So so.
I am very impressed with this rod. It is a great deal at twice the price. The reel is okay. It's an entry level spinning reel and came strung with 20 or 25 lb. test mono. I used it to pier fish and landed a 28 lb. shark among other fish. I am a native Floridian and have fished my entire life. I have relocated to Georgia and had to change my fishing style due to lack of boat access. This pole was exactly what I was looking for. It is stiff enough to rough the fish away from the pilings and long enough to afford long casting. I really wish it was available in a conventional Bait Casting configuration, but you can't go wrong with this one. With heavy use the reel should last me about a year with propper maintenance which is cool considering that I expected to chuck it immediately and replace it with one of my top top quality reels. That should give you an idea of how impressed that I actually am. For the occasional or vacation fisherman This is the perfect combo for surf or pier fishing.**Update**I caught a 4ft. Blacktip off of Tybee Island Pier. I really had a hard time with it. The problem was the rod weight and diameter along with the action, (stiffnes). The configuration of this rod makes it really hard to contol. I have to lower my initial rating.

Bang for the buck
So immediately I took this baby apart to see what was under the hood. Mostly plastic, which is great because that means less things to get rusty from the salty ocean. The clip to hold the reverse switch kinda just plopped out after I added like a half a pound of petroleum, spent about an hour fishing(ha) it out of the deep confines of gears and jelly. Was able to put back together once I got the clip back with tweezers. I don't think the manufacturer wanted customers to tinker with the insides. But once j greased her up and rigged it up I slapped it on this fatty pile. It made me feel like uncle Riko because I'm pretty sure my cast went at least 12 nautical miles. Super rad for my first surf setup.

It has many break-even points
It’s a nice inexpensive surf rod and reel combo, but that won’t necessarily make it tons of fun for the person who is new to surf fishing. Spend 3-4 times more $$$ for a better setup, and you’ll be happier in the long-term. Also, the combo is rather durable with minimal maintenance. I occasionally lubricate the reel, but sometimes forego rinsing off the dried salt and sand for a few days; however, it still functions flawlessly and looks almost new. The rod is tough as nails, not a mar on it after many uses, but it is quite stiff, which negates that fun factor. Sometimes, this combo will be on a “best of” list for surf rods - don’t believe all of what you read in reviews of this combo. Reviewers tend to embellish its strengths, then link to Amazon. Perhaps, the best-of lists bloggers never spent time using it in the surf. I would only recommend this setup for those who will go surf fishing once in a while. It’s to tiresome to use for anything but bottom rigs.

Just pay a little extra for a better quality surf rod.
Its not a very good rod and reel.I bought the 10' and 15' versions of these rods. The 10' came with the spinning reel, but it broke after the first use.The 15' rod came in a three pieces, with the third bottom piece seriously discolored. These rods are way too heavy for 40lb line rods. The 15' is uncomfortable and terrible to cast with. Using a pendelum swing, it casts no further than a 10' rod. I just look like a douche with a giant rod at the beach. To reel it in, you would need a fighting belt to hold the giant rod. This leads to another major problem with these rods. These rods are way too thick. It doesn't fit in a fighting belt gimbal or a sand spike rod holder. I have heavy 3" schedule 40 pvc rod holders, which cannot accommodate these fat fishing rods. This thing has no "action" sensitivity. It's like fishing with a broom stick. The build quality is very poor, but the reel that came in the combo is worse. The reel seized up the fist day I used it. As I was casting beyond the surf, an oncoming sanbar wave wet my reel. I guess the water and sand penetrated the gears, because it seized up. I tried repairing it at home, but it wasn't worth it. The components are too cheap and cannot be put back together. The rods are pretty trashed. I tried taking good care of these rods, since I like keeping my things organized, but the line guides started falling off for no reason. One day, I just noticed that a line guide on each rod was missing.I suggest paying more for a quality surf rod. Compared to other surf rods like a Penn Prevail 11' rod, these rods are trash. Other surf rods are very slim, but these oversized rods are too cumbersome.Basically it is more expensive to buy these cheap rods than to buy a quality one in the first place. In the long run, these rods won't be productive fishing tools. The whole point of fishing is to enjoy yourself and be efficient at catching fish. These rods inhibit any fishing productivity or enjoyment.

Great Beginner Combo for Big Game Surf Fishing
Caught a 42" ~30lb. red drum in the NC surf, and the Okuma Tundra performed beautifully - the 10' model. In fact the rod barely bent. Only weak point was the drag on the reel. When that fish took off, the best you could do was slow it down a bit. Muscling a fish that big was tough, though for the price, I couldn't think of a better combo to do it with. Okuma has definitely upped the game on entry-level gear.A general note on inexpensive rods this size: if you don't mind voiding a warranty, replace the rod tip with a 1-piece stainless steel (no insert) tip, or a tip with a metal insert. These can cost between $3-$15. The insert on the factory tip disintegrated after I accidentally reeled a big barrel swivel into it in the dark, and the remaining metal edge frayed my line before I noticed.
