QLED, 90 local dimming zones, 600 nit brightness. Fantastic 4k Dolby, HDR10+ more
After much research, and deliberation, I decided upon this specific model, 558-G1. This model has 90 local dimming zones and 600 nit brightness. It's the cream of the m-series crop. So, if various reviews influence your purchasing decision, don't be confused by another QLED Vizio TV that is significantly cheaper. That model has lower brightness and much less local dimming zones. Check the model number to be certain. So, this was highly rated by various tech sites, and the criticisms were few and probably barely noticeable during real world use. Anyway, took the plunge and purchased. A fantastic decision. Relatively light, so easy for 2 people to lift and set upon a wall mount. The packaging and manner of extraction are ingenious and nicely protects the valuable QLED tv. Before you rip open the box, read all the outside information, especially the side panel. It give you directions on how to remove the box from the tv. Follow those directions and you'll be glad you did. The tv is very easy to install, and onscreen setup instructions are pretty foolproof. I chose to use hard wire ethernet to speed up the connection process, and later setup my wireless connection. But, to be honest, I know that using wired connections will be much quicker and reliable than wireless. However, Apple Airplay requires source and tv to be on same wifi to work. So, I'll keep the ethernet connection, and I saved the wifi name/password for selective needs. For some reason, the tv had the picture setting at Vivid, which was a great picture, but very bright. The onscreen instructions said 'Calibrated' was the suggested setting for normal viewing. I chose "Calibrate Dark" which gives me a great picture with a touch less brightness. Interestingly, while watching a Mission Impossible movie, I switched from Calibrated to Calibrated Dark, and then to Vivid. During the scene where Cruise is climbing the glass tower, the Vivid setting gave an unbelievable picture, incredible images of metal and glass, reflections, and scenic nuances. So, for normal tv fare, I think Calibrated Dark is great, for movies the Vivid setting might be best. I am still experimenting with what is best for different source material. There is an issue regarding viewing from an angle. To be fair, this is an issue with most flat screen tv's, except plasma and maybe OLED. If I stand at an acute angle to the tv, yes, the picture is not crystal clear nor color true. Does anyone ever stand at this position to watch tv? No. For a 55" tv, most living rooms will have the sofa at least 7 feet away. Mine is about 7.5 feet away from the screen. My sofa is almost 100 inches wide. At all points on the sofa, the picture is uniformly fantastic. And sitting on the armrests, the same picture as sitting in the middle. So, yes, technically there is a cone of viewing, but it is far from a narrow zone. So, this is a spec'ed out 4k TV, in my opinion. I am actually trying to justify purchasing another for the bedroom.

Great tv
I have had this tv for a little over 2 months now. I was originally concerned because the tv took a long time to turn on and then the smart cast app would fail to load. I was convinced something was wrong with the tv. I started reading other peopleโs reviews on Amazon for this tv and one of the reviews mentioned that the tv was automatically set to eco mode and once he changed the power mode setting to QuickStart he was no longer having any issues with his tv turning on itself. I wasnโt having any issues with the tv turning on its own, but I thought changing the power mode to QuickStart might fix my problem with the tv turning on too slow for the smart cast app to open. Since I have turned the setting to QuickStart I have had no issues with the smart cast app loading. All you need to do is go to menu button on your remote and choose SYSTEM and then scroll down to POWER MODE and change to QUICKSTART. From reading the reviews on Amazon for this tv it seems like most of the complaints may be due to the setting of the tv being automatically set to eco mode. I think the picture on This tv is absolutely beautiful and well worth the money. I am very happy with this purchase. There have been complaints that Disney + is not a preloaded app for this tv, but the Disney + app has recently been added. I would definitely recommend this tv.

Superlative picture quality
The picture quality is great though I've seen better HDR on some units. The upgrade of lower res streaming (720/1080p) is exceptional, far exceeding the original picture shown on a good 1080p TV set. The sound is acceptable in that it is comparable to other sets this size but is still nothing to write home about. A sound bar is definitely a requirement for good sound unfortunately the old Vizio sound bar that I have is not very compatible. In two hours of testing, adjusting and sampling, I was not able to get the volume control to consistently work on all modes of input. (Worked on std cable setting but not on Smartcast or apps). Initial setup was a mixed bag. The set automatically checks for updated firmware... and loads and rechecks and loads more and rechecks and loads more. All the firmware upgrades took over 30 min for my setup. Frustrating wait. The Smartcast feature is great, bringing dozens of free TV channels into play to the point that I may pull the plug on a couple of streaming services. One of the biggest frustrations of a 4K UHD HDR TV is that vert few streams are actually done in 4K resolution. Most have to be upscaled from the 720 or 1080 original stream so the set's ability to upscale is actually more important than the ability to render a 4K image. (Don't forget that your internet speed can be greatly compromised by 4K streams.) My biggest con after the original long startup procedure, has to be the overly complicated remote operation. Vizio's remote has long taken criticism for it's operation and things have not improved much. In reality, it is the TV programing more so than the workings of the remote itself. The menus are initially just too complicated. Once you've had a few days to learn the way to use it, it works OK but requires too much "learning" to get a high mark from me. In summary, it is a great set, exceeding my expectations but it is frustrating that Vizio's biggest complaints go back years and do not seem to be fixed yet. Incidentally, Alexa works well with the setup for On/Off, volume and channel change and all my old Vizio remotes still work with this newest model.

Sadly, The Worst Excuse And "Attempt" At A "Smart" TV By Vizio
THIS Vizio "Smart TV" Is The PERFECT EXAMPLE Of Just WHY You CAN'T Leave "Zero Stars" On An Amazon Review... Original Issue: On or About December 3rd, 2019 Revised: December 11th, 2019 I have to ask myself just โWhatโ is the point of responding to Vizio's โSurvey/Inquiryโ, if Vizio, have no intension of resolving ANY issues or even bothering to contact me. It is now my firm belief that Vizio fully intends to โStallโ past the point of โWarrantyโ on this poorly designed product and just โPretendโ my and other customers experiencing the same issues will just give up and fade into obscurityโฆ Without Question, the "VIZIO M-Series Quantum 55โ Class (54.5โ Diag.) 4K HDR Smart TV - M558-G1" that I purchased on October 5, 2019 is The Worst TV I Have EVER Owned. The ONLY "Redeeming" quality this TV has is it's Picture and Sound... and the "Sound Quality" is 100% due to the 3.0 Vizio Sound Bar That I Use. (At Least Vizio Got THAT Right, And Fortunately For ME I Acquired One BEFORE they Discontinued Them!) My "Major" Issue, as so many others have noted in "Reviews" is the Ridiculously Slow Processor That "Runs" At A Snails Pace, The Completely "Unstable" Wi-Fi Connection AND Vizio's All But Totally Unreliable "Smart-Cast" System. The "Processor Speed" is self explanatory... one of my lap-tops is a 13 year old Laptop that is faster and more reliable. "Nuff Said". As for the Unstable Wi-Fi, I've lost count within the first WEEK, just how many times while "Streaming" the VIZIO M-Series Quantum 55โ Class (54.5โ Diag.) 4K HDR Smart TV - M558-G1 would just "Freeze Up" and give me an "Error Message" that I was "No Longer Connected To The Internet", OR, "Connection Not Available"... Even though EVERY OTHER Device I Own Is Functioning Perfectly. I found that the ONLY way to resolve the issue was to "Disconnect" the "Power Cord" going directly to the TV in order to "Reset" the TVโฆ And Whaa-La the Vizio is working again as it should. It happened SO MANY TIMES, I finally ordered and am utilizing a "Power Foot Switch" in order to "Re-set" the TV when ever this happens, AND CUT THE POWER To The TV when it is not in use. THIS way, when I turn it on (In Most Cases_ I don't get the "Error Screen". And finally, Vizio's "Smart-Cast". The VIZIO M-Series Quantum 55โ Class (54.5โ Diag.) 4K HDR Smart TV - M558-G1 is my Third (3rd) Vizio "Smart TV". My "Other" Vizio's, although Never lasting more than Five (5) years... at least were able to "Stream" Without CONSTANTLY โBUFFERINGโโฆ NEVER Having ANY Issues What-So-Ever. THIS VIZIO M-Series Quantum 55โ Class (54.5โ Diag.) 4K HDR Smart TV - M558-G1 is COMPLETELY UNRELIABLE, EXCEPT fortunately, for "Prime Video" and "YouTube". "Vudu" which I used to watch on a regular basis CONSTANTLY "Drops Out", or begins to โBufferโ CONSISTANTLY Half Way Through A Movieโฆ Every Single Time! YET, Works Fine On Every Other Device I Have. Remember the 13 Year Old Laptop I Mentioned Earlier? Interesting how I can connect it via HDMI cable and get RELIABLE ANYTHING compared to this new Vizio AND, itโs โSmart-Castโ interface. The same can be said for "Tubi" and "Crackle" also. I haven't even bothered trying any "Other Apps", as most of them I could care less about and in Vizio's ultimate "Wisdom" decided that they won't let you "Delete" them so that you just don't have to even "Look At Them". UPDATE: Last night Tuesday, December 11, 2019, I โattemptedโ to watch a movie on โPlutoโ low and behold ยพ through the movie, this poor excuse by Visio of a โSmartโ TV started โBufferingโ, โLocking/Freezingโ, completely โDropping Outโ of the movie so that I had to โExitโ Pluto completely and Start All Over Againโฆ TWICE. I finally gave up and finished the movie on my 13 year old laptop. I've REPEATEDLY Checked For "Updates" hoping these "Issues" would be Resolved... To Date, There Are None. TWICE I've responded to "Inquires" FROM Vizio as to my "Satisfaction" on this TV, and "Do I Need Help", and TWICE I've heard Nothing from Vizio. They have not contacted me back. Bottom Line: The "Issues" I Have Are with the VIZIO M-Series Quantum 55โ Class (54.5โ Diag.) 4K HDR Smart TV - M558-G1 that I purchased, ARE NOT with my "Wi-Fi", OR, Any Other Factor(s) In Regards To My particular โSetupโ. This is confirmed by each and every other device that I have NOT experiencing the Multiple issues that I am experiencing with THIS Vizio "Smart TV" Considering I have owned now a total of 5 Vizio's and with the Exception of possibly my very FIRST Vizio, not ONE of them have gone past Five (5) years without COMPLETE failure's and had to be replaced... Regardless Of The Great Picture And "Specs", It Is Highly Unlikely That I Will EVER Purchase Another Vizio TV. BUT The "Good" News! Vizio M Series Quantum...beyond mind-blown!
This TV is beyond anything that I've ever seen! 1st off, it came in great condition and was handled with the utmost care. The delivery driver was very cool and he was very polite. Out of the box, the colors were so close to perfect, it was stunning to see how accurate the calibration was right out of the box. For those that say that this TV has blooming, is NOT TRUE at all. The blacks are so deep, that it is impossible for blooming on any settings you put it on. Not only that, I have the PS4 PRO and when I hooked it up to this TV, I could not believe how stunning and overwhelmed I was by the sheer amount of graphic fidelity and quantum colors it was able to output! This TV is a match made in heaven with the PS4 PRO! The sound is pretty good as well but get you a decent soundbar for maximum enjoyment from the set. For those who say that this TV is bad for GAMING is absolutely wrong! There is absolutely NO motion blur, NO artifacts, NO burn-in, NO lag and it runs fast games amazingly beautiful! I'm not sure if those ppl who said that this TV was bad for game consoles was not setting it up correctly or they modded their console and/or controllers but I cannot agree with their bad reviews. Just make sure that you do your homework on how to set this TV up to get the best experience out of this flagship tv! And as far as watching tv, my goodness, you will be blown away by how movies in any resolution, especially 4K and/or in HDR is something to behold. Once you experience this Vizio m series quantum TV, it will blow all of your other TV's away, including most OLED's. YES!....EVEN OLED's! Hopefully, you become one of the lucky owners of this Vizio TV from Amazon...you will be 1,000% satisfied! Hope this sheds some light on what your searching for in a great TV! Great picture but beware...
I purchased this TV new not refurbished on May 18, 2020. These are some issues I experienced in a span of two months: WiFi "No network detected" errors (waiting a few minutes for the TV to cycle through whatever it does to make the connection sometimes worked, more often it was only corrected after unplugging the power cord and re-plugging.) Dark blank Home screen or missing app icons (I assume because of the Wifi issue) Loss of WiFi connection during TV viewing (Netflix, Youtube, Hulu, etc.) Intermittent issues turning On (Sometimes the TV just doesn't want to turn On) My own troubleshooting During the "No network detected" TV errors all my other WiFi devices in the house had no issues (Ruled out a Verizon issue) Vizio support website recommended doing a factory reset (Did it. Helped for about a day before the error returned) Vizio Phone Support Opened trouble repair ticket Vizio sent a 3rd Party Repair Person Unmounted TV and replaced Main Board (TV turned on and it looked like the problems were fixed but later that night the network error reappeared and the next day the TV struggled to turned to On) Current Status as of today's date Waiting on replacement TV from Vizio (Requested a NEW TV not a refurb and asked for an upgrade for all the hassle. Customer support manager is suppose to contact me.) Aside from my technical issues these are my ratings for the TV other features/functions (3 stars is the highest) Picture = 3 stars TV Settings screen = 3 stars Home screen = 1 star (no real way to customize) Remote = 1 star (could sure use a microphone, selecting one key at a time when typing something is slow) Available apps = 1 star (limited app selection)

Beautiful Picture, So-So Apps, Poor Service
In the end, I got a TV that I'm fairly happy with, but it was a struggle to get there. We ordered the Vizio in May of 2020 and for a few weeks everything was fine, although the colors didn't seem to live up to expectations. Then the remote all but stopped working unless held within a foot or so of the TV. This occurred with both the Vizio remote and the cable remote, so the problem was clearly with the TV. I contacted Vizio customer service and explained the problem to them and they insisted on sending out a replacement remote to see if it would fix the problem, which it wouldn't and didn't. Next, they offered to send out a repair person. He came out and replaced parts inside the TV. The picture was noticeably different, with the colors now being somewhat over saturated. The remote problem was improved a little, but not fixed, so back to Customer Service. Customer Service promised that someone would reach out to me to arrange a replacement, but no one ever did. I called back regularly for weeks and each time there seemed to be no record of any prior calls. Finally, by July they agreed to deliver a replacement. I assume part of the reason for the delay was the pandemic, but it was frustrating never the less. The replacement not only fixed the remote problem, but also had a much different and improved picture over the original and the "repaired" versions. The picture quality on the replacement is gorgeous; beautiful bright colors, with a sharp picture. The SmartCast Apps are so-so. At times, Hulu gets disconnected in the middle of a show. Internet is via Wifi, but there is a mesh pod about 6 feet away, so signal strength is very good. I'm considering an ethernet connection to see if it improves this or adding a Fire stick

Great Value
It surpassed my expectations. I am replacing a cheap LG 1080P LED TV that I got about five years ago I and am super impressed with the blacks and the colors. I wanted a step up and I would say this is probably a few steps up from what I was working with. The last TV never really got down to black, at its darkest the blacks were grey even when there was no picture on the screen, so I am happy to report that the local dimming makes a huge difference. With the local dimming getting so good I don't think it really makes sense to get an OLED at their current prices. I'm sure they are better but if money is any consideration, it doesn't seem to make sense to pay at least three times as much for a 5% difference. Also with OLEDs, you have to worry about burn-in. Besides the OLEDs, the next step up from this TV would be one with a 120 refresh rate or if you need it to be super bright. That seems to be the only trade off with this TV compared the the ~$800 starting local dimming backlight TVs from more reputable manufacturers. LG calls their local dimming TV's "Nanocell", Sony calls their "Triluminos", TCL has them as well and just calls them local dimming, and Samsung calls theirs "QLED". The marketing for these is extremely confusing and it is hard to compare one TV to another because it doesn't seem like a lot of these TVs tell you how many dimming zones their TVs have. They really make it a nightmare to try to figure out what you are actually getting. Based on my extensive research before buying this TV, it does not get quite as bright as some of the others, so if you are in a super bright room, you may want to consider a different one but I have no issues with the brightness and don't even max out the back light with my settings in an average room with two windows. Some of the other reviews below mention some motion blur. This has to do with the fact that this is actually a 60 hertz screen. 120 hertz screens are more expensive and if you think this will be an issue for you, you may want to pay more for one with 120 hertz and do your research to make sure you are not being cheated by false refresh rate claims. In my opinion, you have to really look to try to find the motion blur so it does not affect my enjoyment of the TV at all. Also, there is a feature called "clear motion" that is turned off by default that you can turn on to help with it. This feature adds a frame of black in between every frame of picture so its like a ghetto 120 hertz. The Vizio P series has 120 (even though they claim its 240, 240 effective refresh rate TVs don't actually exist). Those are the main features you are missing out on with this TV, and its up to you whether its worth a few hundred extra bucks to get those things. I was fine with skipping out for this price. A few more nitpicks: This TV does not have HDMI 2.1, and the Smartcast software it has on it is pretty lame. HDMI 2.1 will probably not matter to anyone except hard core gamers that want to connect their computers to this TV (certainly doesn't apply to me). I do game a little and the reviews that I have seen said this TV has very low latency which is good for gaming but I have not had a chance to test it out yet. Despite the bad review for gamers below, it does seem like this TV is totally fine for gaming at 60 frames per second or less. As for the Smartcast, there are barely any apps to chose from and some of them don't work in 4K. This is not a big deal, just get a Roku, problem solved. Some people online hate on the remote but I find the remote to be totally fine, plus this is an easy fix too, you can get a universal remote if you don't like it. By the way, the fact that this TV has a Chromecast and Air play on it is really cool. Icing on the cake but really convenient if I just want to get something up on the screen really quickly. I was concerned about the speakers because I am cheap and have been fighting the urge to buy a soundbar for like 10 years now but the speakers are totally fine. If you turn them up too much they get a little buzzy (I was just testing them out but never actually needed them that loud) but if you are putting the TV in a quiet room and are not expecting audiophile level sound I think you will find them acceptable Unless you get a dud or have some quality control issues, I think you will be very happy with this TV. I did a ton of research before buying mine and learned more about TVs than I ever wanted to know and this really is an amazing bang for your buck.
