Black teas are easy; you just bring it to the boiling point. Oolong, green, and white teas, however, need hot water below the boiling point. I've used typical meat thermometers, but it doesn't work because they have such short probes. You have to use tongs to stick the thermometer into the kettle (electric or otherwise), or you get your hands burnt by the steam.I thought about getting an electric kettle with a thermometer built in, but it's so darn expensive that I couldn't justify the cost. So, I looked into getting a thermometer with a long probe, which is much cheaper. This one is perfect. It's a little longer than it has to be to fit into the kettle, but that's fine. I fill the kettle and stick in the thermometer, then wait till the water is steaming and turn the thermometer on. The temperature displays immediately, and I turn off the kettle when the target temperature is reached (in the case of white tea, 185 F). Sometimes I forget to turn the thermometer off, but that's fine because it automatically shuts off so the battery power isn't wasted.On the whole, I'm satisfied with the thermometer, at least for my limited purposes. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ It's accurate and has a nice sleek design *by A***Y on April 4, 2016* As far as functionality, this works just as described. It's accurate and has a nice sleek design. The only down side is I purchased the triangle arm that was listed as "typically purchased together" but the hole in the arm was too small for the rod on the thermometer to fit in so I'm not sure why these two items are purchased together if you can't actually use them together. That was my only complaint. Shipping was ok, we live in Alaska so shipping is usually a bit longer. ### ⭐ Broke in 6 weeks for no reason *by K***N on February 22, 2016* This thermometer worked great, until it completely broke. I turned it on and everything on the screen is flashing, none of the buttons work, and I definitely can't get a reading. We have not left it in the oven, so it definitely didn't exceed 572 degrees, we hand-washed only the metal probe to make sure that it didn't get water in the electronics, and we stored it in the provided case. We only got 6 weeks of use (2 weeks beyond the return period, of course).
