Sakura 50011 11-Piece Zentangle Clamshell Pencil Set

I have owned several sets of these pens over the past 40 years but needed to do some replacements. I actually never used these pens very much over the years because I'm more of a painter (paint under the name "Sondra Van Huss") than a pencil/pen artist so when I went to dig through some of my storage drawers to find these pens I was amazed that they still had ink in them and many still worked just fine. Keep the lids snapped on tightly and they will last for decades! Great pens for the new craze Zentangle that I had decided to give a go at trying but also useful for many other art projects. I would NOT consider these pens for just everyday writing because they have delicate tips, particularly the lowest numbered ones, that require you be mindful of not pushing hard when laying down the ink. Meant for more delicate artwork, not scribbling messages on a board, layouts or anything that you push harder on the pen.

I am giving this a five star review because this is only slightly more in cost than buying a set of pens alone and to me, it is worth it to get the tiles with it. However, I interpreted the description to include some directions for zentangling, as I am just trying the art. disappointed that that little bit you see in the picture didn't unfold into a tiny description of Zentangle. But I am still very pleased with the set. I am going by the wonderful reviews Sakura has gotten. Just to compare I did a search for Zentangle pens, and Sakura was the only brand that came up. So they have to be the best I think. Mine have not dried out as those of some other reviewers, and they write well which is ... what they are supposed to do.

Very disappointed with this purchase. Loved the idea of sampling different sizes of these pens along with the official Zentangle papers.The ink in one of the 01's, the 03 and 05 is nearly dry, making very scratchy and unsatisfactory lines. The second 01 & the 08 are ok, (so the whole kit isn't ruined), but I'm not confident that their useful life isn't reduced as well. At first, I thought my paper was at fault but I have found that these pens are horrible regardless of the paper. Unfortunately, I discarded the packaging before sitting down & fully exploring the functionality of each pen--otherwise I'd return them.I seems to me that this pack has been sitting on a shelf for a long time and I was the unlucky recipient of old or defective merchandise. The pencil is nothing to write home about... It's a branded Zentangle.com pencil - it works fine but hey, it's an eraser-less pencil. (I would've purchased the set without the pencil--I wanted it for the pens & paper sample.)I gave 1 star because I am happy to have a few (5) squares of the paper to sample, enough to enjoy but enough to see for myself that I have quality options in my home that are just as nice as the official papers. (Yes, the official paper is indeed lovely and someday I might splurge on some more!)If you found this product because you are new to the world of Zentangle art and are looking for tools, I'd skip this product and order the pens directly. Better yet, if you've got an art shop nearby, stop in and sample a pen--you'll get a feel for how these pens write/draw and you'll know that you are getting a fresh product.

These markers are wonderful. I am new to Zentangle but find it so relaxing when I can find time to do it. The sizes of each pen are perfect for different types of patterning. I really like that it includes 2 of the smallest size as that seems to be the one used most. Some reviews said there was no ink in them but I did not have this problem. The paper was ok but nothing special to me. I used parchment paper and the ink did not smudge. The ink dried quickly and didn't leave anything on my hands. didnt find the pencil very useful and it didn't erase well either. But I ordered this for the pens mostly and so I was very happy with the purchase. Would buy again.

This us a great set to have if you're new to Zentangles. The different nib sizes in the set work great for anything from very fine lines to bold lines and fill areas. If you aren't sure what sizes you like the most, this set will let you try out different sizes and get a feel how they work with your personal style.The 5 Zentangle "tiles" that are included in the set are the "official" tiles from [...] They're rather pricy to purchase from their website in larger quantities, so these give you a taste of what they're like before you sink in over $30 (including shipping) for 55 blank tiles. The paper they're made from is a joy to draw on.

It was a lightning deal and I got this primarilly for my 11yo daughter but now we are both loving zentangle! Went on youtube and saw lots of great vids. The pen set was great and the little coaster size cards were perfect. We will need to order more of those cards. This is great for those who love to draw and doodle. This also has a calming and therapeutic effect.

The pens have a nice feel, and draw well. All 5 work flawlessly. The pencil is a pretty generic, eraser-less pencil. My only real complaints are the nearly-impossible to open clamshell package, that would have made a nice case, had it not needed to be destroyed to open it, and the 5 Zentangle "tiles", which are nice, but very overpriced. Since I don't use the proprietary tiles, they're wasted on me.

When I first got these pens, I would never realize how much I would use them! I use them for every art project besides zentangle.. They are wonderful! However, my number 8# pen broke after a single use...I still use it but it leaks ink. I don't know if it was my fault or it happens often to these type of pens. It doesn't distract me from buying more from this company. Love these pens!

I love theSakura pens for my Zentangles. They are an exceptionally good product - no blobs of ink, no skipping, and they are exactly as described. This is the perfect kit for Zentangling - with the Zentangle cards included. The pens are excellent for beautiful, precison art work. The pencil is an awesome bonus.This is a great kit for the beginner - and also for the experienced enthusiast. What a fantastic gift this would make.

These pens are really poor quality. The ink doesn't run smoothly. They're scratchy and half if them didn't work at all. There is no obvious difference in the thickness of the line. I would definitely not buy again. In fact, mine are only fit for the bin!

I bought these to try out making my own zentangle colouring pages. This set of pens are great but be aware that there are not 11 pens but only 5 pens plus a pencil for shading. There is also 5 small cardboard tiles that are 10cm x 10cm in size. The tiles that come with this set are ideal for trying out your skills and making "Zentangle" patterned designs.The pens are archival ink, micro pigment, waterproof and fade resistant.I like the pens and there are two that are exactly the same, they are the finest ones and are the 0.25mm (micron one), one 0.35mm, one 0.45mm and a .5mm. The tiles are perfect for using with copic sketch markers or other alcohol pens as they do not run onto the back of the tile.As I am a newcomer myself to creating Zentangle images, I found these pens are great for me. There are some really helpful YouTube videos showing how to make your own Zentangle patterns.The pens are made by Zakura (Japanese) and based on other pens that I own they are a very reputable name in crafting circles and great quality.I am pleased I bought them and I will update this review over the coming months.I added photographs.

A nice starter set for anyone starting zentangle work.
