My Favorite Multi-Pen
As someone who is addicted to writing implements (I can stop buying them any time, right?) I have to say this is, overall, the nicest multipen I've had. It seems well made. The matte finish gives a decent, non-slippery grip. Its metal construction gives it a nice mid-weight, heavier than plastic but not so heavy one would notice it much. Although a bit wider than a stick pen, I find this remarkably slim for a three ink plus pencil combo unit. It uses the standard multi-pen refill, the Type D1. The three included when you buy it are of course Jetstreams. For those not familiar with them, the Jetstream is a hybrid ballpoint; it falls somewhere between the familiar old school ballpoint pen and a gel pen. Jetstreams in particular have a fine reputation as smooth writers. These refills are excellent that way, exhibiting both the Jetstream smoothness and its good line quality, heavier and darker than most ballpoints. Of course a darker line means the ink will be used up sooner. D1 refills don't hold much ink, and Jetstream D1 refills are more expensive than most, so this may be a concern. One could use less expensive, standard ball point D1 refills from any number of other companies if expense is a worry. It is a standard refill type, so there are many brands available. As for the multi-pen itself, it is nicely made. It is mostly metal. The lower barrel rotates reasonably smoothly to switch between the various pens and pencil; not as smoothly as my Zebra Sharbo X, but that only has three units; two pens and one pencil. Didn't come with them either, you had to buy them extra. The Uni comes fully loaded and ready to go. You can change ink colors by turning the lower barrel either way. I had another pen where you could only turn it one way; once you went past blue, for example, the only way to get back to it was to continue all the way around until it came up again. You couldn't turn the pen one notch backward. It's surprising how annoying this gets after a while. Turning the barrel the "wrong way," the direction that would unscrew the barrel so that you can remove it and replace worn-out ballpoints, risks unscrewing the barrel when all you wanted to do was change ink color. However, only the lower three quarters or so of the barrel actually come off when you want to replace refills. There's about an inch wide section, the flared part just below the pen's clip, that doesn't come off. Grip this section when turning the barrel the "wrong way"and it won't unscrew on you. The pen can have a slight rattle when writing, but no worse than I have encountered in ordinary, single color, push button retractable pens. All in all a neat gadget. I like it very much.

One of the best quality pen in my collections
Compared to many high quality pens, this is one of the best. Nice grip, smooth writing feel, and reliable performance. Multiple color plus pencil. Best for making notes with drawing!

This is a REALLY nice pen.
So, I decided after years of reviews to go with a Uni Jetstream. I bought 3 versions - the 4+1 Prime High-grade, the (metal edition of the) 3-in-1, and the cheap plastic multipen. You clearly get what you pay for. This 4+1 prime is a REALLY nice pen. Well balanced, smooth, quality metal construction. I will happily use it as my main pen for years. It's also the most expensive. Note that it has a mechanical pencil. The others don't have that option. The 3-in-1 metal (the older version - 2024??) is nice, but it's not the same materials, and you can feel the difference. The color selectors are plastic, and the construction of the body is not as solid. It's still a nice pen, and I'm happy to have it, but I'd spend the extra money for the prime if I could only buy one. (I think the newest version is most if not all plastic. Know what you're buying.) The multipen is a commodity pen. All plastic. Works fine at the price point. It's using the same ink cartridges, so the only difference is how the pen itself looks and feels. If you can find it on deal, it may be cheaper than the price of the refills for the nicer models. If you're looking at the different options, I hope this is helpful!

This is an excellent pen. I use all four modes of this ...
This is an excellent pen. I use all four modes of this pen daily, and it functions exactly as expected. Several areas of this pen have worn away. i.e. the paint has chipped/come off in a few areas. At the seam where the cover for the eraser is, the exposed rim above the selection markers, along the barrel seams, and at the tip of the pen. The metal underneath is a copper color. Personally, I like the appearance, but I have to assume that this was not designed to do this, and some buyers may see this as a flaw. Writing quality is excellent. The duration/writing span of the ink cartridges will depend on how often you use the pen, but they are D1 style refills. I use the pen daily for approximately 1-2 pages worth of writing (black ink) and the cartridge lasts for approximately 1.5 - 2.5 months, and 2.5-4 months for blue and red (based on my writing habits). The ink refills cost you about $3.25+/- $.25 each. You can sometimes find them in bulk on eBay and bring the cost down to $2.40/$2.60 each. The ink is very high quality, but you can get the same ink in disposable pens for about $1.50 each - so don't buy this pen just for the ink. Buy this pen for the ink + its attractive and classic styling "with a twist." Overall, I think this is a great quality pen for a good price. Just keep in mind that it'll cost you $10.00 each time to refill the pen, have extra refills on hand, and the pen will give you a good long service life.

Good Quality Pen with Minor Annoyances
I'm currently in school right now and use multi color pens to color code my notes. My last two multi color pens, both the Zebra Clip-On Multi 2000 4 Color, worked great except for the mechanical pencil function which would retract itself frequently while I used it. Because of the consistency of the problem, I decided to try another pen. The quality of the Uni is up there with the Zebra. I have accidentally washed both these pens in the washer and neither ruined any clothing. I'm not endorsing this action, but it's good to know you probably won't ruin laundry if you screw up. The Uni feels solid in your hand. It can scratch if you rub something pretty abrasive up against it but it's pretty resistant to drops and everyday wear and tear. Like my previous Zebra, it rattles a bit when you shake it but didn't bother me while I write with it. I doubt there's a way to construct a pen like this that doesn't rattle so I'm not going to call it a negative. It has a good quality pen clip on it that is pretty tight to the pen. The threads on all unscrewable parts are finely machined and look high quality. At the top of the pen clip is a cheap looking biue crystal. I feel it detracts from the nice expensive look of the pen and should be rejected from future updates. That's my only complaint about the look. The pen writes smoothly and all colors look as I would expect them to. It writes more consistently than the Zebra (no random breaks in pen writing). One notable difference between the Uni and the Zebra is the Uni only has three pen colors: red, blue, and black. The Zebra had all those plus green. For me, green was relatively useless but something to definitely keep in mind. Switching between colors with the Uni has been almost flawless. Each color and the mechanical pencil function snaps into place with a solid snap as you twist the pen. Other multi color pens often have you push down a corresponding tab downward to switch between different writing tools. I found the Uni twisting superior since there's no way it can accidentally switch functions and it feels less cheap. On the Uni, there is enough resistance between each writing function that I haven't accidentally switched between them. The only issue I have is that after roughly 20 or so switches between writing functions, the pen starts to unscrew to access all the different pen and the pencil cartridges. The threads are fine on this so it would take a lot of turns before it came apart. It's just a slight annoyance to have to tighten your pen every now and again. The only way to mitigate this would be to only switch functions in the "tightening" direction, but most aren't going to bother with this. Very slight annoyance, not a deal breaker. What makes this pen better for me was the mechanical pencil function. As I previously said, both Zebra pens I owned had an issue where the mechanical pencil would randomly retract when used. With the Uni, it's not a problem, you just twist to the mechanical pencil function--and it stays there =) Also, If you expect to use the pencil function often, I would plan to have a supplement eraser on you because this pen's eraser is small. One last thing, having no writing utensil currently selected is the only way to retract the writing ability. You cannot just push down the top of the pen like you can on a normal cheap bic pen. You will also need to be close to exactly between two writing functions in order to be fully retracted (for example, if the pen functions are at the 3,6,9 and 12 hour marks on a clock, then in order to completely retract all functions, the selection needs to be halfway between 3 and 6). This is because as you near a writing selection, the tip of the pen or the pencil starts to peek out the end. Again, a minor thing I noticed over time and not a deal breaker. For the TLDR: this pen this does everything well but not perfectly. The blue crystal on top of the pen clip detracts from the high quality of the rest of the pen. The pen can be accidentally unscrewed over time by switching writing functions in the same direction as the unscrewing direction of the body of the pen. Finally, in order to have all pen and pencil functions fully retracted, you must leave your twisting selection about halfway between two different choices. All in all, I found this pen to be an improvement over my previous Zebra. Would buy again. 4.5/5, I round down.

Good for short hand things
Everything is great with this. I suppose if youre just taking occasional notes and things this could be a one and done. However, if youre doing a lot of writing...this thing gets masochisticly uncomfortable very quickly in my experience. Think writing with a solid steel bar. Which makes sense being it's all metal but for me if I do any kind of long form writing I will grab a different pen. Otherwise, besides the cost of owning and operating it, I can't think of anything else noteworthy.

Looking for the best multi-pen? Here it is.
2 YEAR UPDATE: Still carrying this pen with me every day. The mechanism feels as solid as it did on day one, even though I constantly fidget with it. It has some minor cosmetic wear now -- the silver ring on top of the eraser cap fell off and disappeared. If I were to get a new one, I'd glue it on to avoid losing it. There's some very minor wear on the finish, mostly around the nib opening. I stand by my original 5 star review. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I can't recommend this thing enough. The mechanism feels extremely solid, with a good amount of resistance when twisting. The clip is very solid, which is not something that can be said of most multi-pens. The grip width of the pen is surprisingly narrow, comparable to a Pilot V5 RT, and the eraser is much better than I had expected. The D1 Jetstream refills are excellent (in stark contrast to the Style Fit Jetstream refills), although I do wish there were more color options, as the blue quite dark. Jetstream refills are also on the expensive side. It's worth noting that they produce a much finer line than their nib size indicates; the 0.7mm refill produces a slightly thinner line than a Pilot V5. In the unlikely event that you don't like the Jetstream refills, there are plenty of other D1 refill options. Overall, I think the only things I would change about this pen would be adding a "closed" notch between two of the color positions (although it rarely slips open even without it), and possibly removing the gem on the clip, although that has kind of grown on me. All told, this is the pen that I now carry in my pocket every day, and no, you can't borrow it.

Really nice multi-pen
I'm a big fan of Uni JetStream pens. This pen has a nice solid feel without being too heavy, fits nicely in the hand, and most importantly, writes really well. The selector mechanism isn't quite as quick as having per-color slide buttons, but it works well and sure looks a lot better. It's kind of pricey, but worth it if you like having a quality do-it-all writing tool. I originally wanted 0.5mm pens, but the 0.7mm version turns out to work really well for my needs. It's still a pretty fine line, but solid enough to be more readable than 0.5mm.

Great multi pen
Cons - Rattles when shaken, ink doesn't last long, when used for long time the matte black goes away, the blue gem is tacky. Pros- super compact for a 4+1 multipen, all metal, simple and reliable ink change mechanism, great weight balance, excellent writer.

Excellent finish, pretty slim body for a 3+1 multi pen
The pen is of excellent quality, both in finish and in mechanical operation. The refills are also of excellent quality, unfortunately at this time they are quite expensive and/or hard to find. You can use standard D1 type refills from other brands, but the original ones have the qualities of being archival, with saturated colors, and writing very smoothly.

Just Excellent!
It was taking some days to be delivered but the wait was worth it. Excellent quality on the product, feel great in the hand and when writing. To have different colours + pencil, all in one is just 10/10. Thanks! A.

Perfect multi pen!
The only minus is getting replacement inks, it would be nice if it was explained more easily where to get the correct refills for pen and eraser.
