I have many radios, mostly for AM Dxing, and all have there positives and negatives, and this radio is no different in those respects.I purchased this radio based off reviews that stated this was the portable radio to get for FM Dxing. Well, the good news is, this machine is absolutely incredible for FM reception. For all of you out there, looking for a portable FM DXing machine, look no further. This beats both my CC radio 3 and CC radio EP pro. The 48" dipole antenna definitely helps pull in those distant stations.For AM, it's just OK (to be fair, I have not spent much time on the AM with this radio, as the FM is just that good). It still does a good job on medium wave, but there are other units specifically made for AM reception, that will do much better.On shortwave, this radio does a fantastic job. It's definitely above average for a portable shortwave radio.Sound is fine, but lacking in low end bass. You will be treated to mid bass, but for anything lower, forget it. Highs are crystal clear, and has no problems with voice tones. The radio comes with a very unique speaker design. I would have much preferred the old fashion 5" driver, but Eton decided to go this route, possibly for weight savings. My only gripe is I wish it had a more powerful amplifier. I have found myself at full volume, and and wanting more audio output. This is one area I think Eton could be improved upon.The aesthetics of the radio are very nice. The layout is clean, the knobs and switches are positioned well. My only gripe is the power button needs to be pressed twice. This may be a feature, in case you accidentally hit it when fiddling around (which I have done a few times).It has many features I have not tried out yet. I do like the fact it has connections on the back for external antennas.My radio did come with a bit of minor damage during shipping. The speaker grill has a small indent from rough handling. The Zenith radio was a circle of sound type that actually sounded good. I enjoyed that radio for many years. My buying decision was primarily based on sound quality, FM and AM reception (the Zenith FM reception was pretty good, the AM section was not). So, I purchased this Eton radio solely based on user reviews. SW reception is not a big deal for me with this unit since I listen to SW using a regenerative receiver which I prefer.The sound quality out of that 2" front driver is excellent. It seems to be port loaded to extend bass frequencies and is mounted on a front plate where a larger speaker might go. I am amazed on the sound clarity and bass response out of this speaker. it seems well designed and seems to be something some other manufacturer are doing using smaller well designed drive units.The FM section on this radio is very good , sounds good and fits my needs well. The AM section seems to be the same though I don't listen to AM as much but it picks up stations I like to listen to. This radio has a headphone jack. I use good quality headphones though I think the sound quality out of the headphone jack is not as good as coming out of the speaker. I mainly listen to the radio via the speaker. I use the radio on battery power only, AC power on this set does not sound as good as with the batteries only, to me anyway..As far as SW, I tried using but I'm not a big fan of super-heterodyne receive for SW listening and prefer regeneration type receiver which seems more versatile to me and easier to tune. It was fine, but unstable to sit around permanently. I wanted something that was larger, included an AC adapter, and had a bigger antenna. I knew I was giving up some digital convenience. I also did not want to pay a lot of money. I searched for hours, and settled up this Eton Elite Field Radio. It's kinda just a basic radio. It's larger, well-built and robust. It pulls in a decent number of AM & FM stations and the sound is pretty good. I'm not picking up that many shortwave stations, though, either did my other one. I bought an external antenna, which does little. This was $45 cheaper than a similar radio that was only AM/FM, so I'm happy with the choice, because I wanted a setting-around radio.
