I guess the eh412st is supposed to be a business projector...but would it work well for a home theater set up?

I believe that yes, its Short throw lens: experience a large 120" Image projected from 4. 5 feet away, at throw ratio 0. 5: 1; short throw Projectors allow placement closer to the screen making it ideal for more smaller spaces and easier installation.

Is it bright enough to use outdoors during daytime if placed in the shade?

I would say, No. This is a great projector with a very short throw, but it is NOT overly bright. I bought for a golf simulator in the garage. Even the sunlight from the one window can be enough to make it a bit hard to see at times. You might be able to make it work with the right shade, and screen setup, but I would not recommend if the primary intended use is outdoors during the day time.

I see that it has a usb port. will this allow me to plug in a usb flashdrive and read/present files in formats such as pdf, ppt, or doc?
