Awesome multitool
I bought this to replace my old multi-tool which was the same model. The new one is a little lighter in color, but the plus side is that the plier jaws open about 1/16" of an inch wider. I prefer this to any of the Leatherman multitools, the handles are slightly oversized and well contoured to your hand, no cutting into your hand when using the pliers. The main selling point for this is that the tools are accessible without having to first open the tool, select and open tool, then fold the pliers back shut to use them comfortably. This saves a lot of time and the ease of use due to everything with the exception of the pliers being accessible from the outside make this my go to tool. The first one lasted me a solid 15 years, hopefully the second will last as long or longer. I was going to send the original in for warranty repairs as it does come with a lifetime warranty, but it makes for a more interesting story to keep.

Best multitool I've ever owned
I've carried one of these on treks through many nations and it has saved us lots of grief more than once. Whether removing, cleaning, and replacing a plugged fuel filter on a Land Rover in the middle of the desert of northern Kenya when the truck owner didn't have a toolbox -- and the locals incredulously watching it then examining it closely -- or cutting a SIM card with the scissor in Uganda when my phone used the small one and there were none of those available locally, or even cutting rope and then aluminum when we were improving some equipment in China, this thing does it all! This one I bought for a gift for my stepson prior to our first big camping trip together. And like me, he now has it on him all the time even though he lives in the big city and is a digital designer. This is just such a handy and attractive tool and always attracts interest.

Not a real Gerber but it seems to be built as strong.
Edit (August 18, 2016) I moved it to a 4 star review because it has been 3 months since I purchased the knockoff Gerber tool. Truth be told... I use it every day for work and it has worked perfectly and holds up to a lot of abuse. It is built just as well as a real Gerber! The cutters do not work well for cutting wire but they work extremely well for stripping ends. Original Review (May 4, 2016) I rated it a 2 because it is not a real Gerber. You can tell because they "G" on the name "Gerber" does not have an arrow in middle of the line on the G. The RemGrit blade does not have their logo on it either. However.... It is built very well and feels like an actual Gerber. Time will only tell if the metals are of the same quality as a real Gerber. I will change the star rating if it holds up after a year of use.

doesnt break down
I bought this model as a one for one renewal of one I have previously owned and used daily for 15 years. All that was wrong with the old one was that after so much use the rubber hand grips had worn away. The only difference is that this one came without the spare jaws for the wire cutter and were kept in a small, attached pouch and it doesn't have the little extra pouch on the side which I thought was great as I kept a set of tweezers in it. Other than that, this is a great tool and superb value for money.

Awesome gift
I get my hubby a new one every couple of years as a gift. I know they are lifetime guaranteed but we use this so often and “hard” that it doesn’t seem fair to the company to send them back for repairs lol. He uses this tool for absolutely everything! So it’s a fairly regular birthday and Christmas gift option for hubby, which he loves to get a new one. He stores the old ones in places like glove boxes and the garage etc for emergency and quick to reach handy tools and wears the new one on his belt till it’s time to get a new one again lol. So the old ones still get used regularly as well. The pliers make great tick removal and tick squish tools! So I use them for that when I find a tick on the dogs.

One of the best tools but with a some glaring design flaws.
Boy, I've had a love-hate relationship with my Gerber Legend 800! When I got the Gerber it was by far the best multitool I had ever used. It blew away my 80s vintage SOGs, Leathermen, swiss army knives and such. I'had the Gerber from 2002 to 2005 and used it intensively most of that time. If I hadn't lost it I would be using it still. The two tools I've used since (Leatherman Charge Ti and Victorinox SwissTool Spirit) are far better designed and show the Gerbers problems. Even so - there are still things about it that nothing else matches and I sometimes find myself wishing I had the big Gerber in those situations that favor it: Hots: Best pliers for detail work in the multi-tool world. As far as I know this is the only springloaded pliers on a multitool anywhere. They are beefy - no sideways wiggle here - and because they open themselves you use them with your whole hand (no back gripping on the inside with the pinky finger to open them like you have to do with every other pliers). This unique aspect makes them much more comfortable and useable for a multitude of tasks. I respect the spotlight review that complained about these not opening up enough for common plumbing - maybe so - but for detail work they have no equal. The wirecutter blade inserts are great too and make you wonder why everyone doesn't do this. Not only are the replaceable wirecutter blades good for inspiring confidence that if you ruin the edge with some hard wire you have recourse - the carbide blades actually do a really job of cutting hard wire - better than any other multitool. Also - all the tools lock securely - no pinching - and the tools don't open up accidentally by themselves either. The lock mechanism is smooth and easy to employ. Finally - I really like the one hand opening knife and scissors. As far as I know this is the only one hand opening scissors in the business - and since the scissors is such a commonly used tool this is a great and commonly used feature. One hand opening blade is so essential that once you've had it it's hard to go back. What's less than hot: The scissors spring is stiff to operate and there's no thumbpad. Your thumb just bears down on the edge of the scissors - and it hurts in extended use. The spring mechanism is a bent wire - a bit crude. The scissors are nice and sharp - but considering that Gerbers is Fiskars I was expecting better. The knife is a nice clip point but it's half straight and half serrated. The principle competition (Leatherman's Charge) has both a smooth clip point and a separate serrated - so this feels like a halfway effort. In use, however, it's fine. The "Remgrit" saw is useless except for tile. Forget using it on wood - it has grit - not teeth. The saving grace is that the saw is designed to take jigsaw blades - which at first glance seems brilliant. In practice it turns out that there isn't really a true standard for jigsaw blade socket designs and many don't fit here. The other issue is that jigsaws are power tools and this is a hand saw. I never did find a jigsaw blade that was even close in functionality to the saws on Victorinox or Leatherman's offerings. I actually ended up drilling holes in bosch jigsaw blades to make them fit the Gerber, because I felt they came closest - but were much more fragile. The phillips head screwdriver is the adapter for the bit kit. It's a pretty stubby driver and doesn't fit into too many recessed places. The bit kit takes standard bits - a big plus. However the bit holder doesn't mate securely with the phillips head and tends to slip - or drop bits - in use. Also the bit kig comes with a case that's too small to hold the Legend (it's meant for a smaller model). Since no one makes a case that holds both the legend and the bit kit - the kit often gets left behind. BTW - the bit kit rusts up pretty badly too. The file is OK - but isn't as sharp as the one on the Leatherman or Victorinox. The Leatherman Charge's file has a soft diamond side for nails as well - a nice touch. The tools are poorly laid out. The thumb catches on the little flathead, phillips head, and file are all completely impossible to use because they are hidden behind other tools. This is just sloppy engineering. The tools open beautifully by themselves - something that older multitools had real problems with - but you end up having to open adjacent tools anyway - just be able to reach the ones you need. The grippy side panels are rubber adhesive stickers that come off. This didn't bother me much - but it was a silly decision. The locking mechanism digs into your palms in certain grips. The handles are made of aluminum which is supposed to make them light. However, to make them strong Gerber had to make the handles big and thick. This makes the tool very large in the hand. For big handed guys like me this is great - but there are no weight savings here. I have to question the engineering choice of using Aluminum handles since I have come to appreciate the slim elegance of Victorinox's Swisstool Spirit (that uses sleek mirror finished stainless handles) and the Leatherman Charge Ti (which uses sleek and rugged titanium handles). Finally - and fatally for me - the case is nylon with velcro which doesn't last and has some stitching durability issues. That's how I ended up losing mine. one day it just came off my belt - the beltloop stiching gave way. I didn't notice it until I got home, sadly. I know I just gave a long list of gripes but when I add it up in my head in the end I have to say that Gerber is one of the best multitools out there. It's rough and tough and covers almost all the bases and while it has a few rough edges it also has a few standout points. However, given the cost and knowing what I know now I'd probably buy either the Victorinox Spirit or Leatherman Charge Ti (or Wave) first - but not by a wide margin. If you use a pliers for detail work with regularity - this might be the one for you warts and all.

This is the only tool you need as a bushman, it is so good that I lost mine (after owning for 10 years) I immediately ordered another. Be it your out fishing or walking through the forest, this tool will have your back & make it look like you know what you are doing (even if you don't).

I use multitools all the time.I have had several Leatherman ( Leathermen ?) over many years. The Leatherman guarantee is very good as they always repair/replace the tool. While I was waiting for a return I saw a Gerber legend and thought I would give it a try. It gave off a good impression first off because the cast handles felt chunkier than the folded steel ones of the Leatherman and the spring loaded pliers were good.I had that legend for about 7 years, the only problems were that I broke the tip of the knife (I was taking off a hubcap ) and the black rubber inserts in the handle fell off,(only cosmetic).I wore the saw out but it is only a seconds work to replace it with a saw that is designed for what I was cutting.I have never had to spin the wire cutters to another cutting face After 7 years I had no play in the pliers and the only servicing I did was to soak them in diesel overnight to get the built up dirt off then a quick dry and a spray of oil.All in all it is a very good tool. Downsides, the ballistic sheath wore out in about 4/5 years And try as I might I cannot sharpen the knife anywhere near as they come out of the factory. Then I lost it. Bought this new one off Amazon,a very good seller it turned up in about 2 days.Just hoping that I don't manage to lose this one. Eamonn
