Review: Lonely Planet guides are winners! - Love this guide! I always prefer Lonely Planet's approach to travel - and know I'll find the out of the way places I like to visit. However, I did also like having a large pull-out map from the Baedeker Guide to Bali, as well (occasionally, I'd find some different or additional info. about places to visit there - but generally I found the Lonely Planet guide easier and friendlier to use). Review: Another great travel book and completely up to date - Another great travel book and completely up to date. Written with passion and excitement, well organized, and fun to read.

Book was very helpful - I checked out some of the starred places to stay and restaurants and they were good recommendations! I would have appreciated more background on the Balinese culture in terms of their Hindu religion and how it plays out in their daily lives. Also more detail on some of the activities such as the hike to Lempuyang.

Lots of information; could be better in terms of easy trip planning
This is a very comprehensive guidebook of Bali, the Gilli Islands, and Lombok. Howerver, if you are planning a trip, I would actually appreciate more concrete, practical advice on what to do and see, and how to go about doing that, in s smaller amount of space to save time in trip planning. The book has lots of good ideas, but in terms of the "how" it takes work to extricate that, if you can even get it. For example, the author lists Blue Bird taxis as the only ones you should take...and then you get to Ubud to find that they aren't really roaming the streets there, and the only way to get a taxi is to hire a stranger propositioning you on the street! I also think that the author is a little too casual about the country and could offer more advice to solo travelers to make it easier on them. The itineraries are interesting, but again, they take work to figure out and the book needs to make it easier. That said, there are many details and recommendations in the book, and the breadth and depth of information is unmatched. I got very sick on the Gilli Islands and used the book to help determine the best thing, which was the doctor listed in a resort hotel.

I can see why lonely planet guides are No1 bestelling guides. Well organized, with everything you need to know about the place if you are really interested. It's not intended to give you instructions on what to do and where to go but rather to give you all the information you need so you can decide by yourself how you should organize your trip. The guide has several highlight sections on specific aspects of the travel, like "travelling with kids" or "outdoor activities", a comprehensive section of Bali's everyday life, religion beliefs, customs, arts, history etc and of course the main section which gives you information about every region seperately. It is the guide for the traveller who wants to really get to know the place they are travelling to, understand more about it and explore it their own way instead of being holded by the hand like a kid and being dragged here and there.

would recommend to anyone travelling to Bali
Very helpful book, would recommend to anyone travelling to Bali! Especially given that internet can be difficult to access, so using your phone is not always a reliable option.
