Will cutting the front of the cap where a closure sits ruin the elastic band inside?

It will not ruin it, I do it all the time. You just need to make sure you do not sew though the elastic band; only see through the fabric above it. Sewing through the band will prevent it from stretching.

I want to do a crochet wig, will this type of cap work?

No it won't...this is a dome style cap can be used to sew or glu3 a wig.

Does this stay secure on the head if combs aren't sewed in?

No. Was too small for my head and I have a tiny head. Lol
