Definitely go for the spring loaded version over non-spring...much easier to use. My application is for guitar necks and it works perfectly.

This is a really great addition to the wood turning corner of my shop. When turning long pieces, I frequently turn both ends to the diameter I want (plus a little extra to account for sanding), and then work towards the center. If the piece is tapered (like a pool cue) I will calculate what the diameter should be at several places along the piece. Then turn each point to the appropriate diameter, and then "connect the dots" by turning the sections between those points. This digital outside caliper is fantastic, because the calculations usually end up being numbers out to several significant digits. I can set the diameter with this tool very precisely. The only reason I have not marked it as a 5-Star item is because when placing it on the turning piece, it is possible to have the setting get a little enlarged by pressing too hard when checking my progress. You have to turn the set screw really tight to avoid this from happening, and I worry about wearing out the threads or the sliding arc that the set screw binds against to fix the setting. So, I use this tool to set the diameter, then transfer it to a set of conventional outside calipers to actual checking the progress at each point. Serious wood turners, THIS is a fantastic tool for the price!

These are far cheaper than most digital calipers but are more than adequate for most of my needs. They are cheaply made but do a great job. Get the warranty and just use them .I love that they have fractional and decimal inches as well a mm.

Just what I needed in working with reclaimed barnwood of varying thickness. Instant, accurate readouts I can use to set the planer and check results. Also the perfect tool to monitor the shrinkage of fresh sawn lumber over time. Accuracy at all jaw openings I tested against a reference gauge was spot on. I like the selectable decimal inches and fractional inches. Update Feb 2018:. I use this thing constantly. It is invaluable when planing and jointing boards to precise thicknesses. I find decimal/fractional inches to be the most useful, followed by millimeters. It defaults to millimeters every time it's turned on but that's ok. Just a super device and hard to imagine working without it. Update Dec 2018: Turns out that this "super" device has a one-year life span. I've worn out one battery and thought I went through a 2nd. However the problem is that the little plastic battery tray no longer holds the battery (3V disc) in the proper position inside the case to make contact. I can make the thing turn on by dropping the battery inside the case without the tray and shimming it with a thin piece of wood (toothpick or similar) to force contact, but this bypasses the on/off button, so I have to pull out the wedge and put it back in with each use. Downgrading this to two stars from five. I need a better option--likely more expensive--as I have to constantly check the thickness of the wood planks that I am planing.

This product arrived earlier than expected. I used it to gauge the actual width of my orthotics. The price seemed reasonable and the product is made well additionally they added a secondary CMOS battery for future use. I noticed the company was located on the West Coast and this was one of the main reasons why I purchased from the company.

Lets me measure thickness far from the edge of parts. Seems to work well.
