My laptop does not have an optical drive. Do you have to use the CD or can you get the same information online?

I am buying a Crucial m4 256 GB SSD Sata III at 6Gb/s, will the cable support that speed? I don't want to buy a usb 3.0 that will run as a 2.0

This cable will ONLY transfer data at the USB 2.0 speed, but is compatible with USB 3.0 devices connected to either end. I use mine plugged into a USB 3.0 port with the other end connected to either my original Notebook Sata II hard drive, or the replacement Sata III SSD replacement. I have had no problems at all, and I now use the cable to clone the original laptop hard drive once a month so that I have a very up to date backup for that one day down the road when the SSD drive decides that its life expectancy is finally over.Apricorn also sells a USB 3.0 cable instead of this USB 2.0 model. It just transfers data at a faster rate, and is backward compatible with USB 2.0 devices.My Apricorn USB 2.0 cable cloned 50 GB of data from my laptop drive to the new SSD drive in 40 minutes in Windows 7.0. It now clones the SSD drive back to the now removed laptop drive in 40 minutes. I will guess that the USB 3.0 version of this cable would do the same transfers in about half the time.I am very happy with my Apricorn USB 2.0 cable and its very simple to use software, and it has a very cheap price. If I had to buy again I probably would opt for the USB 3 version because it is faster. Hope all this helps you Luis.

I don't think changing upgrading will be that hard but, hoe do I know if I need the USB 2 or USB 3? I have a HP Pavilon dv7 with Vista.. Works great but HD to small.. Thanks, Jim

The USB 3 connection is backward compatible with the USB 2 ports. Since you are running Vista, your USB ports are probably USB 2 and you might be able to find the USB 2 version of the Apricorn hard drive cloning adapter at a lower price. Either version will work with USB 2 or USB 3 ports on the computer. The advantage of the USB 3 version is that it is much faster if the computer also has USB 3 ports. If either the port or the Apricorn adapter is USB 2, then the transfer will run at USB 2 speed.
