The further the instrument deviates from that formula, the worse it's performance will be. For a 42mm objective lens (which these binoculars have) the maximum magnification for low light use should be 6X. **Q: How far do these work for? I know nothing about what to buy for my husband to watch anchored ships from our condo balcony.** A: If it were me, and the use you describe (stationary subject, balcony, some distance) I'd consider an inexpensive spotting scope and tripod as a better tool for the job.
