The width being 36 inches?** A: From the ad, it looks like this one is 48 inches wide, so the length must be roughly 16 inches. They used to make it in a larger size, about 70 inches wide as I recall, and roughly 2 feet long. I've never flown the smaller one; the larger one flies well with the provided streamers, but is unstable without them. **Q: Would this work as windsock hanging from flagpole on aft of a boat?** A: It's a beautiful kite and flies well, although with a tendency to be unstable; more stable with the provided wing-tip streamers. You could fly it from a boat, but it's unstable enough to probably go for a swim rather frequently unless the boat was just sitting in one place with a good, steady breeze of 5 to 10 knots. Use as a wind sock? I doubt it, but it may depend on how fast you were moving relative to the wind. You could always try one out. You could tie the nose and tail bridle lines to two points on the flag pole. Or experiment with hooking up towing lines all along the leading edge of the wing. I think it would be hard to keep steady in a position that told you which way the wind was blowing. I think it would probably hang down upside down or on edge from a flag pole when the boat was docked. When underway, if you added streamers to the tail it might fly along OK at speeds up to 10 or 12 knots; but at higher speeds (relative to the wind) it would tend to be very unstable and probably not last very long. How long should it last if flown a couple of times a week?** A: The Birds of Prey line of kites by X-Kites are made of nylon with fiberglass frames so they are very lightweight. Believe it or not, we bought ours and put it on an old fishing pole with about 3 feet of fishing line and "planted" it in my mother-in-law's garden - every night in a different place. We take it in every morning and don't put it out when the weather was too windy or rainy. It's lasted several months now but hasn't been out in direct sunlight for very long at any one time. Apparently, it's realistic enough to keep most of the night-time raiding varmints out of her garden!There's no way of knowing how long it would last "if flown a couple of times a week". If you're careful, don't crash it too often and don't keep it out in the sun for hours on end, I don't see why it wouldn't last quite a while.
