don’t want to argue in public about TSA rules concerning my hair regrowth product. And, if I lose the argument, I don’t want to take the chance of losing a $20+ item. So, I only take 2% liquid in a 2 oz bottle when I travel. Overall, I like the foam better for daily ease of styling and the look of my hair after using it. However, I do use the liquid when I’m in a hurry or when traveling for reasons listed above.

Fixed my insecurity!! :)
I have been using for about 45 days morning & night after hormones caused me to have light hair loss and thinning around my hairline. I felt insecure tying back my hair. As women, hair is a huge part of our identity. I see new growth popping up and I feel my hair is overall thicker. I no longer have sparse spots showing when my hair is up! I know- I will have to use this product forever, but honestly its a great price and truly beats the nuisance of wigs or expense of hair transplant. Great product! I try to use after a hot shower where my pores are open, and massage my hairline after applying. Then I brush hairline with a softbrush to stimulate the hair follicles.

Really works but dries out my scalp
I am a female in my 40s. I felt my hair was starting to thin, which scared me because my mother has very thin hair. So, I used Amazon's 2% minoxidil for about a year. It's cheaper for me than brand and other generics due to the Subscribe N Save bundling discount. Minoxidil dries out my scalp a little and makes it slightly itchy (and I have oily hair). It isn't significant, but given the cost and the fact that I didn't think my hair was any thicker than it had been, I stopped using the product. Boy, was I wrong about this stuff "not" working. I stopped using the product about 2 months ago and the amount of hair fall I've had has been staggering. The amount of hair in my hair brush each day and coming out when I shower makes me feel like I'm going to go bald. I haven't had surgery, had a baby, changed my nutritional intake or done anything else that you would expect to make a person shed so much hair! The only change to which I can attribute this significant new hair loss is stopping the minoxidil. So, now I am convinced it works and I have re-started my use of the product. Based on the amount of hair I am losing, the product actually was really preserving a lot of my hair. It really, really works!!

It's works
You have to be patient It really does work & You have to be committed to applying every day & night . I used a spray bottle . Because it's run fast along your face . I had to stop using the 5 percent for men I honestly see why ( you will have wanted hair 5 percent had me growing facial hair fast!! & When I use neet for removal, it still growing back ! Ladies I know some of us want faster results, but stay away from 5 percent! Unless you want hair growth on your face! Now back to the 2 percent It took me a long time to give a review on this product Because it's took a long time to see results , I thought I had Alopecia . Took years for my hair to show growth! I tried just about everything . So many products & Every body hair not the same . I did so many research online . I read about Minoxidil , cause honestly I'm on on a budget , I was like I don't have nothing to loose anyway so why not give a try I started seeing results I would say about 4 or 5 months, which I long for me. Some days looked as it was getting worse on some days so I wanted to give up again! I tell you this was so stressful!! I started taking biotin & vitamin b-12 along with using Minoxidil for faster results . I still have a long way to go But I honestly came a very long way . From bald spot in the crown of my head bald & edges . I'm black American I stop putting all kinds of chemicals in my hair , weave , hair glue . I also stop shampooing my hair every day. I condition my hair only now with biotin collagen & use a tangle free brush that I bought on here ( stop pulling your hair while wet , it cause much damage! ( Brushing is best) this Minoxidil is a cheap brand , but it's good & works . you have to be patient . I going to update & upload a picture soon. I'm not looking for the long look , but for the fill in growth . I was using "Her Minoxidil but they work the same price just different . Why spend more when they both work the same way . Once again it taking my hair a long time to grow full , but I can see a HUGE difference! Thanks I recommend this!

Thicker hair in just a few months!
This product definitely works; first photo was May 2025, second photo January 2026. My only complaint is the recent scalp itch so switching to the foam. Overall very happy. On a side note: be prepared for significant hair fallout when you first start using, this is normal!

Seams O.K., for the price, nothing to compare it to since I can't afford the expensive stuff
Runs down you cheeck or forehead sometimes. Hope my unibrow doesn't grow back. Update:. No one tells you that if you use monoxidil it speeds up your regular hairs life cycle, causing it to fall out sooner at the end. The way it works is you get three to four months of growth and then falls out, so forget about long hair. I was using it in the corners/edges of my hairline, and the widows peak that appeared to be receding. About 50% of my normal hair that overlapped fell out last week, a year of growing to end up clogging the shower drain over a period of a few days. Also about 25% of where I believe it made contact with my scalp while brushing and combing after application. My hair is obviously thinner and flatter now. It will take a year to grow back after the formula is out of my scalp, three to four months after last use. I started using it mid May 2021 it is now August 5, so about Three months to notice this side effect. This is what I read after doing a Google search and going into about 6 pages of results. Also, this product is required for life to maintain regrown hair, same with propecia pills that have all sorts of side effects. It would be great perhaps, if you want short hair for the rest of your life, and have nearly bald patches, but I do not, it made my receding hairline worse. Leaves a funny taste in my mouth also. So if your just trying to spot apply do not use, beware unless you want short hair, some people I imagine would be happy with any hair and not bald. Another update: the first photo was taken in early July. The second photo was taken in September. It is far less full.

Brought back my hair after 20 years of thinning. Updated to reflect defective product I received.
My original 5-star review: When I turned 40 my hair began to slowly thin all over the top, including the hairline above my forehead and around my temples. The general all-over thinning worsened at full menopause, until by age 60 the part in my hair was almost 1/2 inch wide. I thought it was too late for me to reverse the damage, but tried this product anyway. NOW I HAVE MY HAIR BACK. ALL OF IT!! After 3 months of using this 2% Minoxidil I could see new 1/2-inch long hairs everywhere I applied it. After 6 months of use all that new hair is now about 3 inches long. Now my hair is as thick as it ever was in my youth, and my part is a nice, thin line as it should be. I look 10 years younger than I did before trying this product. There is no "pattern baldness" among the women in my family. I'm very pleased that I tried this anyway, and that I ignored the directions to put this only on the crown of my head. Instead I applied it everywhere my hair was thinning, with thrilling results. Review updated May 26, 2020 due to defective or counterfeit shipment. I had been using this brand of Minoxidil for almost year with excellent results and I love the product. However, I believe that the new shipment I received on March 25, 2020 was either damaged (by freezing in transit?), defective or counterfeit. I began using the first bottle of this shipment at the end of April. Within a week my hair began to fall out in handfuls. I continued to use the Basic Care Minoxidil for several more weeks, assuming the cause of the hair loss was something else. But after 3 weeks I had lost most of the lovely new hair I gained during the previous year. I came to suspect that the Minoxidil was defective since I could find no other explanation. So I switched to another brand last week. The hair loss slowed within 48 hours, and after a week of using the new brand it has stopped. I believe this confirms there was something wrong with the shipment of Basic Care Minoxidil 2% Topical Solution I received in March. The Lot number and Expiration of the two 3-months-supply box I received are NOT shown on the outside of the boxes. But each bottle within the boxes is marked as Lot 0AV2041, Expiration 10/2021. Has anyone else had this problem? I loved this brand and would like to return to it, but now I'm scared to get another bad or counterfeit batch. The product is non-returnable, but since I had purchased from Amazon (rather than a third-party seller), Amazon has said they will refund me the purchase price. Way to go, Amazon!!

for men or women, budget friendly, quality minoxidil. Part of my daily routine forever
Totally fine. I would often buy the Equate version, and buy a a couple boxes at a time (6 months supply). I find that I rarely get out to the store, and the store I would go to rarely has it in stock. They have the mens, but not the womens. Sometimes I buy the mens (5%) and then mix it with the womens (2%) for a stronger dose and to make it last if I can't find the womens. So I am pleased to find it here in the Amazon Basic Care brand. Same price, same quality. I will purchase again. If you are used to using minoxidil type product, then this works the same. One dropper 2x a day.. forever. If you are new to it, then just know that this is a commitment, forever. It takes some time to see anything happen (commit to at least 4-6months), and if you like it then simply plan to use it.. forever. If you stop, you will backslide any gains. Once you get used to using it daily (2x) then it just becomes habit. There are days I just use it once, with no issue, but I do aim for 2x. I also like to use DHT blocker supplements. My hair shed cycles are more frequent and last longer, so I am trying to reduce the frequency of cycles and the length of time. The 2 pronged appoach helps. Trust me that it is a day in and day out thing.. consistency is key. It DOES NOT make hair greasy. It is doesn't really do anything in terms of making it dry, or greasy, or wet. Just apply to scalp. Since it is liquid, I just run the dropper through my hair AT MY SCALP. I massage it in as I go so it won't run down my head or face. I have thick-ish (nearly nothing compared to years prior), and very long hair (I dont have problem growing hair, I have problem KEEPING hair), so I would know if it was a greasy. or Looked wet after. It does not infringe on the overall look of my hair after use. If it is getting all over your hair, then you are simply applying it wrong, or too much in one spot. It needs to be applied on the scalp. Even so, I can apply quite a bit near my temples where there is hair but clearly not much of it, and can rub it all in haphazardly, and my hair does not look wet or greasy. As others have said, men can use womens and women can use mens. I have no idea why they are branded (and priced, and colored) differently. Use whichever percentage is best for you. If 5% (mens) is too much, reduce to 2% (womens), or mix together. Or some days use one, some days use the other.
