We decided to fix it ourselves as Apple wants at least $150 to do the job. I ordered the drive here on Amazon. The first unit I got was definitely used-it had scratches on the case. I installed it anyway and sure enough it was DOA.I returned it to the seller, ordered another from a different Amazon seller (PC Mart) and got a nice brand new unit. I installed it and it worked perfectly. Note: you have to re-boot the computer to get it to recognize the drive the first time.A couple of installation notes to help if you might be thinking of doing a self repair. You will need a #00 Phillips screwdriver. The screws on the Mac are tiny, easy to strip and lose so be careful. I watched a few Youtube videos on how to do the project several times to familiarize myself with the process. Ifixit.com also has detailed instructions with pictures. You have to disconnect the cables from both the hard drive and the DVD drive on the logic board. When reinstalling, press down gently but firmly to reseat them.It's not that hard, you just have to work slowly and carefully. Be careful when replacing the screws on the drive and case to not overtighten them.Next up: replacing her 5400 rpm mechanical drive with a blazing fast Samsung SSD. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ So far so good! *by J***N on Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2013* I have an older Macbook (late 2008 Macbook 13" unibody) and I was trying to install Snow Leopard then to Lion, but meh my optical drive went out before I could get a chance.
