They can remain "off-hook" with no sound in your ear, until you answer an incoming call/line on the handset or in the Interact App. It's a great headset for receptionist and heavy call use. (We've used many of these in my office since 2015. I'm replacing one at 5 years old, due to reduced 4-5 hour battery life and the headset falling off of the ear-hook adapter.
